This program removes the influence of special interest money on candidates, and frees them from the constant money chase so they can spend time with voters. (Single Payer Healthcare Reform*) Declaring health care to be a human right, hundreds of advocates for a single-payer, Medicare-for-All health program will protest at 18 senators? offices around the country on Dec. 10, International Human Rights Day. *Many will risk arrest by committing acts of civil disobedience.* * * Organizers say the coordinated sit-ins and other actions will spotlight the ?complete inadequacy? of the present House and Senate bills, which, they say, will leave at least 17 million people uninsured and millions more with shoddy coverage, unprotected from skyrocketing medical costs. The actions are part of a national civil disobedience campaign for single-payer health reform led by the Mobilization for Health Care for All. The campaign has gained notoriety for having organized more than 35 sit-ins across the country in recent weeks, targeting private health insurance companies and exposing their role as the real ?death panels? that decide who lives and who dies based on ability to pay. Medicare-for-All supporters advocate a publicly financed, privately delivered health care system similar to Medicare. The single-payer system would be financed entirely through taxes, cover everyone, ensure freedom to choose doctors, and save about $400 billion annually by eliminating wasteful paperwork, bureaucracy and insurance company profits. The vast majority of people would pay less in taxes than what they presently pay for premiums and out-of-pocket costs like co-pays and deductibles. Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-VT, introduced a single-payer amendment to the Senate leadership?s health bill on December 2nd that would essentially replace the existing bill?s language with an improved Medicare-for-All plan. Sanders has also announced plans to introduce another measure that would permit individual states to experiment with their own single-payer programs. December 10th is the 61st anniversary of the signing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, of which the United States is a signatory. Single-payer actions commemorating Human Rights Day are taking place in 18 cities. Your insurance company runs the show. It can protect its profits by denying coverage for sick people. It can cap coverage so your expenses do not get out of control. It can, as the free market is wont to do, reward its executives with salaries that are truly obscene. It can deny coverage about any time. That's the free market for you. After all, Senator Lieberman has values, Like the Republicans he supports, he appreciates that money is more important than people. He always supports plenty of money for war though. For his good service, Senator Lieberman has been richly rewarded with contributions from health & insurance interests of $3,308,621 Lieberman says "the public doesn't support the public option". (A recent public opinion poll shows he is wrong. "More than three out of every four Americans feel it is important to have a "choice" between a government-run health care insurance option and private coverage,..." (Read more at: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/08/20/new-poll-77-percent-suppo_n_264375.html ) Sign the petition at http://BoldProgressives.org/majorityvote to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid "Any Democratic senators who support a Republican attempt to block a vote on health care reform should be stripped of their leadership titles. Americans deserve a clean up-or-down vote on health care." If the US was a real democracy, we should have the right to recall Senator Lieberman. Mr. Ban told journalists at UN Headquarters in New York that Ms. Maathai of Kenya will be inducted as a Messenger of Peace at a ceremony tomorrow afternoon in Copenhagen, where the UN climate change conference is taking place. ?Professor Maathai?s long record of achievement in environmental conservation and sustainable development makes her an excellent choice,? the Secretary-General said. Professor Maathai, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004, founded the grassroots group known as the Green Belt Movement, which has planted more than 40 million trees on community lands across Africa and worked to improve environmental conservation and reduce poverty. The only African woman to win that award, Professor Maathai has also served as a Government minister, lawmaker, academic and women?s rights advocate over the past four decades. Messengers of Peace are individuals widely recognized for their talents in the arts, academia, sports, entertainment and other fields who work to help raise worldwide awareness of UN ideals and activities. Through their public appearances, contacts with the international media and humanitarian work, they expand public understanding of how the UN helps to improve the lives of people everywhere. The other Messengers of Peace and their areas of focus include: conductor Daniel Barenboim (peace and tolerance); actor George Clooney (peacekeeping); author Paulo Coelho (poverty and intercultural dialogue); actor Michael Douglas (disarmament); primatologist Jane Goodall (conservation and environmental issues) and violinist Midori Goto (Millennium Development Goals and Youth). The other five Messengers are: Princess Haya Bint al Hussein (Millennium Development Goals and hunger); cellist Yo-Yo Ma (youth); actor Charlize Theron (ending violence against women); Nobel Laureate Elie Wiesel (human rights); and singer-songwriter Stevie Wonder (people with disabilities).
