As there is no SCC meeting scheduled during the next week, I recommend that the Executive Committee immediately empower three more delegates with voting privileges, which authorization can either be changed or confirmed at the next SCC meeting, until such time as the CTGP holds new elections for these three new NC delegates. I apologize for not understanding how quickly the delegate reallocation formula below would take effect. Meanwhile, enjoy your 4th of July, declare independence from the Dem/Rep duopoly, and celebrate the (relative) strength of the CTGP, as our NC delegation increases by 250% from two to five! This information has been passed along to the listserv and voting page managers. This is a reminder for me that I have been planning to post a list of what is needed when a state has an update in their delegation. Information should be sent to me (secretary at gp.org - is easy to remember), and I forward it to the nat'l listservs manager and voting page crew. Getting a complete (or as complete as possible) list in one document will be extremely helpful, especially as the size of the NC expands. It will make things more efficient and manageable for the list/voting page admins! If there are just one or two changes, sending that information alone is fine. For more subtstantial updates, however - from your state's co-chairs, officers, or whoever officially sends this information: 1 - A complete list of the current (newly elected) delegates, alternates and observers from your state. "Retirees" not designated observers will be unsubscribed from the listservs. 2 - New delegates and alternates are automatically subscribed to the "natlcomvotes" listserv. They had been automatically subscribed to "natlcomaffairs," as well, but in the future, we'd like to know whether they wish to subscribe to the discussion list or not (before they're subscribed, then un-subscribed, etc). So, let me know if the newcomer wishes to be addded to teh discussion list. 3 - For newcomers, contact information (mailing address, phone #, and the eamil they wish touse for Green Party work). This will be included in a direcotry found through the voting page. The directory is password protected and accessible to other delegates, alternates and some committee officers. Individuals may choose not to have their part of all of their contact information listed, although most do. Thank you! Back to GP.org Dear Timothy: The United States is the only industrialized nation in the world without a national health care system. The current system's high costs and widely recognized failures demand that bold steps be taken. The Green Party supports a universal, comprehensive, national single-payer health insurance program as the only solution to the current disastrous for-profit system. Under a universal national single-payer health care system, the administrative waste of private insurance corporations would be redirected to patient care. If the U.S. were to shift to a system of universal coverage and a single payer plan, as in Canada, the savings in administrative costs would be more than enough to offset the cost. Expenses for businesses currently providing coverage would be reduced. State and local governments would pay less because they would receive reimbursement for services provided to the previously uninsured, and because public programs would cease to be the "dumping ground" for high-risk patients and those rejected by HMOs when they become disabled and unemployed. It is no secret that each year more and more Americans go without health care. 11 million children and 35 million adults have no medical insurance, up six million from six years ago while our health care system ranks only 37th in performance worldwide, outranked by Morocco and Costa Rica. That's why the Green Party and Green candidates have consistently called for universal health insurance. Big drug manufacturers and insurance firms have killed all attempts to have America join the rest of the industrial world and provide health care to all Americans. Too many Washington politicians, both Democrats and Republicans, have been bought off by their big corporate checks while millions more Americas lose all hope of ever being able to afford quality health care. The Green Party does not accept contributions from corporations including any of those mentioned above. In July 2006, San Francisco made history by becoming the first jurisdiction in the nation to provide universal health insurance to each uninsured man, woman and child regardless of income or pre-existing conditions. The Green Party has promoted such a system for the entire nation and asks you to join us in our efforts to make Medicare For All a reality in the United States. You can help by going to the Take Action link at www.gp.org and send an automated letter to the editor of your local newspaper and also, send a letter to your Congressperson supporting the Green Party position. The Green Party does not accept corporate donations and depends on people like you to support our efforts. Please donate to the Green Party and help us wage a campaign for healthcare for all. We are changing the political landscape. We can do more, but we need more help from you. With your help, we can change the world. Will you please help us out today? Tell your friends and please click on the donate button. The future of the Green Party is in your hands. If you want to see a powerful and progressive Green Party for years to come, please act today. So the treasurer has decided to try, on a trial basis, using a system used by Steve Fournier (Greater Hartford Chapter). Steve will charge a 5% fee per month of any electronic donation. . B. Proposals from the Executive Committee: * EC Proposal for chapter building: to enhance chapter building: perhaps one or more of the GP of CT officers could go to chapters, one at a time to help chapter build, if a chapter requests. This will only at the request of the chapters. The GP of CT and chapters could do ads to announce meetings on: radios such as ESCU, Wesleyan, UCONN and on community TV shows. The EC is seeking clarification from this SCC body if this would be something that they would wish to have done at their chapters. If the chapters are agreeable, the officers will continue this pursuit. Consensus acquired. * EC Proposal for part-time fundraiser position: EC is seeking SCC approval. Goal: to enhance the fundraising potential for the GP of CT. Potential candidates would be encouraged to submit their resumes by the time of the 6-26-07 SCC meeting. A Hiring Committee (EC officers) is to review/vet potential candidates and submit their names to the next SCC meeting for potential approval. Goals of this position can be clarified by the SCC along with any applicable commission and/or salary. Consensus acquired about: a) EC is to develop the job description to be presented at the 6-26-07 SCC meeting; b) defer the submission of any resumes until after 6-26-07 SCC meeting and c) the fundraiser will notify the local chapters, in a timely manner, of any potential or actual planned/scheduled fundraising events in the individual chapters; c) EC to vet/review candidates. * EC Proposal for Platform Committee: re-constitute this committee to help work on the positions of the GP of CT. Platform positions are subject to the approval of the SCC. Consensus acquired. Committee to include: David Bedell and Richard Duffee. Other members of GP of CT may also come forth. * EC Proposal for Strategy Committee: re-constitute this committee to help with processes of the GP of CT. Proposed processes are subject to the approval of the SCC. Consensus included putting procedures on the website. Committee to include: Jerry Martin, Mike DeRosa and Richard Duffee. Other members of the GP of CT may also come forth. * EC Proposal for structure of future SCC meetings: a discussion of 10 Key Values and invited speakers: have one of our 10 Key Values discussed for a minute or two at each SCC meeting. This could enhance or enlighten members various thoughts about a value and can be tied into the work (of a re-constituted) Platform Committee. It may open the opportunity to learning, from attendees, if other groups are out there working on Key Value type issues which the GP of CT may wish to join. Consensus acquired. * EC is looking into having speakers at SCC meetings to educate or update SCC attendees about issues or concerns to the GP. Consensus. * Resolution to impeach Bush and Cheney from Richard Duffee/Greater Hartford Chapter. RD: not all CT towns allow binding or non-binding resolutions so promoters of this resolution are putting out flyers about the resolution. Flyers also provide names of contacts to develop networks. Town meetings are being done to impeach. To present to Congress, one does have to present there are grounds for impeachment. Goal: towns pass resolutions which are presented to their state legislatures then presented to Congress. To be released to and press. Consensus. . C. Reports: 1. Political issues the GP of CT is addressing with legislators during the 2007 Legislative Session: Fight the Hike and medical marijuana were discussed by all. 2. GPUS updates/reports/ status of our GPUS from CTGP representatives: Tim McKee and Charlie Pillsbury and International Committee Rep: Richard Duffee. 3. CT Green Times: MD: not published due to the lack of articles. 4. GP of CT Website: MD: Eric DeVos is working on changing the format. CR: I have renewed the website domain for 3 more years after 4-07. 5. ACLU lawsuit: MD: there will be a 6-6-07 hearing in Bridgeport regarding the State of CT request for summary judgment i.e. throw out the lawsuit. Others taking the position of the State of CT: CCAG, Common Cause and Thomas Sevigny, former: Green Party member, State co-chairperson and National Co-chairperson. If the judge does allow the hearing to go forth, then both sides will be questioning each other, under oath. The ACLU has two (2) new attorneys on the lawsuit. The ACLU?s research found that 40% of CT elections do not have any opponents. 6. Date, place and time of next EC meeting in 7-07: To be determined. 7. Date, place and time for next SCC meeting 6/26/07: to be determined but likely to be Middletown or Portland location. 