Gubernatorial Candidates to Debate in Live Broadcast


The first of two hourlong debates between Gov. M. Jodi Rell, the Republican incumbent, and Mayor John DeStefano Jr. of New Haven, the Democratic challenger, is scheduled for Monday at 8 p.m. at the Garde Arts Center in New London. It will be broadcast live on WTNH, Channel 8.

The second debate is scheduled for Oct. 18 at 7 p.m. at the studios of WVIT, Channel 30, in West Hartford, and will also be televised live. 

Neither debate will include the third-party candidates listed on the ballot, Clifford W. Thornton of the Green Party of Connecticut and Joseph A. Zdonczyk of the Concerned Citizens Party of Connecticut. 

Mike DeRosa, co-chairman of the Green Party of Connecticut and a candidate for secretary of state, said he was upset that third-party candidates were not invited. 

"We can only guess that the major parties believe our views are a bit too dangerous," he said. "Maybe there are some inconvenient questions they don't want us to debate." 

The debate Monday night will be sponsored by The Day of New London. The newspaper said the moderator would be Kay Maxwell, former president of the League of Women Voters of the United States. On the panel will be Morgan McGinley, The Day's editorial page editor; Ted Mann, a political reporter with the paper; and Mark Davis, the Capital correspondent for WTNH.

The format will include opening and closing statements by the candidates and timed answers and rebuttals, the paper said.

About 600 free tickets have are available to the public, The Day said, and can be picked up at the paper's New London and Norwich offices, the Waterford and Groton public libraries and the Garde Arts Center. 

WVIT said last Wednesday that it would announce the panel members and the format for its debate soon.
