This new visualization from NASA shows how carbon dioxide dances in
    the atmosphere....
The heat-trapping gas appears as winds of red, blue and yellow
whisking around the planet. Each color corresponds to a different
concentration of carbon dioxide, with red representing the highest
levels and blue the lowest. The simulation, which was released on
Tuesday, reveals the invisible drivers of climate change in three
    dimensions...
The simulation, which was released on Tuesday, reveals the invisible
drivers of*climate change*in three dimensions. A large amount of
carbon dioxide in the atmosphere comes from burning fossil fuels,
    and its concentration ...
In the simulation, the greenhouse gas changes to yellow and then
blue. But not all of the carbon dioxide gets sucked up, and the
leftovers continue to contribute to global warming.

*(video) Rally to Stand Up for Science
<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=duVW_qI3Wj4>*

(38 min) Scientists Stand Up to Ignorance, Hatred, in rare Rally at
the AGU in San Francisco December 2016.
Climate change is a crisis. Let's treat it like one. Let's mobilize!
    http://TheClimateMobilization.org..
Science is under attack. We face an Administration that proposes to
gut science funding, pull out of the Paris Climate Agreement,
appoint a climate denier to head the EPA, and derail the Clean Power
Plan. And that’s just the beginning. Real people and communities
bear the brunt of these actions...
The American Geophysical Union's upcoming conference
http://fallmeeting.agu.org/2016/ is the first major convening of
climate scientists since the election. The annual conference, which
brings 26,000 scientists together, offers a global stage for
scientists, allies, and impacted communities to stand together and
send a message in this pivotal moment: we must Stand Up for Science...
Join dozens of Earth and climate scientists, Indigenous leaders, and
representatives from communities that are speaking out. Together,
    we’re affirming that:
    - Climate change is a real, human-caused, and urgent threat.
    - We must uphold the United States' commitment to the Paris Climate
    Agreement.
    - We must protect scientific integrity in policymaking.
    - We must protect government scientists from censorship or suppression.
    - We must reduce carbon pollution and U.S. dependence on fossil fuels.
    - We can make the U.S. a clean energy leader, and champion the just
transition to a new energy era that works for all of us....
This isn't just about climate science -- its about freedom of
inquiry. It's about the future of evidence-based policy. It's about
the disproportionate impacts on communities of color and low-income
    communities. And it's about solidarity.

$1.5 billion plan to remake the Balsams in the White Mountains
The strategy: ‘I’m going to be the only game in town’...
Ski-resort executives tend to hate climate change, for obvious
    reasons. Then there’s Les Otten...
It’s not that he’s a fan, just that he’s looking to turn the
global-warming equation on its head. How so? By carving out slopes
in a remote spot in northern New Hampshire that’s frigid enough to
out-snowpack rivals. While lower-elevation areas wilt, the lifts on
higher ground will keep on humming....
The go-north strategy is like a nor’easter that drops snow twice: It
protects your investment and gives you a leg up on competitors. Vail
Resorts Inc. has embraced the concept, announcing a deal in August
to buy Whistler Blackcomb in British Columbia,...

*Study: News Reports Uncritically Portray Exxon CEO Rex Tillerson As
Climate Change Advocate
<http://mediamatters.org/research/2016/12/16/news-reports-uncritically-portray-exxon-ceo-rex-tillerson-climate-change-advocate/214848>*

Several media outlets reporting on President-elect Donald Trump’s
selection of Rex Tillerson as secretary of state have uncritically
described Tillerson as accepting of climate change and supportive of
a carbon tax. But these reports ignored scientifically inaccurate
claims Tillerson has made about climate change, Exxon’s continued
financial support of groups that deny climate science,
inconsistencies by both Tillerson and Exxon on whether they truly
support a carbon tax, and fierce opposition to Tillerson’s
nomination from leading environmental groups -- not to mention the
fact that Exxon is under investigation in several states for
possibly violating state laws by deceiving shareholders and the
    public about climate change.
Reports Uncritically Described Tillerson As Accepting Of Climate
Science And/Or Supportive Of A Carbon Tax....
Shortly before and after Trump selected Tillerson as his nominee for
secretary of state, several major TV and print outlets uncritically
reported that Tillerson accepts climate science and/or supports a

“If the Trump administration does not live up to its Paris
commitments in whatever way – by increasing emissions, looking for
oil or failing to support the Green Climate Fund – it must be called

“It’s just not acceptable: countries came to an agreement in Paris.
The situation of the world could be grossly worsened – the window to

Dumb policy would be to fire up the smokestacks, stop collecting all
that annoying climate data and marginalize federal employees who
best understand global warming. This is the direction Trump appears
    to be headed...
The president-elect threatens to make the United States a
second-rate player in the coming clean-energy economy. I guess
that’s his idea of greatness, but it’s not mine...
The incoming Trump administration will face passionate and hostile
resistance if it tries to deny the reality of human-induced climate
change. We can already hear the drums of war.

City would be first major taxpayer client to take its business
elsewhere in support of Sioux protesters.
Seattle’s political leaders are looking to shake free of Wells Fargo
in protest of the bank’s financing of the Dakota Access Pipeline
project that threatens to foul the water supply and sacred lands of
    North Dakota’s Standing Rock Sioux...
The city will be stuck with the megabank for at least another year.
But under legislation introduced Monday by Councilwoman Kshama
Sawant, it would take its business elsewhere once Wells Fargo’s
current contract to manage $3 billion in city funds expires next
    December...
Wells Fargo ... is directly lending ... project loans for the
pipeline. Citibank has chipped in another $527 million, according to

The maddening, uncertain reality of*sea-level rise*
    <http://www.vox.com/energy-and-environment/2016/12/16/13971720/sea-level-rise-uncertainty-climate>

Vox -‎9 hours ago‎

By far one of the most important impacts of*global warming*in the
coming decades will be*sea-level rise*. ... That means,
as*climate*scientists Michael Oppenheimer and Richard Alley explain
in a new paper in Science, that coastal areas will have to*..
...a disturbing asterisk here: We still don’t know exactly how high
oceans will rise this century. Studies have suggested it could be
anywhere from 2 to 6 feet, on average — with newer evidence leaning
toward the higher end, depending on how quickly parts of the massive
ice sheet in West Antarctica disintegrate. Worse, climate scientists
probably won’t be able to pin down an exact number anytime soon,
because getting a handle on ice-sheet dynamics is inherently tricky....
There are three main ways that coastal areas can respond. First,
they can build dikes, sand dunes, or other defenses to fend off the
rising oceans. Second, they can elevate some of their coastal
infrastructure (like roads). Third, they can retreat inland,
abandoning some areas to the sea...
*(Right now, the IPCC only comes out every six to seven years, which
is too infrequent to be useful. The UN panel could possibly issue
special reports that come out every year or two — so that local
planners don’t have to sift through every new study on Antarctica
and try to figure out what to expect.)

*How high will the seas rise?
<http://science.sciencemag.org/content/354/6318/1375.full>*** ($)

    Summary
Recent estimates suggest that global mean sea level rise could
exceed 2 m by 2100. These projections are higher than previous ones
and are based on the latest understanding of how the Antarctic Ice
Sheet has behaved in the past and how sensitive it is to future
climate change. They pose a challenge for scientists and
policy-makers alike, requiring far-reaching decisions about coastal
policies to be made based on rapidly evolving projections with
large, persistent uncertainties. An effective approach to managing
coastal risk should couple research priorities to policy needs,
enabling judicious decision-making while focusing research on key
    questions. $ http://science.sciencemag.org/content/354/6318/1375.full

    San Francisco—Despite President-elect Donald Trump's distaste for
the Paris*climate*agreement, countries around the world are already
working to ensure that the global temperature rise stays below 2
    degrees Celsius....
Prominent scientists say researchers and policy makers need to focus
more on adapting to warming and on controversial geoengineering
    techniques to limit it...
One of the primary goals of the Paris accord is mitigation—cutting
    or preventing greenhouse gas emissions....
Nations will also have to focus on adaptation, however—helping
communities cope with the effects of climate change, such as
    flooding and drought....
...the scientific community has to pay more serious attention to
geoengineering, which is the man-made manipulation of Earth’s
natural processes to control the climate....

Injecting aerosols into the atmosphere to fight climate change would
also make it hard for much of the world to see stars in the night
    sky....
Reflective*aerosols*scatter sunlight trying to reach the Earth,
cooling the atmosphere. Scientists believe that the right aerosol,
in the right quantities, distributed into the right place in the
    stratosphere could cool the planet...
...a computer model — called NiteLite — that simulates the amount of
light in the sky as seen from Earth's surface. Surprisingly,
increasing the reflective aerosols in the stratosphere made the sky
    brighter at night....
The aerosols wouldn't only reflect sunlight away from the Earth,
they would reflect and scatter the light we create on the ground —
    brightening the night.

**December 17, 2013: In a RollingStone.com piece also printed in the
December 19, 2013 edition of the magazine, Bill McKibben observes
that President Obama's climate commitment is compromised:
"If you want to understand how people will remember the Obama
climate legacy, a few facts tell the tale: By the time Obama leaves
office, the U.S. will pass Saudi Arabia as the planet's biggest oil
producer and Russia as the world's biggest producer of oil and gas
combined. In the same years, even as we've begun to burn less coal
at home, our coal exports have climbed to record highs. We are,
despite slight declines in our domestic emissions, a global-warming
machine: At the moment when physics tell us we should be jamming on
the carbon brakes, America is revving the engine."