8. Democrats are a lost cause on health care, while the Green Party's candidates and platform demand a single-payer national health plan . Americans will only get a true universal health plan (Single-Payer / Medicare For All) when Greens are elected WASHINGTON, DC -- The Green Party of the United States sent an open letter to Michael Moore, whose movie 'Sicko' opened in theaters last week, urging him to join the efforts of the Green Party and its candidates and officeholders to enact a single-payer national health plan (also called Medicare For All). The Green Party agrees with Michael Moore's premise that the US's private insurance system must be dismantled, and that the country must convert to a single-payer plan similar to the Canadian system. Greens warned Mr. Moore that the Democratic Party (like the Republican Party) is too awash in corporate money to end the stranglehold of the private HMO-insurance industry and enact genuine coverage for all Americans. Congress will only seriously consider a single-payer plan when Greens begin to win seats in the US House and Senate. The Green Party letter encourages Mr. Moore to help Greens get elected to Congress, as well as state legislatures and city councils, and predicts that the Green Party's 2008 nominee and national slate will be the only candidates on most ballots who support single-payer. The text of the letter follows below. . Dear Mike Congratulations on the opening of 'Sicko' and all the glowing reviews! We in the Green Party hope that millions of Americans will see 'Sicko' and understand that America has a choice: we can either have quality health care guaranteed for everyone, or we can maintain a system based on corporate insurance and HMO coverage. We can't have both. And we hope that the American people will realize that it's time to demand a single-payer national health plan and stop privileging corporate profits over the health -- the very lives -- of the American people. Here's the problem: we're not going to get a national health plan as long as the political landscape remains limited to two parties addicted to corporate contributions. Republican and Democratic politicians alike refuse to consider any plan that doesn't leave private HMOs and insurance corporations in charge. There are some exceptions among Dems, like Reps. John Conyers (Mich.) and Dennis Kucinich (Oh.), but Rep. Conyers' single-payer bill has as little chance of passage as Rep. Kucinich has of getting nominated. Once upon a time, the Democratic Party supported national health coverage and even endorsed it in the Democratic national platform in 1948. But they deleted it from the platform in the 1990s to make room for President Clinton's 'managed-care' phony reform scheme, which would have enlarged the power of major insurance firms. In the 2000 and 2004 elections, Democratic presidential candidates Al Gore and John Kerry both rejected national health insurance. (Mr. Gore saw the light and endorsed it a couple of years later.) There's only one prominent national party that supports single-payer/Medicare For All -- the Green Party. The Green Party and its candidates have demanded single-payer ever since we were founded, and we don't accept corporate contributions from HMOs, insurance firms, pharmaceutical manufacturers, or any other corporate lobby. Let's be honest, Mike. The USA will never have a national health insurance program until we break the two-party stranglehold and see the emergence of a new party that's free of corporate influence. If we can get a few Greens into Congress, as well as into state legislatures and city halls all across America, and if our presidential candidates can draw significant percentages on Election Day, it'll change the political landscape. When Democratic politicians have to compete with Greens as well as Republicans, more of them will embrace single-payer. (And some maverick Republicans will support it, too!) When the 2004 election season began, you and Bill Maher got down on your knees in front of 2000 Green presidential candidate Ralph Nader and begged him not to run again in 2004. You and Bill insisted that 2004 wasn't the time for a third-party challenge, and that the priority of every rational American should be the removal of George W. Bush from the White House. Millions of Americans who support a national health plan -- as well as an end to the Iraq War -- agreed with you and Bill and voted for John Kerry, a candidate awash in corporate money. Mr. Kerry dismissed national health care and declared himself solidly in support of the Iraq War. What was the outcome? John Kerry and his fellow Dems (again, with a couple of exceptions like Rep. Conyers) sat on their thumbs when reports of Election Day irregularities surfaced in Ohio and other states. Thousands, perhaps tens of thousands of African American and student votes were obstructed or not counted. Mr. Bush's election in 2004 was as illegitimate as his 2000 victory! Mike, I'm sure you remember that it was two third-party presidential candidates -- the Green Party's David Cobb and Libertarian Michael Badnarik -- who demanded an investigation and led the Ohio recount. It was Greens who raised the money for legal expenses in the Ohio and New Mexico recounts. While John Kerry and his buddies kept mum (maybe they feared that the Democrats' own election shenanigans would be exposed), Greens fought for fair and accurate elections and the right to vote. A few months later, the Conyers hearings proved that the Green Party was right. Republicans in Ohio not only rigged the election, they also tried to influence the recount. In January, 2007, two Republican election operatives were convicted in Cuyahoga County for their role in fixing the recount. Here's the kicker, Mike. When Republicans in Florida failed to hand in petitions for George W. Bush before the deadline for the 2004 election, Democrats gave them a pass and placed Mr. Bush on the ballot anyway! Imagine the movie you could make about how Republicans and Democrats have shredded our election system! We can only conclude that the Democratic Party would rather lose elections to the GOP than tolerate third parties and independents -- with a special hostility towards anyone whose campaign brings a noncorporate antiwar message to the American people. That's why we can't get a national health program. The Democratic and Republican leadership doesn't even want Americans to discuss the single-payer option, although they'll have a hard time censoring the debate now that 'Sicko' is in theaters. We know that the private insurance industry, mainstream Democratic and Republican politicians, and the corporate media are already trying to undermine the message of 'Sicko.' They're calling national health care 'liberal elitism' and 'creeping socialism' and other names. As FAIR reported on June 25, CBS's Jeff Greenfield ignored polls in a June 22 story on 'Sicko' with an erroneous claim that national health coverage has minimal popular support. We know that Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, and most of the other Democratic presidential hopefuls are offering corporate-friendly health care reform plans. We can predict that they'll claim their plans will solve the crisis depicted in 'Sicko,' just as the Clinton Administration dishonestly called its managed-care proposal 'universal health care' back in 1993. On June 26, 2007 six Democratic US Senators spoke at an SEIU-sponsored 'universal health care' rally on Capitol Hill in which single-payer and Medicare For All were never mentioned. When Dems say 'universal health care,' they really mean "For God's sake, anything but single-payer!" The Green Party will be the ONLY PARTY in 2008 that demands single-payer. The Green nominee will be the ONLY PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE who talks about single-payer. We'll be the only party supporting what Michael Moore supports! The argument that our first priority must be the defeat of the GOP no longer holds water. Regardless of whether Democrats or Republicans get into public office, the real winners are powerful corporate lobbies: insurance, HMO, pharmaceutical, oil, defense, credit card, real estate, you name it. And if the Republicans manipulate the vote again and engineer their own victory, blocking African Americans, young voters, poor voters, and voters serving overseas in the US Armed Forces, we can be sure that the Democratic leadership will again roll over, scratch their butts, and say "Let's not be divisive! It's time to move on!" 'Sicko' will not change the Democratic Party agenda. MoveOn, Progressive Democrats for America, and terrific pro-single-payer candidates like Dennis Kucinich will not influence the Democratic platform in 2008. It's a safe bet that MoveOn & Co. will place party loyalty ahead of their own stated ideals and endorse whichever corporate candidate gets the 2008 Democratic nomination. These Pied Piper Progressives will lure voters who want single-payer, voters who want US troops out of Iraq, voters who want a White House and Congress free of insurance, oil, and defense industry influence into voting for a Democrat who flushes their agenda down the drain. As David Cobb observed during his 2004 Green presidential campaign, the Democratic Party is the "graveyard of progressive politics." It's the graveyard of national health care. The Green Party is growing. We've continued to face down antidemocratic challenges from the old parties. In 2006, Green candidate Rich Whitney drew 11% in the race for Governor of Illinois and achieved ballot status in his state for the Green Party, after Gov. Rod Blagojevich spent $800,000 in taxpayers' money trying to keep Greens off the ballot. Nationally, we won more votes than ever before in the 2006 election. But we have a long way to go. Hey, Mike, do you really want to see a national health plan enacted? Do you really want the message of 'Sicko' to be part of the public debate over health care in the 2008 election and beyond? Then let's stop wasting time. Help us run a Green candidate for president in 2008. Help us get Greens elected to Congress. Help us place Greens in statehouses and county commissions and city halls and school boards. (Yes, we know you have supported Green candidates in the past!) Help us get ballot access in every state. Help us bring the Green message to the American people. Help us make the Greens a major political US party. Help us spark the kind of revolution in US politics that will make a single-payer national health plan a reality! The severely wounded Abdel-Hussein was taken away and his 18-year-old daughter was left alone, injured and bleeding on the floor. Abdel-Hussein's beaten body turned up at the Yarmouk Hospital morgue on July 6. The murder of Abdel-Hussein was the most devastating of four attacks by the U.S. military on the Iraq Freedo m Congress in the past 10 months. The IFC is an organization comprised primarily of trade unionists, community leaders, and women's and children's rights workers who are determined to look after their own. IFC's goals are to salvage the lives of as many Iraqis as possible, and to end the occupation and sectarian fighting. Its slogan: "No Shiite! No Sunni! Ours is Human Identity.' The IFC has 22 offices or 'wards' in Iraq cities and neighborhoods. It establishes where and when it is invited by local community leaders. Since 2005 the IFC has been working toward a progressive democratic non- sectarian government in Iraq. It is as critical of the violent political Islamic forces as of the violent U.S. occupiers. Abdel-Hussein, 50, was born in Basra, and was a resident of Baghdad's Alattiba neighborhood at the time of his death. He was the head of the IFC's Safety Force, an organization of men who volunteer to protect and defend both Sunni and Shiite citizens from sectarian gangs. He spent two years of his life in jail in the 1990s for opposing the Saddam Hussein regime. 