"When logs come down a river, they sometimes jam up, and someone has to kick them free," Russell said. And in a city long dominated by Democratic Party rule, what better way to kick than for the two weaker parties to join forces. "I believe the city needs a shake-up. There is too much nepotism and cronyism," Russell said last week. "Coalition building would be a way to change the balance of power in the city." And indeed, the coalition built by the Greens and the Republicans on Tuesday helped unlock the Democratic majority on the council, a remarkable win given an overwhelming voter registration handicap. (It didn't hurt that dysfunctional Democrats, busy locking out one of their own, practically handed them the keys to the election.) Not only was Russell the third highest voter-getter in the council race, Green candidate Ronna Stuller finished fourth for Board of Education. That's quite a showing for a party with only about 50 registered voters in the city. Russell and Stuller are the first Greens to win council or board seats in New London and are among only a handful from the party to hold elected office around the state. At their campaign headquarters Tuesday night, a corner of the lobby of Union Station, the Greens were reliably understated, although a small cheer went up when preliminary results showed their only two candidates had won. "The Green Party had a clean sweep," someone offered slyly. "I guess Green is in," said a grinning Stuller, who is also chairwoman of the party. Clearly the cross endorsements of Russell and Stuller by the Republicans were instrumental in the party's success this election, and in a curious way the arrangement supports some of the party's unorthodox political thinking. They are not people easily herded. Russell was actually a lifelong Democrat before changing parties and running for the legislature as a Republican. He ended up as a Green council candidate this election when he didn't at first find a place on the Republican council slate. "I am not a party guy and I vote across party lines," he said. "I don't see the big issue of parties at this level." Stuller, too, told me she votes for individuals, whatever their party might be. Stuller said she and other Greens supported a lot of Republicans this year, mostly because they wanted more of the city's business done in the open, rather than in closed party caucuses. "When one party has a monopoly on power, even one as fractured as the Democrats are now, everything becomes a done deal," she said. By that same thinking, she said, the Greens didn't want to see a Republican sweep either. Even the Greens, she added, wouldn't want all seven council seats to themselves. "The Greens have never wanted to run the city. We just wanted to be in the mix," she said. When I heard her say that I tried to imagine Anthony Basilica, chairman of the Democratic Town Committee, saying the same thing, and I had to chuckle at the thought. I might have tried calling Basilica Tuesday night to run the idea by him, but I figured, given the Democrats' poor showing, that he might already be home in bed, right where he was the October night when the top vote-getter in the last council election (he fell to seventh in Tuesday's voting) was busy locking the mayor out of his campaign headquarters. I worked yesterday on Allan's campaign for the entire day. I believe I have an accurate but limited view of the campaign from inside it. On the positive side Allan had close to 50 people working on the campaign. His campaign created a list of supporters that were obtained through extensive canvassing that helped to get his voters out on election day. He also made outreach to hundreds of individuals in the 10th ward and to numerous labor and other groups during the campaign. He got the endorsement of many unions in New Haven and other independent Democratic members of the present city council. His supporters put up hundreds of lawn signs in his district. He did get over 30% of the vote and he raised important issues and created a new political network for future elections. He handed out a lot of literature about the real issues facing New Haven, CT. He also stood up for what he saw as the best policies for his ward and for city of New Haven, CT. He stood up to Yale university and its corporation's obscene control over New Haven's economy and future. He became a symbol of independence in a city government that has a long and sorry history of corrupt strong mayors. I want to thank Alan Brison and his campaign for fighting the good fight and for pursuing a Green agenda. While it is easy to get discouraged it is important to understand the context in which Alan's campaign was forced to run in this year(something you will not find completely delineated in article below). The inconvenient facts are that people in the Brison campaign have put forward some evidence that Mayor John DeStefano Jr made Allan's defeat a high priority during this election year. Justin Elicker , Alan's opponent is pursuing a double master's degree at Yale School of Forestry. When asked at a debate during the campaign if he had the time to go to school at Yale full time and be a active as a Alderman he said: "I am not a good student" (which elicited approving laughter from his supporters and very little reflection from Yale's "best and brightest"). Mr Elicker says he will finish school in June 2010 which means that for the first 4 to 6 months of his term he will be a very busy full time