U.S. Rep. Joseph Courtney, a Democrat who won the nation's closest
congressional race two years ago, has better than 2-1 lead in his first
re-election campaign, according to a poll released today.

The Center for Survey Research and Analysis at the University of
Connecticut shows Courtney leading his Republican challenger, Sean
Sullivan, 50 percent to 23 percent. Scott Deshefy of the Green Party was
supported by 2 percent.

Courtney, who unseated Republican Rob Simmons by 83 votes to win eastern
Connecticut's 2nd District in 2006, gets high job approval marks, with 61
percent saying they approve and 17 percent disapprove.

The poll found the economy is nearly the only significant issue: 56
percent identified it as their biggest concern; no other issue topped 10
percent.

Ninety-six percent described the economy as poor (64 percent) or fair (32
percent).

The poll of 477 likely voters was conducted from Sept. 22 to 28 and has a
margin of error of plus or minus 4.5 percentage points.