'Throughout the period of his leadership of the Safety Force, there had been no killing based on identity in the area where he lived and in other areas with the presence of the Safety Force,' the IFC said in a written statement. An IFC spokesman says the 'cowardly' attack is part of Bush's surge which is aimed at suppressing Iraqi political opponents. It could be, too, that IFC's growing influence as a protector and unifier within Iraq's pulverized society is seen as a threat to U.S. government objectives. A peaceful sovereign Iraq will not turn over its rich oil reserves to foreign invaders. The day before Abdel-Hussein's abduction, the IFC- sponsored SANA TV gave its inaugural broadcast over a satellite network. The program ran a story about the recent mass demonstra tion against the proposed oil law being pushed by the Bush administration. The program included an overview of the IFC's Safety Force and interviewed some of the five IFC members who had been arrested by U.S. and Iragi national guards June 7. Those arrested, Mohamed Karim, Ali Hussein, Mohamed Mahmoud, Hussam Salim and Abdul Amir Saleh, were interrogated at the U.S. base in Baghdad's Rustumiyyah neighborhood and then transferred to the local police station before being released 11 days later. An IFC spokesman said the Iraqi police intentionally misled US forces, stating that the IFC was part of the sectarian Al-Mahdi Army that was planning to expand into the Al-Askary neighborhood, and therefore a terrorist organization. In fact, the IFC Safety Force had already confronted the scouts of Al-Mahdi and prevented them from establishing a foothold. The IFC won the detainees' release by waging a political campaign both l ocally and globally, as well as a judicial battle. It filed a lawsuit against the U.S. agents for raiding the office without judicial authorization or an arrest warrant. SANA is funded by IFC allies around the world, but primarily by Japanese supporters. Besides its 22 chapters in Iraq, there are five chapters in Japan and south Asia, five in Europe and Scandinavia, and two in North America (one in Canada and one in the United States). IFC has ongoing collaboration with the 0 million member US Labor Against the War, and the IFC-US chapter carried the IFC banner during the January 27 protest in Washington D.C. SANA intends on using its solidarity network 'to amplify the voice of freedom, peace and the equal rights of all people in Iraq and the Middle East,' said Nadia Mahmood Al-Sanna, a SANA producer. The IFC Safety Force recently graduated its third group of volunteers who are trained in mediation and self defense. B esides protecting citizens from marauding sectarian gangs, the Safety Force provides escorts to people who are in danger, and has a proactive outreach program calling for an end to sectarianism. The IFC tries to influence citizens against falling for the trap of retaliation. The so-called 'insurgents' have also organized recreational play days for children, economic survival conferences for women, teams of doctors who go to the homes of people too ill or too afraid to travel to the hospital, raised money for food and medicine, and attended funerals to shield mourners from further violence. A primary goal of each project is to bring together Shiites and Sunnis in a spirit of cooperation and non-violence. IFC Executive Committee Member Amjad Al-Jawhary (Abdel- Hussein also served on the committee), said the U.S. administration is targeting efforts such as IFC that 'aim to restore security, safety, freedom, and prosperity. They [US] well know that such forces will jeopardize the presence of the occupation and threatens to undermine its determination and prestige.' The IFC is trying to provide some semblance of public safety without government resources or sanction during a humanitarian crisis. Neither the trillion-dollar U.S. military led by the dazed and confused Bush administration, nor the dysfunctional police and army under Bush's puppet leader Al-Maliki have provided any measurable safety for Iraqis. If anything, civilian killings are growing by the day. Abdel-Hussein was a courageous man, someone an American would look up to, like John Wayne - only real. What will be the result of this all too common incomprehensible killing? It brings to mind an observation Cindy Sheehan shared when speaking in Minneapolis this year. 'It's common sense that when you kill an innocent person, it's going to piss off their relatives. I don't know why Geor ge Bush hasn't learned that from me.' I'm very pissed off, too. And deeply saddened for what we have become. [] Abdelhussein Saddam, 1957-2007 'The assassination of Abdel Saddam Hussein by US forces mafia will not discourage the determination of the Iraq Freedom Congress and will be a new impetus to continue the struggle to rid the Iraqi society from all types of terrorists. They murdered Abdelhussein, but his spirit, ambitious aspirations, and bravery for building Iraq that is secular, humanitarian, and free from occupation and sectarian gangs, will be firmly in the hearts of freedom lovers.' -- From a statement by the Iraq Freedom Congress on the death of Abdel-Hussein Saddam, leader of the IFC Safety Force, July 8, 2007 For more information: Iraq Freedom Congress: www.ifcongress.com IFC-USA: www.freewebs.com/ifc-usa US Labor Against the War: www.uslaboragainstwar.org _______________________________________________ usgp-int mailing list usgp-int at gp-us.org http://forum.greens.org/mailman/listinfo/usgp-int From TDayan at aol.com Tue Jul 10 20:16:00 2007 From: TDayan at aol.com (TDayan at aol.com) Date: Tue, 10 Jul 2007 20:16:00 EDT Subject: {news} GREEN RELEASE Open Letter from Green Party to Michael Moore on Sic... To: usgp-int Doctors Are The Third Leading Cause of Death in the US, Causing 225,000 Deaths Every Year This article in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) is the best article I have ever seen written in the published literature documenting the tragedy of the traditional medical paradigm. If you want to keep updated on issues like this click here to sign up for my free newsletter. This information is a followup of the Institute of Medicine report which hit the papers in December of last year, but the data was hard to reference as it was not in peer-reviewed journal. Now it is published in JAMA which is the most widely circulated medical periodical in the world. The author is Dr. Barbara Starfield of the Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health and she describes how the US health care system may contribute to poor health. ALL THESE ARE DEATHS PER YEAR: 12,000 -- unnecessary surgery 7,000 -- medication errors in hospitals 20,000 -- other errors in hospitals 80,000 -- infections in hospitals 106,000 -- non-error, negative effects of drugs These total to 225,000 deaths per year from iatrogenic causes!! What does the word iatrogenic mean? This term is defined as induced in a patient by a physician's activity, manner, or therapy. Used especially of a complication of treatment. Dr. Starfield offers several warnings in interpreting these numbers: First, most of the data are derived from studies in hospitalized patients. Second, these estimates are for deaths only and do not include negative effects that are associated with disability or discomfort. Third, the estimates of death due to error are lower than those in the IOM report. If the higher estimates are used, the deaths due to iatrogenic causes would range from 230,000 to 284,000. In any case, 225,000 deaths per year constitutes the third leading cause of death in the United States, after deaths from heart disease and cancer. Even if these figures are overestimated, there is a wide margin between these numbers of deaths and the next leading cause of death (cerebrovascular disease). Another analysis concluded that between 4% and 18% of consecutive patients experience negative effects in outpatient settings, with: 116 million extra physician visits 77 million extra prescriptions 17 million emergency department visits 8 million hospitalizations 3 million long-term admissions 199,000 additional deaths $77 billion in extra costs The high cost of the health care system is considered to be a deficit, but seems to be tolerated under the assumption that better health results from more expensive care. However, evidence from a few studies indicates that as many as 20% to 30% of patients receive inappropriate care. An estimated 44,000 to 98,000 among them die each year as a result of medical errors. This might be tolerated if it resulted in better health, but does it? Of 13 countries in a recent comparison, the United States ranks an average of 12th (second from the bottom) for 16 available health indicators. More specifically, the ranking of the US on several indicators was: 13th (last) for low-birth-weight percentages 13th for neonatal mortality and infant mortality overall 11th for postneonatal mortality 13th for years of potential life lost (excluding external causes) 11th for life expectancy at 1 year for females, 12th for males 10th for life expectancy at 15 years for females, 12th for males 10th for life expectancy at 40 years for females, 9th for males 7th for life expectancy at 65 years for females, 7th for males 3rd for life expectancy at 80 years for females, 3rd for males 10th for age-adjusted mortality The poor performance of the US was recently confirmed by a World Health Organization study, which used different data and ranked the United States as 15th among 25 industrialized countries. There is a perception that the American public "behaves badly" by smoking, drinking, and perpetrating violence." However the data does not support this assertion. The proportion of females who smoke ranges from 14% in Japan to 41% in Denmark; in the United States, it is 24% (fifth best). For males, the range is from 26% in Sweden to 61% in Japan; it is 28% in the United States (third best). The US ranks fifth best for alcoholic beverage consumption. The US has relatively low consumption of animal fats (fifth lowest in men aged 55-64 years in 20 industrialized countries) and the third lowest mean cholesterol concentrations among men aged 50 to 70 years among 13 industrialized countries. These estimates of death due to error are lower than those in a recent Institutes of Medicine report, and if the higher estimates are used, the deaths due to iatrogenic causes would range from 230,000 to 284,000. Even at the lower estimate of 225,000 deaths per year, this constitutes the third leading cause of death in the US, following heart disease and cancer. Lack of technology is certainly not a contributing factor to the US's low ranking. Among 29 countries, the United States is second only to Japan in the availability of magnetic resonance imaging units and computed tomography scanners per million population. 