student and more than likely AWOL from the business of the city of New Haven, CT. On his resume he says that he worked for the U.S. State Department in some capacity before becoming a student and candidate for city council. One Brison supporter said last night that early on in Mr. Elicker's campaign he was introduced as the "mayor's choice" for this city council seat. When this created a negative impression in some voters minds this characterization was dropped. The 200 Yale graduate students and other people connected to Yale who were signed up by Mr Elicker's campaign supported Mr. Elicker because he was Yale Blue (like likes like) and they ignored the bigger issues facing the city that I was born in. Hopefully we can explore and discover some new facts and more solid evidence about what really happened on Nov. 3, 2009 in New Haven's 10th ward. There were quite a few Yale Grad Students and others connected to Yale who actively supported and voted for Allan (I spoke with many of them at their homes), therefore I believe that certain characterizations found in this article and repeated by certain other "experts" is only partially true. Mr Elicker is obviously on the Democratic party career track for higher office. One can only hope that his time as Alderman of New Haven will be more that just another entry on his well heeled resume. I do not see this election as a defeat but rather as an opportunity for learning and growth. Experiences in a context is one way of learning and seeing things as they really are. Reframing is also redefining the obvious and seeing more accurately what is really going on past, present, and future. Disputed Election Obama is considering a military request to send as many as 40,000 more U.S. soldiers to Afghanistan, on top of the 68,000 due to be stationed there by the end of the year. I ran for constable, a government position requiring me to deliver court summonses, to highlight the significance of third parties. The United States is unique from other well-established democracies in that its political system is characterized by the relative absence of third parties. The dialogue in Congress, and consequently the dialogue portrayed in the media, is primarily between two enormous entities: Democrats and Republicans. We?ve been told that the Democrats are the party of the left, and the Republicans are the party of the right?yet a closer, more nuanced observation reveals that there are more similarities than differences between the two. The sort of debate that energizes and powers a truly democratic society does not occur on fundamental issues that the Democrats have continually deemed ?off limits??such as whether the United States has the right to intervene unilaterally across the world to protect its interests, or issues like cutting the military budget, single-payer universal healthcare, cracking down on corporate welfare, and serious labor reform. Because The Green Party does not hesitate to address the issues and highlight the dangers of corporate influence that permeate Democratic and Republican agendas alike, I started working for them a few years ago. The Green platform, in short, is based on social justice and environmentalism. It works towards the goal of peaceful community self-sufficiency in a country increasingly dominated by corporate influence. In my home state of Connecticut, the Green Party does have a small but stable support base?we are, after all, the home state of Ralph Nader. After working with the Greens on the Cliff Thornton for Governor Campaign in 2006, and Richard Duffee?s 4th district congressional campaign in 2008, the Fairfield County Greens apparently trusted me enough to ask me to run for constable in my town of New Canaan. A week ago, I was elected with 749 votes, good enough for fourth place out of six candidates. Almost immediately I thought of the impossibility of serving as constable in Connecticut while I went to college elsewhere. Fortunately, the position of constable?effectively a symbolic office, as outlined in the State Constitution?doesn?t actually require that I serve court summonses or live in the state. But because the position is symbolic, it?s a great opportunity to show New Canaan, a fairly conservative town, that third parties exist. It also gives residents the ability to vote Green in a town better known as a source of inspiration for the Stepford Wives, for its small minority population of less than five percent, and its ostentatious mini-mansions. Before I degrade my constituency too much, I must say that I?m proud of my town for electing Green Party officials. And I must value this small victory, because the disappointing reality is that the Green Party has had an extremely limited amount of success in both Connecticut and the nation as a whole. Richard Duffee?the bearded, eccentric and incredibly opinionated former lawyer, professor and self-employed poet for whom I campaigned for Congress?ended up with an embarrassing 1,373 votes in the congressional race, a number notably less than those for Michael Carrano, the borderline-delusional Libertarian candidate who espoused a classical Greek Sophist philosophy and consequently decided not to campaign at all. The lack of success for third parties is due to the fact that quite simply, the entire electoral and political system is stacked against them. The Electoral College is a winner take-all system, in which the margin of victory has no bearing whatsoever on representation. In