Greens celebrate 25th anniversary of party's
North American beginnings

OTTAWA - Greens in Canada are celebrating the
25th anniversary of the founding of the Green
Party of British Columbia (GPBC) today, which was
the first Green Party in North America. Adriane
Carr, current deputy leader of the federal Green
Party, was a founder of the GPBC and acted as the
party's first leader.

"Green politics in Canada have come a long way
since the Green Party of British Columbia was
founded," said Ms. Carr. "Nationally, the Green
Party has support in the double digits and the
most recent BC poll shows the GPBC with a
remarkable 21 percent in the province
(Environics, January 28, 2008 ). I am so proud
and honoured to have been there for the birth of
this phenomenon. I am even more excited by the
recent surge in public support that spells future
success in federal and provincial elections."

Ms. Carr reprised her role as leader of the GPBC
in 2000 and led the party through the 2001 and
2005 provincial elections, where the GPBC
received historic levels of support from voters
(12.4 and 9.2 percent, respectively) and where
Ms. Carr was included in the televised leaders'
debates.

"This is a time to reflect on the accomplishments
of Greens in Canada ," said Green Party leader
Elizabeth May. "While Canada 's outdated
first-past-the-post electoral system poses
challenges to smaller parties with broad,
national support, like the Greens, we have
elected representatives to municipal and other
local governments. Green parties in Canada - both
federal and provincial - are enjoying record
successes in elections and in polls between
votes. In the next federal election, we will
elect Green MPs to the House of Commons."

Federal Green leader Elizabeth May founded the
Small Party in the late 70s, whose members later
found the Green Party of Canada in 1983.
Internationally, more than 70 Green Parties exist
in countries around the world, collectively
forming the Global Greens.