17 Japan, however, ranks highest on health, whereas the US ranks among the lowest. It is possible that the high use of technology in Japan is limited to diagnostic technology not matched by high rates of treatment, whereas in the US, high use of diagnostic technology may be linked to more treatment. Supporting this possibility are data showing that the number of employees per bed (full-time equivalents) in the United States is highest among the countries ranked, whereas they are very low in Japan, far lower than can be accounted for by the common practice of having family members rather than hospital staff provide the amenities of hospital care. Journal American Medical Association July 26, 2000;284(4):483-5 DR .MERCOLA'S COMMENT: Folks, this is what they call a "Landmark Article". Only several ones like this are published every year. One of the major reasons it is so huge as that it is published in JAMA which is the largest and one of the most respected medical journals in the entire world. I did find it most curious that the best wire service in the world, Reuter's, did not pick up this article. I have no idea why they let it slip by. I would encourage you to bookmark this article and review it several times so you can use the statistics to counter the arguments of your friends and relatives who are so enthralled with the traditional medical paradigm. These statistics prove very clearly that the system is just not working. It is broken and is in desperate need of repair. I was previously fond of saying that drugs are the fourth leading cause of death in this country. However, this article makes it quite clear that the more powerful number is that doctors are the third leading cause of death in this country killing nearly a quarter million people a year. The only more common causes are cancer and heart disease. This statistic is likely to be seriously underestimated as much of the coding only describes the cause of organ failure and does not address iatrogenic causes at all. Japan seems to have benefited from recognizing that technology is wonderful, but just because you diagnose something with it, one should not be committed to undergoing treatment in the traditional paradigm. Their health statistics reflect this aspect of their philosophy as much of their treatment is not treatment at all, but loving care rendered in the home. Care, not treatment, is the answer. Drugs, surgery and hospitals are rarely the answer to chronic health problems. Facilitating the God-given healing capacity that all of us have is the key. Improving the diet, exercise, and lifestyle are basic. Effective interventions for the underlying emotional and spiritual wounding behind most chronic illness are also important clues to maximizing health and reducing disease. Forcefully gesturing and speaking with obvious frustration, Carl Romanelli arguably stole the press conference on ballot access away from an understated, though far more renowned, Ralph Nader on Saturday during the Green Party?s national convention. Perhaps it was because Romanelli?s political wounds, stemming from a failed fight to remain on the 2006 ballot for U.S. senator, which Bob Casey ultimately won, are two years fresher than those of Nader, who lost a similar fight during the 2004 presidential campaign. Whatever the reason, Romanelli was hot, adamantly defending the validity of the signatures he filed and accusing state courts of corruption. He announced plans to report two Democrat-affiliated Commonwealth Court judges, Judge James R. Kelley and President Judge James Gardner Colins, to the Judicial Conduct Review Board of Pennsylvania. ?Their partisan conduct ? was reprehensible, and the courts should be held accountable for this hijacking,? said. Romanelli, a longtime political activist from Wilkes-Barre. After being bumped from the ballot, Romanelli, along with his attorney Larry Otter, was ordered to pay more than $80,000 in various court-related fees. Romanelli has resolved not to pay the fees, despite the threat that he could be jailed for contempt. ?Though I am small, I am not weak, and I?m not finished and I promise you, my friends, we will prevail,? he said before abdicating the podium to Nader. Nader painted a similar picture including Democratic Party determination to crush minor-party challengers, judicial corruption or ignorance and a broken system that punishes people for attempting to be part of the political process. ?Pennsylvania is now the King Kong of ballot-access busters in the 50 states,? Nader said. ?Philadelphia is now the center of a judicially implemented strategy that can just about knock off any third-party candidate ? so this is clearly a corrupt system. This is clearly an unconstitutional system.? He, too, chided Colins, saying ?a first-year law student wouldn?t have made the legal errors Judge Colins made? and ?Judge Colins, if he?s capable of it, should be ashamed of himself.? The ballot access issue is perpetuated, Nader said, by an unaware public, major parties unwilling to share power and media indifference. ?The first thing we have to do is generate a level of public indignation that is lacking now,? he said, noting that independent parties have played major roles in shaping America?s past. ?If we liked that, we should like it in the 21st century as well.? Nader called for a national ballot access standard for election to federal offices and appointing nonpartisan committees to check signatures instead of politically affiliated judges. Nader didn?t commit to a presidential run in 2008, saying he?d had to line up volunteers and pro bono attorneys for the expected challenges. He predicted many more failed attempts before the issue receives the attention it requires, such as a ruling from the U.S. Supreme Court, but noted ?it?s really an educational process.? * * * * * Nader accuses Democrats of trying to shut out smaller parties MICHAEL RUBINKAM The Associated Press The Philadelphia Daily News, July 14, 2007 http://www.philly.com/philly/wires/ap/news/state/pennsylvania/8511477.html READING, Pa. - Ralph Nader, appearing Saturday at the Green Party's national convention, said he is considering a 2008 presidential run but accused Democrats of trying to shut smaller parties out of the political process. "No other country comes close to providing voters with such a small number of choices and making third party candidates hurdle an almost insuperable number of obstacles just to get on the ballot," said Nader, the Green Party's 2000 presidential nominee. Democrats blamed Nader's candidacy for siphoning votes from Al Gore in 2000 and throwing the election to Republican George W. Bush. He ran as an independent in 2004 but was removed from the ballot in Pennsylvania and other large states after Democrats challenged his nominating petitions. The Pennsylvania Supreme Court later ordered Nader and his running mate to pay more than $80,000 of his opponents' legal costs , "the first defendants in American legal history to be so assessed," Nader said. Nader said he is mulling a 2008 presidential run, but before jumping in he would have to put together an organization of thousands of volunteers and pro bono lawyers to defend him against the "Democratic quadrennial assault." "We're going to be ready for them. We will confront them on every level," Nader told a news conference. "They better have clean hands." Pennsylvania Democratic spokesman Abe Amoros called Nader a demagogue who "played no small part in the election of George Bush." "People should be reminded of that every time they turn on their televisions and see American troops in Iraq," he said. The issue of ballot access is a focus of this week's Green Party convention. Party officials said their top priority is to get their 2008 nominees for president and vice president on the ballot in all 50 states. Bruce Afran, a Green Party activist and attorney who has represented Nader before the courts, said the party will be ready for challenges to Green candidates' nominating petitions. "The Democrats have blown their playbook. This can't happen twice," he said. Nader said there should be a single federal statute to govern ballot access for candidates for federal office, which he said would make it easier for independent candidates. In Pennsylvania, which he called the "King Kong of ballot access busters," Nader said a nonpartisan statewide commission should hear challenges to ballot access, not county courts that he said had many partisan judges. Later, addressing a few hundred conventioneers chanting "Run Ralph Run," Nader exhorted Greens to focus on raising money to boost their competitiveness. Many Republicans and Democrats believe "we're the ones who take votes away" from them, he said. "It's not the Republicans and Democrats in a rigged, corrupt system who take votes away from us." * * * * * Nader Mulls New Presidential Bid Associated Press Wall Street Journal, July 15, 2007 8:20 a.m. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB118450101339966886.html READING, Pennsylvania -- Consumer advocate Ralph Nader told the Green Party's national convention that he is considering a 2008 presidential run and accused Democrats of trying to shut smaller parties out of the political process. "No other country comes close to providing voters with such a small number of choices and making third party candidates hurdle an almost insuperable number of obstacles just to get on the ballot," Mr. Nader, the Green Party's 2000 presidential nominee, said Saturday. Later, addressing a few hundred conventioneers who chanted "Run Ralph Run," Mr. Nader exhorted Greens to focus on raising money to boost their competitiveness. In 2000, Nader got 2.7% of the votes in the general election. Democrats say he siphoned votes from the party's nominee, Al Gore, in Florida, New Hampshire and elsewhere, giving the election to Republican George W. Bush. In 2004, Mr. Nader was much less of a factor. He ran as an independent in but was removed from the ballot in Pennsylvania and other large states after Democrats challenged his nominating petitions. Mr. Nader said before jumping into the 2008 presidential race he would have to put together an organization of thousands of volunteers and pro bono lawyers to defend him against the "Democratic quadrennial assault." "We're going to be ready for them. We will confront them on every level," Mr. Nader told a news conference. "They better have clean hands." Mr. Nader said there should be a single federal statute to govern ballot access for candidates for federal office, which he said would make it easier for independent candidates. In 2004, Democrats went to court to keep him off the state's presidential ballot after his campaign turned in petitions with fraudulent signatures. Now they want to collect $61,000 for the legal fees. Gregory Harvey, a Philadelphia lawyer who is part of the case, said he was motivated by one thing: "I wanted to prevent Ralph Nader from doing what he did in Florida in 2000." Nader said he can afford to pay "but the necessity of a diversified electoral process can't afford it." "This is so embarrassing to me," Nader added. "Not even GM did this to me." -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Burns released his third documentary, "Majority Rules," in May 2007. The film features his discussions about democracy with six college students from six countries. The film was inspired by the war in Iraq, Burns said, which "has a thought-provoking relationship to democracy." "As the administration scrambled and the main justification for the war started to shift to promoting democracy, I realized that I wanted to make a film that took a step back and looked at this basic concept more closely," he said via e-mail. Like his 2003 debut, "Third Party," which explored the limitations of America's two-party system, Burns said, "Majority Rules" is meant to do more than just entertain. "My passion is to use art to inform, educate, and stimulate discussion," Burns said. "I'm what film critics might call an instrumentalist filmmaker, someone who believes that film can help us achieve other things, namely, making the world a better place," he said. Although Burns received some funding for "Majority Rules" from the University College of Dublin in Ireland, he covered most of the production costs himself. Burns said his interest in Connecticut politics inspired him to make his first film. "Third Party" features interviews with S. Michael DeRosa, who ran for the District 1 Connecticut State Senate seat in 2002 as a Green Party candidate, according to Burns' Web site. The film is distributed by The Cinema Guild, a company based in New York City. "Preventive Warriors," released in 2004, chronicles the Bush administration's application of the preventive war doctrine, which Burns describes as "the idea that it's legitimate to attack another country before they've attacked you simply because they are potential threats." Burns said he has sold enough copies of "Preventive Warriors" online to cover production costs. The film has been shown at film festivals in cities ranging from Golden, Colo., to Trondheim, Norway, and has been aired on cable channels in five countries. Burns said he is trying a find a distributor to reach high school and college students and their teachers, the intended audience for his work. "In a country as big as ours, distributing and promoting on your own is a difficult task," Burns said. While attending East Hartford High School, Burns shot films and submitted them as class projects. "One of my teachers, Charlene Bishko, once said in class that maybe I would be the next Steven Spielberg," Burns said. "Maybe it stuck in the back of my mind and gave me the confidence to continue with it," he said. Through his early class projects, Burns said, he discovered the power of film as a medium for conveying ideas. "If you want to communicate something to someone, and you can do it in a creative way, then you'll be most effective," Burns said. Burns graduated from Georgetown University in 1998 with a bachelor's degree in theology and from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst in 2000 with a master's in labor studies. He is working to complete his doctorate in film at the University of Birmingham in England, where he is a teaching fellow. Burns said he teaches classes on documentary film production and its history. "I really wanted to continue my investigations into American politics from another country in order to learn how others see us," Burns said. "I think we can learn so much from the rest of the world if we take the time to listen." Burns said he plans to return to Rockville in the spring of 2008 and hopes to start a production company in Connecticut. ?Journal Inquirer 2007 From greenpartyct at yahoo.com Wed Jul 18 16:33:54 2007 From: greenpartyct at yahoo.com (Green Party-CT) Date: Wed, 18 Jul 2007 13:33:54 -0700 (PDT) Subject: {news} (The Nation) Greens hear Nader , McKinney and ponder the Politics of 2008 Message-ID: <535400.66324.qm@web81408.mail.mud.yahoo.com> Greens Hear Nader, McKinney and Ponder the Politics of 2008 John Nichols The Green Party's national meeting in Reading, Pa., highlighted the fact that there are a good many Americans who want an alternative to the often disappointing choices offered them by the Republican and Democratic parties. Featuring major addresses by consumer advocate and former presidential candidate Ralph Nader, as well as former U.S. Rep. Cynthia McKinney ☼, D-Ga., the annual "Green for a Change" gathering held July 12-15 attracted hundreds of activists from across the country. Neither Nader or McKinney is running for the presidency now. But their appearances at a meeting that was seen as an opportunity for announced and potential candidates to meet and greet Green activists from around the country was significant. Many Greens believe that disenchantment with the failure of congressional Democrats to draw down the war in Iraq and hold President Bush and Vice President Cheney to account will provide an opening for a third party of the left in 2008. There are also Greens who believe that a possible independent candidacy by New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg might free up thinking with regard to the presidential race -- get voters thinking outside the two-party box -- and in so doing create opportunities for a Green presidential candidate to get more attention. (A similar scenario played out in 1980, when the independent candidacy of maverick Republican John Anderson drew attention to Libertarian and Citizen party campaigns.) To make any kind of breakthrough, however, Greens will need a national ticket that can earn notice from a media that does not treat parties that go by names other than "Democrat" and "Republican seriously. It is no secret that there are Greens who would like to see a "name" candidate like Nader or McKinney as the party's presidential nominee in 2008, and some who would like to see the two maverick political figures team up as a Nader-McKinney or McKinney-Nader ticket. Even a few of the party's lesser-known contenders are indicating that they would step aside to make way for Nader, McKinney or the both of them. One announced candidate for the Green nomination, veteran New York activist Jerry Kann, released a statement declaring that he was running in hopes that his campaign would lay the groundwork for "individuals of real stature to be the Green Party standard-bearers in 2008." Said Kann, "The Green Party has a tremendous opportunity this year to step up to the plate and be the independent third party that so many Americans want. And I believe there are two individuals who are far and away the best choices to lead the Green Party in 2008--Ralph Nader and Cynthia McKinney." Whether Nader or McKinney run, the Greens will be a presence in 2008. The party, which is now active in 46 states -- thanks to the recent affiliation of the West Virginia Mountain Party, a previously independent third party that always had a green tint ??? has committed resources to a campaign to obtain ballot status in all 50 states and the District of Columbia by next fall. That's a tall order. The deck is stacked against small parties that are seeking places on ballots that Democrats and Republicans prefer to keep to themselves. In particular, Democrats who believe that Nader's 2000 candidacy cost them the states of New Hampshire and Florida ??? and, with those losses, the presidency ??? have been aggressive about trying to keep the Greens off state ballots. Nader has made opening up the political process a major focus of his work in recent years. On Saturday, he headlined a "Ballot Access Rally" in Reading. Nader was brimming with ideas about establishing federal standards for ballot access in order to prevent states from erecting unreasonable barriers. Denouncing what he described as a "two-party dictatorship," Nader sounded like a candidate ??? or, at the least, like someone who wanted to make sure that American voters would have more than two choices in 2008. Asked specifically if he plans to run, Nader replied, "It's too early to say. I'll make up my mind before the end of the year." But he did say he has been encouraged to consider another run. McKinney was similarly circumspect. The former congresswoman's not a candidate yet, she said, but she is talking seriously to a number of Green activists. And, McKinney added, she too is getting plenty of encouragement to make the race. That was evident in Reading on Sunday, when McKinney's speech was greeted with chants of "Run, Cynthia, run!" --------------------------------------------------------------------- John Nichols' new book is THE GENIUS OF IMPEACHMENT: The Founders' Cure for Royalism. The oil law, instead of bringing peace, will allow US and UK energy companies to plunder Iraqi oil, say Greens WASHINGTON, DC -- Green Party leaders declared their support for the tens of thousands of Iraqis, including labor unions, who are protesting the Iraqi oil law 'benchmark' that the Bush Administration and supporters are seeking to impose as a condition for reconstruction aid. On July 16, Iraqis took to the streets of Basra in a demonstration organized by the Iraqi Federation of Oil Unions against the proposed law, which would place 2/3 of Iraqi oil under foreign control, granting 30-year contracts to US and UK energy corporations for 'development' of Iraq's oil resources. "The oil law is nothing more than a scheme to allow the US and Britain to pillage Iraq's source of wealth," said TE Smith, black Vietnam War veteran and member of the DC Statehood Green Party. "The oil law