Dear Pat,

The Sullivan Campaign thanks you and everyone in attendence at Monday's
meeting for taking the time in preparing for a very important debate. We
look forward in participating and assisting you in anyway.

The potential participation in the New London debate of candidates from
the Green and Libertarian parties has emerged as an issue of importance.
My counterpart in the Courtney campaign, Mr. Matt McGrath, in a letter
dated September 4, pleaded for their inclusion.

Not surprisingly, Mr. McGrath and I see things differently. The Courtney
campaign no doubt wants all challengers on stage to make it more
difficult for any one challenger to stand out. Conversely, I would
clearly prefer a one-on-one between Sean Sullivan and Joe Courtney so
that my candidate could get fifty percent of the available time.

Of course, these debates are not for the candidates, but for the people.
On behalf of the people, an argument could be made either way. Mr.
McGrath has made one argument, asking that all voices be heard. On the
other hand, limiting debate to candidates who demonstrate substantial
support provides focus and serves to clarify the differences between
candidates who stand a reasonable chance of prevailing in the election.

Far from being arbitrary, your rules appear designed to navigate through
difficult situations such as the one presented here. I trust that
whatever action you take, you will do so with the best interests of the
people of Connecticut’s Second district in mind.

Very truly yours,

Scott Veley, Campaign Manager

Sean Sullivan for Congress
