Greetings,
I am not sure if this is a 'world first' but a Green candidate has just been elected as the Mayor of the capital city in New Zealand.
While Celia Wade-Brown stood as an Independent, she is a Green Party member and has been a very visible city councillor for many years, elected on a Green ticket.
You can read more about her here http://www.celiaformayor.org.nz
The election was held using the Single Transferable Vote system.
On election night, the right-wing incumbent was 40 votes ahead. After the Special Votes were counted, Celia won by 176 votes.
Phew.
Her opponent had been Mayor for 9 years and had a majority of 11,000 votes in the previous election.