benchmark confirms exactly what antiwar protesters have said all along -- that President Bush's invasion and occupation of Iraq were largely motivated by 'blood for oil.' Iraqis are right to fear that the oil law will mark a return to the days of colonial plunder by western nations." The Bush Administration, with bipartisan support in Congress and the approval of most Democratic presidential candidates, is pressing the Iraqi Parliament to pass the oil law. The law would overturn Iraqi legislation passed in 1961 and 1973 to ensure that the Iraqi people enjoyed control over and profits from their own oil resources. "Democratic and Republican politicians alike want the Iraqi oil law passed, because they care more about profits for ExxonMobil, Shell, and ChevronTexaco than they do about peace, democracy, and the well-being of the Iraqi people," said Nancy Allen, member of the Maine Green Party and the party's Peace Action Committee (GPAX). "Democrats are talking about passage of the oil law as a necessary step towards withdrawal of US troops. The Green Party demands that US troops be ordered home immediately with no such conditions, that the US recognize that Iraqi oil belongs to the Iraqi people, and that we as Americans seek safe and clean alternatives to fossil fuel energy." The Green Party of the United States has opposed the war on Iraq ever since President Bush announced invasion plans in late 2002, and has called for the impeachment of Mr. Bush and Vice President Cheney for numerous abuses of power, including deceiving the American people about the reasons for waging war on Iraq. Greens have also sharply criticized Democratic Party leaders and presidential candidates for supporting the Bush Administration on the invasion and occupation, for offering belated and vague plans for a delayed pullout of US armed forces from Iraq, and for voting in support of continued funding for the Iraq War. "The occupation of Iraq is very likely to continue whether we elect Democrats or Republicans to the White House and Congress in 2008," said Kat Swift, spokesperson for the National Women's Caucus of the Green Party. "If the Iraqi Parliament succumbs to US pressure and passes the oil law, it'll require a 30-year commitment of US military personnel to protect western corporate interests in Iraq. We're urging all Americans who desire peace, stability, and justice for the people of Iraq to contact their Representatives and Senators and demand that the benchmark be dropped." As it turns out a company calling itself Connecticut's Greens had registered ctgreens.COM and was attempting to set up an online mall. People would stumble across it when they accidentally typed in .com rather than .orgThe online mall venture failed and when the domain name became available in July of 2000 I jumped in and registered it for the CT Green Party and set it up in such a way that if a person typed in ctgreens.com they would be silently redirected to ctgreens.org. Each year a renewal notice for ctgreens.com would come to our P.O. Box and each year I would renew it.So far, so good. But following the usual CT Green Party pattern, after several trouble-free years someone new to the CT Green Party came along and pointed out that they could do a much better job of renewing ctgreens.com. The CT Green Party agreed and transfered ownership of ctgreens.com from CT Greens to that individual and agreed to reimburse the individual whenever that individual renewed the domain name. The individual soon left the CT Green Party still owning ctgreens.com. However, the individual failed to renew ctgreens.com by its renewal date which was yesterday (Friday, July 20).So the situation is this. A company is holding ctgreens.com but will give it back to that individual (but not to the CT Green Party) if we pay the company $150 during the next 30 days. If we fail to pay the company $150 within 30 days then the ctgreens.com name becomes the property of that company (rather than the individual) for them to do with as they please. Please note that this is what the CT Green Party agreed to when we transfered ctgreens.com over to the individual.Currently ctgreens.com still redirects itself to ctgreens.org and will probably continue to do so for the next 30 days. My best guess is that after 30 days from now the company will change ctgreens.com into one of these "Buy this domain name" sites while it tries to line up advertisers (Greenwash companies and "Environmental" companies might be interested) for a commercial ctgreens.com. My guess is that this effort will probably fail and the company will release the name in July or August of 2008. I'll keep an eye on it.--Chris Reilly _________________________________________________________________ PC Magazine?s 2007 editors? choice for best web mail?award-winning Windows Live Hotmail. http://imagine-windowslive.com/hotmail/?locale=en-us&ocid=TXT_TAGHM_migration_HMWL_mini_pcmag_0707 -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... We've pushed the cosponsor list for H. Res. 333 up to 14. Chairman John Conyers says that if we get 3 more he'll begin the impeachment proceedings. And many Congress Members must be recognizing that there is no other path available. Cheney and Bush have repeatedly refused to comply with subpoenas, ordered former staffers not to comply, and announced that the Justice Department will not enforce contempt citations from Congress. When a special prosecutor attempted to hold this administration accountable, Cheney's chief of staff obstructed justice, and Cheney persuaded Bush to commute his sentence. There is no course left for Congress but Impeachment. On Monday, July 23rd, the fifth anniversary of the meeting that produced the Downing Street Minutes, Cindy Sheehan, Ray McGovern, Rev. Lennox Yearwood, Ann Wright, Debra Sweet, Dave Lindorff, David Swanson, Jodie Evans, Medea Benjamin, Kevin Zeese, and Tina Richards will lead a march to Chairman Conyers office and not leave until he agrees to begin impeachment proceedings. If you cannot be there, you can take two minutes on Monday and do two things: phone Chairman Conyers at 202-225-5126 and ask him to start the impeachment of Dick Cheney; and phone your own Congress Member at 202-224-3121 and ask them to immediately call Conyers' office to express their support for impeachment. Green leaders call attention to the racially motivated case of the 'Jena Six' in Louisiana WASHINGTON, DC -- Green Party leaders called the US's high percentages of people in prison and racial disparities in incarceration a "shame on America" and urged dramatic steps to reverse the criminalization of large numbers of Americans. Greens expressed special alarm at recent cases that have revealed systematic racial bias in law enforcement and sentencing, including the prosecution of six black high school students in Jena, Louisiana, for fighting after racial tensions sparked by the display of three nooses in a schoolyard in 2006. > The students initially faced 100-year sentences for attempted murder after an incident that many believe should have led to suspensions from school. An all-white jury convicted one of the students, who now faces a 22-year prison term. No white students were prosecuted. "The case of the Jena Six is emblematic of how people of color in the US face prosecution and sentencing," said Clifford Thornton, , Green candidate for Governor of Connecticut in 2006 and co-founder of Efficacy, Inc. >, which promotes major reforms in drug policy. "The Jena Six prosecution is one of the more blatant and scandalous examples of how our justice system regularly criminalizes black and brown people -- especially children." Greens cited a recent study by the Sentencing Project >, which revealed severe disparities based on race and ethnicity in incarceration, with African Americans imprisoned at over five times the rate of whites and Latinos imprisoned at nearly double the white rate. Greens further noted that America has 5% of the world's population and 25% of all the world's prisoners, far surpassing Russia, China, and North Korea. Green leaders listed several urgent measures to overhaul the justice system: a.. Federal monitoring of prosecutorial practices and sentencing patterns in all jurisdictions where such disparities are evident, in accord with civil rights laws. b.. Cancellation of the war on drugs, which Greens have called "a war on youth and people of color" >. According to the DEA, FBI, Department of Justice, police agencies, and numerous public interest groups and researchers, 72% of all illegal drug users and most of those involved in the drug trade are white, while African-Americans make up only 13% of all illegal drug users and a tiny percentage of drug importers. Despite these numbers, the overwhelming percentage of those incarcerated for drugs are black. c.. Abolition of the death penalty. "The death penalty is already barbaric and we know that it has been applied in many cases in which people convicted and executed were later exonerated," said Alfred Molison, Co-Chair Green Party Black Caucus >. "But the death penalty should also be abolished because black, brown, and poor white people disproportionately get executed. When those who can't afford to defend themselves adequately in court are targeted for the ultimate and irreversible punishment, the punishment itself becomes murder." d.. Repeal of zero tolerance and mandatory sentencing statutes, which enlarge the power of prosecutors and erode judicial discretion. e.. An end to abuses of the plea-bargaining system, which have resulted in the imprisonment of innocent people who lack the financial resources to defend themselves sufficiently in court. f.. An end to the privatization of the prison system, which creates economic incentives to put more people behind bars, since corporate prison owners and contractors increase their profits when more cells are filled up. Greens have drawn links between privatized prisons and draconian drug laws, the targeting of poor people and people of color for prosecution, mandatory and severe sentencing, high death penalty rates in some states, and other policies. "We ask Louisiana Governor Kathleen Blanco to step in and overturn the Jena Six convictions," said Diane F. White, Pennsylvania delegate to the Green Party's National Committee, Acting Corresponding Secretary for the Black Caucus, and "Dismantling Racism Ally." "The state of our justice system should provoke outrage from every American who has some sense of real justice. Democrats and Republicans have tolerated racial bias, unfair sentencing practices, and abuses in our courts and prisons for too long. The US imprisons more of its population than any other country in the world. We can no longer trust