The 2016 wildfire season has barely begun and dozens of large wildfires
have already raged through Western states, with hundreds of thousands of
acres burned. This comes on the heels of a 2015 wildfire season that was
the worst on record in the U.S., with more than 10 million acres burned.

The bill aims to end the downward spiral of “fire-borrowing,” in which
federal agencies run out of fire suppression funds and then start using
money that could have been used to proactively
mitigate*wildfire*damage.*..*. the Department of Agriculture, told the
committee that the draft legislation ignores a “far more debilitating”
problem than fire-borrowing...The bill would set the federal fire
suppression budget at the average cost of firefighting over the last 10
years, which Bonnie said would lead to a steadily increasing portion of
the Forest Service’s budget. In that case, the available emergency funds
won’t be of much use if the initial fire suppression budget keeps rising.

Here at the Energy and Environment blog, we cover, regularly, the
tipping points of*climate change*- how, for instance, the glaciers of
West Antarctica may already have passed a key threshold that leads to
unstoppable melt..the glaciers of West Antarctica may already have
passed a key threshold that leads to unstoppable melt....The Paris
agreement, if implemented successfully with its targets respected — and
especially the lower boundary, 1.5 degrees C — gives hope of keeping us
from exceeding tipping points that would erase the key climatic
parameters that sustained our very development.

But when it comes to coping with*climate change*, the largest federal
agency—the Pentagon—has taken a spot in the vanguard...Republicans say
the directive is a distraction from the real threats the Pentagon should
be focused on, particularly terrorist groups in the Middle East. “The
military, the intelligence community [and] the domestic national
security agencies should be focused on ISIS and not on climate change,”
said Rep. Ken Buck (R-Colo.), who sponsored the amendment to block the
funding.

The Guardian-Cook et al. (2013) has remained the most-read paper in
Environmental Research Letters for most of the past 3 years ... Voters
believe that there is no consensus about /global warming/ within the
scientific community. The two key conclusions from the paper were:
1) Depending on exactly how you measure the expert consensus, it’s
somewhere between 90% and 100% that agree humans are responsible for
climate change, with most of our studies finding 97% consensus among
publishing climate scientists. 2) The greater the climate expertise
among those surveyed, the higher the consensus on human-caused global
warming.
