Green Party gubernatorial candidate Clifford Thornton Jr. shakes hands with Griswold Elementary School fifth-grader Amanda Sciola after she escorted him to the stage for a candidate forum Tuesday.

Griswold - Never mind the Quinnipiac University poll. Forget about the University of Connecticut survey. It's the results of the Griswold Public Schools' Oct. 30 mock election that really matter.
"The real one to watch is in Griswold," Superintendent of Schools Elizabeth Osga told 16 state and federal candidates Tuesday morning.

Griswold students have accurately predicted the outcome in many significant races over the three years the mock election has been held.

On Tuesday, a candidates' forum hosted by the fourth- and fifth-grade enrichment program drew more political hopefuls than ever before.

The fifth-graders asked for the federal candidates' opinions on airline safety and the economy. They wanted to know the state candidates' thoughts on rising gasoline prices and how Connecticut is handling taxpayers' money.

      They asked for honest answers.

Candidates reminded the students that no group has a bigger stake in the outcome of the election than their generation.

"I'm very pleased with the students' performance and the guests' ability to speak at a level so that everyone in the audience could understand," Griswold Elementary School enrichment teacher Russell Salvador said.

The candidates were given 60 seconds to introduce themselves and another 60 seconds to answer questions posed by five enrichment program students.

Students enthusiastically applauded Clifford Thornton Jr., the Green Party candidate for governor, who pledged to do away with college tuition, lower the voting age to 16 years and address social and environmental policies.

Fifth-grader Alex Peterson, one of the hosts, said Green Party lieutenant governor candidate Jean de Smet's message not to take no for an answer is a characteristic she wants in a state official.

Ralph Ferrucci, the Green Party candidate for U.S. Senate, told students that a Quinnipiac University pollster called him to ask who he would vote for - Democrat Ned Lamont, independent candidate Sen. Joseph Lieberman or Republican challenger Alan Schlesinger.

"I said 'myself,' " said Ferrucci, drawing applause from many of the high school-age students attending the forum.

Schlesinger told the students to get involved, no matter their party affiliation or lack thereof.

U.S. Rep. Rob Simmons, the 2nd District Republican, said his desire to help people continues to be his motivation to run for elected office. Simmons' challenger, Democrat Joe Courtney, said he is running for the opportunity to ensure accountability in the federal government, particularly when it comes to unfunded education mandates.

Democratic state Rep. Steven T. Mikutel of the 45th District told the students he wants to continue to represent them and their interests in Hartford. His Republican challenger, Robert LaChapelle, said it's his belief that no one should run unopposed.

"People should work for your support, not just be given it," he said.

Candidates in the 18th state Senate District, Democrat Andrew Maynard and Republican Lenny Winkler, said they would bring independent and unique ideas to the office.

Maynard, the Stonington Borough warden, said he has developed a relationship with the state as a municipal leader and now wants to develop relationships as a state official with municipal leaders.

An emergency room nurse, Winkler said she will concentrate on resolving the issue of a lack of "good quality health care" for all residents.

Elementary school students will bring home voter registration forms for parents who have not yet registered to vote. The students will also bring home mock registration forms that they must submit by Oct. 27 to be eligible to vote in the Oct. 30 mock election. Fourth- and fifth-graders will vote on the candidates. The lower grades will vote on favored books and authors.

The high school will sponsor a separate mock election next week.