them to correct these injustices. The Green Party exists because we need a political party, candidates, and elected officeholders to reverse bipartisan laws and policies that have turned record numbers of Americans, especially African Americans and Latinos, into inmates." This resolution put GPUS squarely on record as "posing an electoral challenge to the corporate-funded and controlled two-party system" and as resolving to "run electoral campaigns full out". The political climate as we enter 2008 is different from the political climate in 2004. GPUS is beginning to show hopeful signs on the fundraising front. Numerous Green candidates posted strong showings in 2006 elections, demonstrating that the public is increasingly willing to listen to the Green message. GPUS's electoral committees, which have had limited resources to work with recently, have nevertheless seen recent increases in activity. Numerous Green congressional candidates have already declared, and Green ballot drives are already underway in numerous states. At the 2003 Annual National Meeting, the GNC staked a clear position to run for President in 2004; but prior to the convention, official party statements were much more ambivalent. These mixed messages became part of a larger fabric of Green inactivity that helped spur many Green activists into abandoning the party to support corporatist candidates. GPUS's lack of backbone heading into the 2004 convention also had a sharply detrimental impact on ballot drives, as several states, confronted with the possibility that they were working tirelessly for ballot lines that weren't even going to be used, gave up hope early. GPUS can not afford to make the same mistake in 2007 that it made in 2003. This resolution, following largely from Proposal 218, will make the Green Party's intentions clear for 2008: We will field a presidential ticket in 2008 and will apply resources to the best of our ability to give our nominees the strongest support possible. PROPOSAL The Green National Committee hereby adopts the following resolution: WHEREAS the GPUS National Committee has clearly stated, through passage of Proposal 218, a commitment to run "full out" campaigns, and WHEREAS running "full out" requires gathering the greatest amount of resources such that a campaign can be as strong as possible, and WHEREAS the reality of modern American politics is that the longer we wait to make our involvement clear, the more resources we will lose, and WHEREAS past election cycles have demonstrated the absolute necessity of making it clear that we will hold a competitive nomination process culminating in our quadrennial presidential nominating convention lest we send mixed signals to Greens, prospective candidates, the media, and the public at large, and WHEREAS prospective presidential candidates considering whether to run as a Green will look for clarity from the national party as to intentions for 2008, and will be encouraged by a party with determination to run, BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that it is the firm intention of the Green National Committee that the Green Party will nominate a presidential ticket at its 2008 convention, and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that it is the firm intention of the Green National Committee to strengthen our eventual ticket by generating and applying resources as available to ensure, among other things, that we will maximize the number of ballot lines that our nominees will appear on, and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Green National Committee hereby directs its officers and committees, when addressing the matter of the party's intentions in 2008, and to the extent appropriate given the context of any such public statements, that the Green Party is conducting a contested presidential nomination process and that we will be nominating a presidential ticket at our 2008 convention. This is the second in a series of articles exploring the stories of Lower Fairfield County's activists. They are the representatives of their respective issues ? often their voices and faces are they only reason the public is aware of an issue; be it child advocacy, environmentalism, immigration or animal rights. This series will explore our activists, our issues and the connections between the two. By A.J. O'CONNELL aoconnell at wiltonvillager.com STAMFORD ? David Bedell likes to quote Green Party founder Ralph Nader when he tells the story of how he first became involved in politics. "'If you don't turn on to politics, politics will turn on you,'" said Bedell, secretary of the Green Party of Fairfield County, and adds, wryly, that politics turned on him first. "My political awakening began in 1980, when I had to register for the draft," said Bedell, 45. The military draft was abandoned in the early '70s but reinstated by President James Carter in response to the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. After registering under protest, Bedell began what would become a lifetime of activism; joining the Central Committee for Conscientious Objectors and other pacifist organizations. Later he campaigned against nuclear weapons, traveled to China during the student democracy movement and, later, in 1996, became involved with the newly-minted Green Party. "I think it was the first time I saw an umbrella organization addressing such a wide range of progressive issues," said the Stamford resident. He was impressed by the four pillars of the party: non-violence, environmentalism, social justice and economic justice. In 2002, he became an officer for the Fairfield County Greens. Bedell practices what he preaches. When he's not organizing meetings or putting Green Party candidates on the ballots for various state and local offices, he is a strict vegetarian who spends his days working for the Sabin Vaccine Institute in New Canaan, a non-profit organization devoted to fighting diseases which affect the poor. Although he does share a car with his girlfriend's son, Bedell rides the train and his bicycle to and from work. And although Bedell much prefers the behind-the-scenes roles of party secretary and campaign manager, Bedell runs the 500-member Fairfield County chapter in absence of any other officers [the chairman departed two years ago and was never replaced]. He also dutifully runs for office every year, an example to his fellow Greens. "I think every activist should run for office," said Bedell. He has run for probate judge and constable in Stamford and for state senate last year. "I didn't run too hard," he said. "I was just a placeholder." Bedell believes that Greens ought to take advantage of the election season ? the only time when most of the population pays attention to politics ? to make themselves and their issues known. This year Bedell is putting up a slate of five candidates, including himself, for offices in Stamford, Norwalk, and New Canaan. He is again running for constable, using the race as a way of advocating for clean energy by vowing to deliver all court documents on his bicycle. Darek Shapiro, a local architect and outspoken proponent of clean energy who ran in 2005 as the Green's mayoral candidate in Stamford praised Bedell's devotion to the Greens. "He's definitely worth bragging about," he said. Shapiro said Bedell spends hours communicating with people in the party and said that he would not have run for mayor were it not for Bedell's perseverance. Bedell's dedication to a third major party is a way of changing the world ? or at least the country, which is run by only two parties, the Republicans and the Democrats, he said. "He's committed to creating a society that's based on social justice," said Shapiro. "That's about all he thinks about." -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... This amendment will help mitigate the bad effect of an otherwise pork-filled bill for corporate farmers. The vote is today. Congressman Murphy of the 5th district can be reach at 860-223-8412 Thanks Justine ----- Original Message ----- Action needed: urge CT Representatives to support real farm bill reform Hello New Milford! This week, the House will be asked to extend a farm bill that will funnel billions of dollars in taxpayers' money to the same narrow group of the largest subsidized farms in a handful of House districts. It is a bill that will continue to do too little to feed the hungry, help the environment, promote healthy food choices, reduce the deficit, or comply with our international trade obligations. If passed, more than half of all farm spending would continue to flow to just 20 congressional districts for the next five years. I'm hoping that you can find a minute to call Congressman Murphy and ask him to support the Fairness in Farm and Food Policy amendment, which will be offered by Congressmen Kind and Flake. This amendment increase funding for farm bill programs that matter to CT - programs that help farmers improve conservation on their farm, protect farm and forestland from development, and increase access to fresh, locally grown produce for all consumers, particularly people with low income, senior citizens, and children. The House Agriculture Committee's bill does not do enough to address these priorities, and it is important that CT members hear from their constituents that they want a farm bill that actually meets their needs. I've attached some talking points that explain more about the amendment and how it would improve the committee's bill. I'd appreciate it if you could call Congressman Murphy and ask him to support the amendment, and ask others that you know in CT who are concerned about agriculture, the environment, and nutrition to call their Representative as well. Feel free to forward this email, and feel free to call with questions. The vote is scheduled for this Thursday. URL: From dbedellgreen at hotmail.com Tue Jul 31 00:44:20 2007 From: dbedellgreen at hotmail.com (David Bedell) Date: Tue, 31 Jul 2007 00:44:20 -0400 Subject: {news} Hamden Daily News: Kelly McCarthy nominated Message-ID: http://www.hamdendailynews.com/town_gov.html#green July 26, 2007 McCarthy's Official By Sharon Bass When Kelly McCarthy ran for her district seat in '05, the Green Party woman garnered 40 percent of the vote in a three-way race -- possibly an unprecedented high for a third-party Hamden candidate. Democrat Willie Mewborn won with 49 percent, and Republican Henry Platt got 10 percent. It was a year when the Democrats soundly defeated every opponent and Mayor Craig Henrici got 81 percent of the vote. Last night in McCarthy's Treadwell Avenue living room, she received her party's endorsement for another stab at the 5th District Council spot. This time the 29-year-old will