such a plurality voting system, runners-up do not get representation. Therefore, third parties need to focus an immense number of resources in order to actually elect a candidate. Perhaps even more obstructive to third party success is the repressive ballot access laws which vary from state to state. In this case, the complicity of the Democrats and Republicans is astonishing?whether the outsiders are Greens, Libertarians or independents, the two major parties have a longstanding agreement to combat the possibility of having more than two parties compete for a seat. Third parties are often obligated to launch tedious petition campaigns to obtain a certain amount of signatures before qualifying for ballot access. Many times, the signature total is virtually impossible to reach. But if I didn?t have hope that this situation could change, then I wouldn?t have run for constable in the first place. The United States has a rich tradition of third parties as the vanguard for change, from the Populists to Progressives and Socialists. The uphill battle is well summarized by the journalist I.F. Stone: ?In order for somebody to win an important, major fight 100 years hence, a lot of other people have got to be willing?for the sheer fun and joy of it?to go right ahead and fight, knowing you?re going to lose. You mustn?t feel like a martyr. By Molly Shaker Cole Stangler turned 19-years-old on Oct. 4. On Nov. 3 he became an elected official. The Georgetown University freshman hasn't decided what he's going to major in yet, but he's now one of New Canaan's six constables elected to serve papers, including subpoenas and summonses, like old town sheriffs used to do. In an uncontested race, Stangler was the top vote-getter of the three Green Party candidates, garnering 749 votes to 627 for 67-year-old incumbent Hector Lopez and 666 for his daughter Estela Lopez, a 2003 New Canaan High School graduate. Voters could choose four out of the six names on the ballot. Republicans John Ponterotto and Austin Furst, Jr. got 2,349 and 2,403 votes respectively; Democrat Ed Vollmer got 1,680. In 2006, at the ripe age of 16, Stangler worked on Green Party member Cliff Thornton?s campaign for Connecticut governor. Cole?s mother, Barbara Stangler, said that her son became very active in the campaign and even organized an event at his private high school, Brunswick School in Greenwich, that attracted about 500 people, which was, at the time, Thornton?s largest audience. ?[Thornton] spoke at Brunswick, mainly about marijuana,? Stangler said. ?The headmaster got fairly pissed off about that.? Stangler said he was asked by the Green Party to run for constable in June, the same month he graduated from high school. Now that he's studying at Georgetown, the 300-mile commute between New Canaan and Washington, D.C. could make it difficult to fulfill his duties. Fortunately, constables are able to decide for themselves just how much or how little they are able to accomplish as an elected official. ?We have had constables who, I believe, have never served papers,? Claudia Weber, Town Clerk, said. ?We had a constable who lived in Germany. Out of all the offices, constable is the one where, if you choose to, you don?t have to invest a lot of time into the position.? Weber added that, in a town with an active police force, like New Canaan, the responsibilities of a constable may be fulfilled by the police force. ?[Constable] is one of these positions that the state of Connecticut holds onto even though it really has no useful purpose,? Mike DeRosa, co-chair of the Connecticut Green Party, said. ?It?s sort of like pet rocks: there?s a subjective meaning to something that has no specific meaning. While Stangler admits that he didn?t campaign very seriously, he and a friend walked around Waveny Park during the annual Family Fourth celebration and tried to shake hands with as many people as possible. ?Many people didn?t want to talk to me. They thought I was delusional,? he said, who also added that he was wearing a straw cowboy hat donning an American flag. ?I?d say I shook about 15 to 20 people?s hands. That was basically my only true campaigning, (besides) word of mouth and telling my friends and what not.? Stangler's July 4th campaigning efforts were followed by the Green Party?s Independence Day celebration on the steps of the Ferguson Library in Stamford where he joined members in playing music like Bruce Springsteen and the Grateful Dead while 2008 Green Party candidate for Congress Richard Duffee (who Stangler also campaigned for in 2008) read the Declaration of Independence out loud. The event was on November 13 and turned out to be much more important than anyone had expected. The trip was hosted by the Columbia River Fellowship for Peace. Hood River is a relatively small community in a beautiful part of the state about an hour west of Portland. Surrounded by mountains the area has attracted high-tech types over the years who love to windsurf along the Columbia River. One such group of technologists created a corporation called Insitu that makes drones and was recently bought out by Boeing. Insitu has grown so much in recent years, as demand for drones in Iraq-Afghanistan-Pakistan has increased, that the company now is operating out of many different buildings in small towns on both sides of the river that separates Oregon and Washington. Recently activists discovered an Insitu plan to build a central production facility that the company says will employ 700 people. The local media, politicians, and supporters of America's current wars applaud the proposal but local peace activists have been organizing a campaign in the community to force debate about drones. I was invited to come speak to help spread consciousness about Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV's) in the community. After a frustration marked series of flights that led me to Newark and Houston, I finally made it to Oregon in time to do the talk. Local organizer Linda Short picked me up at the Portland airport and showed me a column from one of the local papers that was talking about the planned community event. Not only did the columnist call drones a "clean" way of fighting war but he also gave the wrong date for the meeting, something I am told his paper had done before. Fortunately though the peace group had purchased three full-page advertisements in different local papers to promote the event. Linda told me she hoped 50 people would turn out. She also told me that a local activist had come forward to cover the expense of the three advertisements. As it turned out 160 people packed the small church sanctuary where we met in Hood River. Included in the audience was the columnist who had given the wrong date for the meeting and the man who had founded Insitu but has since sold his shares in the company for a reported sum of $20 million. I centered by talk around the large group of letters-to-the-editor that Linda had supplied me in advance of my trip. I was impressed by the positive non-violent conflict they had created in the community around the drones issue and began my talk by telling them that Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. had said that real change could only come by creating such positive social tension in our communities. I took many excerpts from the letters and used them to make my key points: drone killings may be violating international law against summary executions; drone attacks have killed 700 innocent civilians in Pakistan since late 2008; we are making more enemies out of drone victims families; surveillance UAV's could be used against us back here in the US as our civil liberties are destroyed; building drones waste tax dollars that should be going toward dealing with our real problem which is climate change; military production is the worst way to create jobs in our declining economy; and what does military production for endless war say about the soul of our nation. I suggested though there was one vital issue that I did not find covered in the letters. It was the reality that our present war policy in Afghanistan-Pakistan was really driven by the desire of the oil lobby to control these two countries so that pipelines could carry Caspian Sea oil and natural gas to ports in the Arabian Sea rather than extending pipelines through Russia and China. This was all part of the larger US military program of controlling resource extraction at a time of declining supplies of fossil fuels. For evidence I quoted extensively from Zbigniew Brzezinski's book, The Grand Chessboard: American Primacy And It's Geostrategic Imperatives, written in 1998. In the book Brzezinski says, "The world's energy consumption is bound to vastly increase over the next two or three decades. Estimates by the U.S. Department of Energy anticipate that world demand will rise by more than 50 percent between 1993 and 2015, with the most significant increase in consumption occurring in the Far East. The momentum of Asia's economic development is already generating massive pressures for the exploration and exploitation of new sources of energy and the Central Asian region and the Caspian Sea basin are known to contain reserves of natural gas and oil that dwarf those of Kuwait, the Gulf of Mexico, or the North Sea....any successful American policy must focus on Eurasia as a whole and be guided by a Geostrategic design. "That puts a premium on maneuver and manipulation in order to prevent the emergence of a hostile coalition that could eventually seek to challenge America's primacy. "The most immediate task is to make certain that no state or combination of states gains the capacity to expel the United States from Eurasia or even to diminish significantly its decisive arbitration role. "Moreover, as America becomes an increasingly multi-cultural society, it may find it more difficult to fashion a consensus on foreign policy issues, except in the circumstance of a truly massive and widely perceived direct external threat." There were many great comments from the audience following my talk. The man who founded Insitu tried to filibuster the meeting by saying that I had made many misleading and wrong statements and he was prepared to talk extensively about the drones made by the company and their civilian uses. After a bit I asked him if it was true that the Insitu made UAV's were being used in US wars in the Middle East and Central Asia. Yes, he replied, it was true. At the end of my talk I suggested that it was quite apparent that many people in the region had deep concerns about drones and I recommended they might explore holding some town hall meetings so the public could be heard. I also suggested that the time had come for citizens to do more than vote, that we needed the public to become involved in democratizing production decision making so that we could begin to stop the colonization of our nation by the military industrial complex. The next morning I