*Suncor Opens Conversation about 'Stranded Assets' in Alberta’s
Oilsands*
<http://www.desmog.ca/2016/08/02/suncor-opens-conversation-about-stranded-assets-alberta-s-oilsands>
Suncor Energy CEO Steve Williams*rocked the oil industry boat when he
announced a plan to leave some of the company's oilsands reserves
unrecovered* during a conference call with investors....Williams said
the company is working to develop a plan with Alberta to "strand" its
least economical reserves, a proposal that appears to align with the
call of environmentalists to *leave the high-cost and high-carbon fossil
fuels in the ground to prevent catastrophic global warming*..."We are
advocating in a modest way to work with government*so that we can strand
some of the oil in the oilsands*," Williams said, as reported by The
Canadian Press

*Climate*summaries 'for grownups,' but not too difficult for

...examined the writing and editing procedures by which the
Intergovernmental Panel on*Climate Change*createscreates summaries of
their findings for policymakers*.*...* we found that IPCC reports are
designed for grownups, but *they are not harder to read than other
science documents, including those written for the public by
professional writers,"*... also suggest the possibility of getting
professional science editors to participate in the review process to
help keep the writing as accessible as possible without losing meaning.

*Former Bush adviser: Climate change threatens national security
<http://www.politico.com/story/2016/08/stephen-hadley-climate-change-national-security-226678>*
Politico Tyler Pager *Climate change will be one of the top national
security issues for the next administration,* a former national security
adviser to President George W. Bush said Thursday...Stephen Hadley, who
served both as deputy and top adviser through Bush's administration from
2001 to 2009, said climate change has resulted in massive refugee flows
that have threatened European unity..."Climate change and a lot of other
economic dislocations have put a lot of people out of work, they are on
the move and they have no place to go and*it means they are recruiting
grounds for terrorists and extremists* and potential refugee flows that
will tax Europe even more."

Icebergs in Jakobshavn fjord, Ilulissat, Greenland. 'Even if emissions
from human activities are cut, those from melting ice sheets will
increase while the darker surfaces exposed will absorb more heat,'
writes Iain Climie....."..people are not reminded of the urgency of
their responsibilities, perhaps because *the media feel that their
audience will become saturated and resistant if too much emphasis is
placed on these issues.* Meanwhile, the world seems to be en route to a
terrifying climatic future, and our grandchildren will surely be
justified in saying: *"Why didn’t you do something before it was too
late?".*..universities...need to take up... intelligent public education
about our problems and what to do about them. Promoting public awareness
of the vital need to do much more to *halt climate change, by means of
discussion and debate, ought to be a basic activity of universities*. At
present it is not... George Monbiot is right to*berate the media
industry for granting the transport, farming, gas, oil and coal
industries "a social licence to operate"*

*Global warming****could release radioactive waste* stored in an
abandoned Cold War-era U.S. military camp deep under Greenland's ice
caps if a thaw continues to spread in coming decades, scientists said on
Friday.
The military abandoned the ice-tunnel complex with tons of chemicals and
radioactive materials
<http://www.scientificamerican.com/article/greenland-ice-melt-could-expose-hazardous-cold-war-waste/>
Scientific American When the U.S. military abandoned Camp Century, a
complex of tunnels dug into the ice of northwest Greenland, in the
mid-1960s, they left behind thousands of tons of waste, including
hazardous radioactive and chemical materials. *They expected the
detritus would be safely entombed in the ice sheet for tens of thousands
of years*, buried ever deeper under accumulating layers of snow and
ice... that *material could be exposed much, much sooner—possibly even
by the end of this century*