likely face just one challenger -- Democratic at-large Councilwoman Kath Schomaker. The Republicans haven't put anyone up so far. And Mewborn is calling it quits after one term. McCarthy's campaign manager, attorney Mark Sanders, made the nomination and Jeffry Larson of the 4th District seconded. (Party rules allow any Greens present at a nominating convention to vote regardless of their home address.) And "McCarthy for Council" was reborn. "To say Kelly is well qualified for this position is the understatement of the century," said Sanders. "She's been extremely concerned about town-wide issues as well as her district." He described McCarthy as the quintessential community activist. The Yale Divinity School grad, who runs a tutoring business, has been involved in the Whitneyville Civic Association for years. She was just elected president. She chairs the town's Clean & Green Commission. Organizes cleanups around Hamden. Is a founding member of the grassroots group Hamden Alliance for Responsible Taxation, created after the 2005 revaluation that hiked many residents' property taxes by double digits. And sat on the Newhall Advisory Committee, a group the state formed to give a voice to residents about the soil-contamination controversy in that neighborhood. (A controversy the state has yet to resolve.) "Kelly has done yeoman's work," said Sanders, also a member of HART. In recognition, the Library Board named McCarthy a Hamden 2007 Notable. "That's an honor that's usually given to people later on in life," her campaign manager said. "She's got the character and intelligence and energy to make this [Council] run." "I think it's terrific. It sounds like you've been doing the work," Charlie Pillsbury, co-chair of the New Haven Green Party, told the candidate. "It's different this time because I know what I need to do," McCarthy said. "But it's a different race so it's sort of its own animal. My biggest disappointment starting out in this campaign is who my opponent is. I expected Kath to be more of a champion of the people and fight for southern Hamden. I was expecting her to be more environmentally conscious. I just feel she's let us down and the 5th District and southern Hamden." Schomaker's at-large seat was said to be vacated for retired Police Chief Jack Kennelly. He was endorsed on a four-candidate slate with the three remaining at-large incumbents by the Democratic Town Committee at its July 23 convention. "I think there's a lot that needs to be done for southern Hamden that the Council has been neglecting. The Democratic Party politicians have been out of control," said McCarthy. She cited their refusal to seriously consider a multi-year tax phase-in following the '05 revaluation, while New Haven and North Haven did so to take some of the burden off low- and middle-income homeowners who were typically hurt the most. "There was ridicule and mockery toward citizens who were really suffering. It was a travesty," she said. Larson said the Henrici Administration "has it in for the library. It just seems to me the mayor is just hostile toward rational library planning." Henrici eliminated two technology librarians from the new budget and added a second IT person to his office. "It's just nonsense," said Larson. "I think a lot of people in Hamden are proud of their library." "I have been let down time and time again by Henrici," said McCarthy. "I don 't care what you say. I only care about what you've done." She said she won't be supporting Henrici in his bid for re-election this November and will instead throw her political weight on Republican mayoral candidate Ron Gambardella -- despite the vast social and ideological differences between their parties. "I don't agree 100 percent with Ron's ideas," the Green said, "but I think he has his head and heart in the right place. And his focus is on Hamden and the people who live here. And that's what a mayor should do. And I can't ignore the fact that he was one of the only people on the Legislative Council who was willing to listen to the phase-in and about other financial problems." Republican Town Committee Chair Mike Iezzi said it's too premature to discuss supporting anyone outside of his party. But he spoke highly of McCarthy and her principles and said, "I'm very happy to hear she's supporting Ron. It further exemplifies that Ron is gaining support from people outside of the Republican Party." From dbedellgreen at hotmail.com Tue Jul 31 00:53:15 2007 From: dbedellgreen at hotmail.com (David Bedell) Date: Tue, 31 Jul 2007 00:53:15 -0400 Subject: {news} Hamden Daily News: earlier report on McCarthy Message-ID: http://www.hamdendailynews.com/ArchivesTGJune07.html June 21, 2007 The Fightin' 5th McCarthy's running By Sharon Bass Two years ago, Kelly McCarthy and Kath Schomaker seemed to be on the same page. The Whitneyville friends were supportive of each other when Democrat Schomaker ran (successfully) for an at-large Legislative Council seat and McCarthy, a Green, ran (unsuccessfully) for her district seat. The page has turned. This November, the two women will fight it out for the 5th. "It's a political party move to attempt to shut me down," said McCarthy of Councilwoman Schomaker running for district instead of at-large again. "The Democrats figured I wouldn't run against Kath." McCarthy, 29, pulled in 40.3 percent of the vote in '05, a healthy number for a third-party candidate, especially considering two years ago Mayor Craig Henrici was elected with 81 percent against Republican Dick Reilly. Henrici's coattails inarguably helped bring victory to all of the under-ticket. Democrat Willie Mewborn won the 5th D with 49.2 percent and Republican Henry Platt got 10.4 percent. (Neither man is running this year.) This time around McCarthy said she feels more empowered. "I didn't even have the tax issue in 2005. People won't tolerate tax increases," she said. "I feel a lot more confident about this campaign because I know what I did wrong last time. Kath has a record and I think she needs to be held accountable." McCarthy, who lives on Treadwell Street, tutors schoolchildren for a living. She's co-chair of the Clean & Green Commission, chair of the Whitneyville Civic Association's traffic division and a member of the grassroots tax-relief group Hamden Alliance for Responsible Taxation. She has a master' s degree from Yale Divinity School. The Green Party candidate said the Henrici Administration has been more about keeping the Democratic machine in power and handing out favors and jobs to friends than helping the everyday Hamdenite. "It's been glaringly obvious to me that this administration does not have the needs of the citizens of the town in mind," McCarthy said. "There were lots of campaign promises of things that won't be done. 'I won't put my needs before the citizens.' And he asks for a [$570 monthly] car allowance. 'I'm not going to take a [town] car.' Lots of broken promises." She said she's likewise disappointed with Schomaker. "We thought she would be a champion of the people," said McCarthy. "But that didn't happen." She said her district's needs have been largely ignored -- crime is increasing, there aren't enough cops around and sidewalks need repair. Broad Coalition McCarthy expects support from the district Democrats who rallied around her in '05 as well as from Republicans. "No one expected me to do as well as I did [in 2005]," she said. "It showed Hamden that independent candidates are a viable option. I know people in Hamden are disheartened about how things are run. It's healthy to have different opinions -- and not opinions based on a party agenda. "I am an adversary to the mayor and to the people sitting on the Council," McCarthy continued. "As a concerned citizen, I shouldn't be. But I'm viewed as someone who's challenging so therefore they must discredit me, take me down. "The average resident in my community loves me and the person who attends all the DTC [Democratic Town Committee] meetings hates me. There are exceptions. But the rubberstamp types are absolutely against myself and members of HART or anyone who says anything against them. "You have to be willing to be hated by the people who are desperately trying to maintain the status quo. Until there is reform in the very basic structure of how Hamden government runs, we won't see the improvement we need." Tax activist Mark Sanders is McCarthy's campaign manager, and Diane Hoffman is treasurer. The New London Green Party has nominated four city residents to run for City Council and Board of Education in the 2007 municipal elections. *Kenric Hanson*, who narrowly missed election to the Board of Education two years ago, was endorsed to run for City Council. "Now is the time," said Hanson, "to move our community forward with sustainable development and prudent investments in education and municipal infrastructure. New London's future generations will reap the quality of life that we are willing to work for today." New London native *Art Costa*, also running for a seat on Council, is president of OceanView Associates, LLC, a consulting firm that provides business process management. He holds an MA in Cognitive Science and was formerly an IT executive at Cigna. A member of New London Earth Day, Costa seeks to build community through environmental stewardship, grassroots economics and a cooperative approach to public safety. Longtime early childhood educator and advocate *Ronna Stuller* was endorsed as a candidate for Board of Education. "A high-quality educational system is an investment in our future," said Stuller. In order to forge a real partnership among schools, parents and the community-at-large, she promises to work towards a more transparent budget process, creative use of our school facilities and the involvement of parents as full partners in their children's learning. *Davana Grabel*, also a candidate for Board of Education, is the mother of two young daughters who have been educated at home since birth. Grabel favors a holistic approach to curriculum and sees tremendous potential in the development of magnet schools. She and her husband Justin are active in New London's arts community and founded Applied Sustainable Aquaculture, a non-profit corporation devoted to restoring coral reefs. The Green Party is committed to sustainability, social and economic justice, grassroots democracy and nonviolence. Due to their firm belief that government should be accountable to its citizens, New London Green Party candidates do not accept contributions from corporations, lobbyists, political action committees or labor unions. The New London Greens have run candidates in New London municipal elections since 2001. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... URL:
