Subject: [ctupmiddleeast] On this date Rachel Corrie Murdered in 2003 - a few words in memory

Pause for a moment today in memory of Rachel Corrie, the American activist who was murdered on this date is 2003 by the drivers of Israeli military bulldozer serial number 949623 as she tried to defend the home of a Palestinian phamacist from demolition. Hundreds of homes had been destroyed in Rafah in those days. Rachel from Olympia, Washington had come to the Gaza Strip as part of the non-violent International Solidarity Movement. The "internationals" put themselves in front of bulldozers to protect homes, wells, farmland, etc. The idea was that the Israeli army wouldn't dare kill Westerners. But this was 2003 and Bush and Sharon were testing new levels of savagery. Westerners were murdered by the IDF. On this date a bulldozer drove over Rachel and then backed over her with the blade down. For an eyewitness account see

The Nasarallah home that Rachel died to defend was totally destroyed some six months later.

The Israeli government held an investigation, declared it all a regrettable accident and decided Rachel was the most to blame. Though she was an American citizen neither the Administration nor the U.S. Congress would mount its own investigation. No one was ever punished for Rachel's murder. No compensation was paid.

She suffered the same fate as literally thousands of Palestinians civilians at the hands of the Israeli military.

Today the Israeli govenment aggressively attempts to keep out all International Solidarity Movement volunteers from the territories.
