Dear IC,

French Green Catherine Greze, representative of the European Federation to the Global Green Coordination, sent their party's response to the horror in Gaza after receiving our press release..

Here's a rough translation from the French (which follows) Please offer any corrections and comments!
 I appreciate their outrage to what's happening, though I disagree with their apparent view that Hamas is only a terrorist group ("inhabitants of Gaza, taken hostage by Hamas as well as by the Israeli army").

BTW, I assume that the statement refers to the passage of the EU-Israel Association Agreement on 12/4/08. According to the anti-apartheid campaign, this agreement

"will enable far greater Israeli participation in European Community programs. Originally, the EU had stated that the vote on this issue would not take place until 2009, but it seems clear that the EU and Israel are attempting to minimize the voice of international civil society by suddenly announcing that it has been moved up to December 4. The proposed agreement offers to Israel full access to the EU scientific, academic, research and technical programmes, and will significantly deepen EU-Israeli cooperation and integration in many important sectors. It ignores the fact that these sorts of cooperation agreements that increase Israel's relationships with the international community are one of Israel's primary means of its ongoing occupation, the displacement of and systematic racial discrimination against the Palestinian people. By engaging in this agreement, the EU sends the message that it effectively condones the Israeli apartheid regime, and that it will not challenge Israel on its massive violations of Palestinian rights."

Peace?
Justine

Stop the Israeli Aggression Against the Inhabitants of Gaza!

The enormous military resources employed by the Israeli army against Gaza are disproportionate to the rocket fire of Hamas. After having suffered the blockade imposed by the Israeli government, and the violation of the terms of the Road Map (halt the establishment of new colonies, freedom of movement for people . . ), the inhabitants of Gaza, taken hostage by Hamas as well as by the Israeli army, are now being bombarded.

The victims, the vast majority civilians, are already numerous. This disproportionate response of the Israeli government diminishes the hope of a solution to this conflict.

One must ask why (wonder?) the Israeli offensive is taking place on the eve of the general elections.
One must ask (wonder?) whether the new European policy with respect to Israel hasn't given free reign to the Israeli government on Gaza.

The Greens Demand:

An immediate end to the military operation;
A reconsideration of the economic accord between the EU and Israel if that nation does not maintain its commitments:
A resumption of the peace process under the aegis of the internatational community and the recognition of the Palestinian Authority.

The Greens call for continuing demonstrations against this new aggression and demand a firm reaction from the French government, the European community, and from the UN in order to halt this aggression and the bombardment of Gaza.

Dear Justine,

Please find in return our press release

All the best and happy new year to you

l' arrêt immédiat de l'opération militaire ;
la remise en cause de l'accord commercial de l'Union Européenne avec Israël si ce pays ne tient pas ses engagements ;