woke up early for a 5:00 am ride to the Portland airport. I was driven by a local activist, and veteran, by the name of Rollean. Rollean had been the one to put the money up for the three full-page ads in the local papers. He is not a wealthy man, he is a carpenter who lives quite simply, but felt so strongly about the drones that he had to do something to help build momentum around the issue. It was quite apparent that the advertisements had in fact done just that. As it turned out Rollean told me he remembered me from years ago in Florida. He had come to Florida in 1987 when I organized the historic protest at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station at the time of the first flight test of the Trident II nuclear missile from the space center. Just prior to the big rally, attended by well over 5,000 people, we held a Florida Peace Pilgrimage that began at the Trident nuclear submarine base in St. Mary's, Georgia. The peace walk attracted people like Rollean who had already walked across the US in the Great Peace March and then came south for our walk. As the peace pilgrimage moved southward toward Cape Canaveral, with about 200 walkers, many of them began sneaking into the huge swampy nature preserve that surrounds the space center in a non-violent attempt to get near the Trident launch pad in order to stop the missile test. Each day for about a week activists were arrested by space center security. Then on the day of the big demonstration at the front gate of Cape Canaveral another 200 folks, led by Dr. Benjamin Spock, climbed the fence in a symbolic attempt to also get on the launch pad. The Brevard County jails were overflowing after that action and several people refused to give their names and remained in jail for some time. Rollean was one of those who stayed in the jail for 65 days, refusing to give his real name in order to keep the debate alive in the space coast community. It's clear that the drone issue is "taking off" all over the country. There are presently active US military drone operations in at least seven states - and probably many more that we are not aware of. People are having strong moral and ethical reactions to the idea of robotic warfare - what the Space Command says will help "increase the kill chain." The use of UAV's will dramatically surge as the Obama administration is likely to see them as a substitute for adding huge amounts of troops in Afghanistan. The killings of innocent civilians will escalate as will the creation of new enemies. Yes, we need more jobs in America but we don't need to get them from making killer drones. Instead the peace movement needs to be calling for the conversion of the military industrial complex. According to a recent UMASS-Amherst Economics Department study we get 8,555 jobs by building weapons like drones for every $1 billion spent by the Pentagon. But the study says, we would get 19,795 jobs for the same $1 billion if we built mass transit systems. Drones won't help us solve for climate change. Mass transit could. Suddenly everyone has discovered Dodd hasn?t really done that much and he?s a corporate Democrat. For years he has gotten a free pass. No more. Maybe. If former U.S. Reps. Chris Shays or Nancy Johnson had been as tight with the interests they were supposed to regulate in Congress, it would have been a minor scandal. But Dodd was the friend of Wall Street and of banks when he was he was supposed to be a major watchdog of same in the Senate. And no one minded ? until now. The Glass-Steagall Act of 1933 separated commercial and investment banking. Guess who engineered its repeal? Dodd?s explanation for that foul deed, now that the entire banking system has collapsed, is that he didn?t mean to. Officially, Dodd blames the regulators. But they did not repeal the regulation. He did. Dodd?s poll numbers reflect not only the financial crisis, but his own bad faith. Dodd always has said what he says now. He believes in regulation. But he did the opposite of what he said he believed. His bipolarity has caught up with him. People will stomach a zealot or a fool. But not a phony. Will this be enough to unseat Dodd after all these years? Who can do it At least three Republicans, so far, think so. But for a Republican to beat Dodd in 2010 in this state is an uphill slog, even if Dodd gets another pal to buy him another house in another foreign land. (There is none lovelier than Ireland.) How about a fellow Democrat? Dodd would seem ripe for a Democratic primary challenge. The problem: There?s the lack of Democrats in this state with a certain kind of fortitude. But there is one once and perhaps future Democrat who has the knowledge and the courage, and could give this state a hell of a race in 2010. His name is Ralph Nader. There is no one in this nation who is more anti-corporate, who knows more about antitrust and regulatory dismantling, and surer of his own mind and quicker on his feet. And he is a Connecticut voter; has been all his life. So come back to Connecticut, Ralph. Be the Upton Sinclair of our day. Put the premier issue of the day before the state and the nation. Who owns the country? Who makes the rules? What is the public?s money for? Nader can run against the two parties acting as mere shills for special interests. The letter should list arguments for & advantages of running Green. Ralph should be challenged on his preference, since 2004, for running as an independent. An independent campaign does nothing to interfere with two-party rule. John Anderson's independent campaign in 1980 had no effect on the two-party status quo. Even a victory has only a limited effect. Bernie Sanders casts lots of correct votes in the US Senate, but the fact that he's an independent doesn't undermine the dominance of the Dems & Repubs. On the other hand, a Green elected to Congress would help establish the GP as a permanent noncorporate alternative party, in Connecticut & throughout the US. His leadership would open the door for other Green victories in congressional & other races, proving that Greens have the power to win. The effect of Ralph's run would be felt for decades. Ralph has objections to running as a Green that should be addressed. Some of his objections are personal (solipsistic, in my opinion) and have to do with his own preferences. But he also has some complaints against the GP that can be discussed. One of his complaints is that Greens are squeamish about raising money. The Conn. GP might pledge to raise a certain amount (collecting the names of people vowing to contribute) to be used for the Nader campaign if he decides to run as a Green. If he doesn't run as a Green, he doesn't get the money. The Connecticut race, if Ralph decides to compete, can either be about building a permanent party in Conn. & the US that rejects corporate money & influence, or it can be about Ralph Nader's political career. If Ralph runs as an independent and Greens support his campaign, the GP will remain eclipsed. If he wins as an independent, the message will be that the GP is irrelevant. We need to have the confidence in the GP's potential as a growing party to demand that a candidate who seeks our support run on a Green ballot line. If we don't have that confidence, we should fold up our tents & disappear into the night. Ralph himself has in the past complained that Greens don't have enough faith in their own party, one of the reasons he ran for the White House as an independent in 2004 & 2008. Let's prove him wrong this time. Hladky The idea of Connecticut's Ralph Nader running for a U.S. Senate seat in his home state next year seems to be gaining traction, at least with the Connecticut Green Party. It's not a prospect that is likely to bring smiles to the faces of Democratic incumbent Chris Dodd or his fans, but it might make some Connecticut Republicans go all warm and cuddly. As one long-time GOP insider commented: "It wouldn't be the first time Ralph helped elect a Republican." Green Party spokesman Tim McKee isn't at all worried about Nader acting as a spoiler in 2010. "Right now we're feeling this is a lost seat," McKee said. He said Connecticut polls show that voters in this state "are just sick of Dodd" and that those same surveys show two GOP candidates ahead of the incumbent. "We are serious about Nader running to win," McKee said, adding he believes Nader can easily raise the $3-5 million he would need for a legitimate U.S. Senate campaign in Connecticut. McKee said many voters probably thought having Nader as a president was "kind of far out, but they can see him as a U.S. senator." The possibility of a Nader run for Dodd's seat was first suggested last April in an editorial in Manchester's Journal-Inquirer. The concept resurfaced last week on a couple of Internet news websites and it's set the blogosphere abuzz. McKee said his group has seen "hundreds of responses urging him to run." "With Dodd losing in many polls to the Republicans who have announced, we think Nader could be a clear choice to many who have lost faith in Dodd and and his scandals with the banking and financial industries," McKee said. "Nader is America's Public Citizen Number 1!" said Mike DeRosa, a co-chairman of the state's Green Party. "We just want to know when to start gathering signatures for the petitions." Some people are still blaming Nader's 2000 presidential run for costing Democrat Al Gore the election. (What most Nader-blamers fail to remember is that Gore lost his home state of Tennessee to George W. Bush in that election. Had Gore won his home state, he would have easily won the election regardless of the votes Nader got.) Nader, 75, apparently hasn't ruled out the possibility of a run. He's currently on a book tour to promote his book, "Only the Super-Rich Can Save Us." McKee said Nader, a Winsted native, is scheduled to appear at the West Hartford Library the day after Thanksgiving and Green Party officials plan to be there to urge him to get in the race. Dodd's poll numbers have been abysmal. He's being challenged within his own party by political newcomer Merrick Alpert, and by several Republicans, including former U.S. Rep. Noting that the Fourth Fleet's flagship will be a new nuclear aircraft carrier, which will be based at a $500 million docking facility, soon to be built at the Mayport naval base in Jacksonville, Florida, Canney said. Prior to the coup, the Zelaya administration was planning to convert a major Honduran military air base into a civilian airport, with funding from ALBA, a banking and trade alliance for Latin America and the Caribbean initiated by Venezuela and Cuba in 2004 as an alternative to the FTAA. Current members of the alliance include Nicaragua, Bolivia and Ecuador. Honduras joined ALBA in October 2008. The Soto Cano air base (aka Palmerola) was built up by the US in the 1980's as part of the contra war against Nicaragua, and is home to "Joint Task Force Bravo". The Obama administration has declined to name the change of leadership in the sovereign nation of Honduras as the "coup-d'etat" the world recognizes it as. When all other countries recalled their ambassadors, the U.S. Government maintained its embassy and the recognition of the illegitimate coup leaders as speaking for the people of Honduras. Chris Dodd's political vulnerability, the Connecticut Green Party is attempting to persuade its famous native son, Ralph Nader, to jump into the hotly contested 2010 Senate race. Dodd's poll numbers give the Greens one of their best opportunities to win a U.S. Senate seat, said Tim McKee, a state party spokesman. And this time, McKee maintains, Nader wouldn't be a spoiler -- something he was accused of in the 2000 presidential election. "A lot of Democrats would be upset about the prospect (of Nader entering the race). But we look at it as (he's) already lost the seat," said McKee, who believes Dodd won't be able to resurrect the popularity he's enjoyed over the years. A Quinnipiac University Poll released Nov. 12 showed 54 percent of voters disapprove of the job that Dodd is doing, up from 49 percent in September. The same survey showed the five-term incumbent Democrat particularly vulnerable among unaffiliated voters, the largest voting bloc in this otherwise Democratic-leaning state. Talk of Nader possibly entering the Senate race has heated up on the Internet in recent weeks. The Connecticut Green Party is stepping up its efforts to encourage Nader to run and has planned a rally for Friday afternoon outside the Noah Webster Library in West Hartford, where Nader is scheduled to speak at a book-signing. The 75-year-old activist and lawyer, who divides his time between Winsted, Conn. and Washington, D.C., released a new book in September titled "Only the Super-Rich Can Save Us!" and is currently on a national book tour. Nader is registered to vote in Connecticut. "This is not about his ego or anything else. It's not really a draft effort. It's an effort to show him there is a lot of, a lot of support," said McKee, who is working with other party members to build a team of 100 grass roots volunteers for Nader. As of the end of October, there were 1,824 voters in Connecticut registered as Green Party members, according to the Secretary of the State's Office. Nader has not said whether he's willing to be a candidate. Several messages were left seeking comment through his publisher and Washington office. Dodd's campaign and the Connecticut Democrats both declined to comment on the prospect of Nader getting into the Senate race. "I'm just absorbing a lot of the feedback before I make a decision," said Nader, who appeared at the Noah Webster Library in West Hartford, where he was signing his new book, "Only the Super-Rich Can Save Us!" More than 100 people turned out to hear Nader talk about his book, including some Green Party members who held signs that read, "Run Ralph Run!" The state's Green Party has been stepping up efforts to encourage Nader to get into the race, saying this marks one of the best opportunities for the Greens to win a U.S. Senate seat. Some Democrats accused Nader of being a spoiler in the 2000 presidential election when he ran as the Green Party's candidate and got 2.7 percent of the vote. Republican George W. Bush won the electoral vote that year, defeating the Democrat, former Vice President Al Gore. This time around, supporters look to 75-year-old Nader as the person who can reform government and hold the banking industry accountable. Dodd has come under criticism for his role in the national financial crisis as chairman of the Senate Banking Committee. A recent Quinnipiac University Poll showed 54 percent of voters disapprove of the job that he's been doing in Washington. Nader said he wants to determine whether voters are truly dissatisfied with Dodd and whether there are enough willing to work throughout Connecticut's 169 towns "for a new breed of political representation in Washington." "It really depends on what kind of momentum there is and how many people are willing to roll up their sleeves because I'm very accustomed to people saying 'run Ralph run' and then they drift away, predisposed and preoccupied with their daily life," he told reporters. "It has to be bottom up." Nader said Dodd is "very personable" and shouldn't be written off. He also warned against speculation that Connecticut's senior senator might be urged by national Democrats not to run for re-election. But he said Dodd "has been very concessionary to the banks and the brokerage houses for years." Dodd's campaign and the state Democrats have declined to comment on a possible Nader candidacy. When Vic Lancia of Portland made it to the front of the line Friday so Nader could sign his book, he told his hero that he would be willing to help out with a Senate campaign. "I'm retired, Ralph. I've got good legs to go to work for you," Lancia told Nader, who just nodded and smiled. "Give me something to do next year Ralph." Tim McKee, a spokesman for the Connecticut Green Party, said the party is committed to proving to Nader there will be support, both volunteers and financial contributors. He said he's pleased to see that people not associated with the party already have begun Internet pages on social networking sites, such as Facebook, urging Nader to run. "We're getting responses all across the nation. It's on all the blogs and stuff," McKee said. "They want him to run to win. That's the most important thing.
