Thumbnail image for Green Party button.jpgGreen Party congressional
candidates are protesting that they won't be allowed in League of Women
Voters debates in the state.

This year, the party managed to put up a candidate for each of
Connecticut's five congressional districts. But a League official was
quoted from a letter to the rejected candidates: "Using criteria
reaffirmed by the League of Women Voters in April of 2007, and
re-affirmed in April 2008, the committee made a determination that your
candidacy does not meet all of our criteria. Therefore, unfortunately, we
must deny your eligibility to participate in League-sponsored debates
during the 2008 election season."

About a week ago, the Green Party had complained that the 1st District
had no scheduled debates. I contacted the campaign of incumbent Rep. John
Larson to ask about it. Spokesman Barry Feldman said Larson had agreed to
a League of Women Voters debate in Manchester, but it hadn't yet been
scheduled. When asked whether Larson would mind the Green Party being
there, Feldman said, "The congressman doesn't have any problem with
that."
