Republican Voters Evenly Split on*Climate Change*, Poll Finds
<https://morningconsult.com/2016/06/28/poll-republicans-evenly-split-climate-change/>
Morning Consult -5 hours ago
Most voters, including about half of Republicans, believe the*climate*is
changing and the federal government should step in to cut greenhouse
gases, according to new polling commissioned by a group of right-leaning
energy-focused organizations..., 68 percent of all respondents said they
want federal government action “to reduce emissions of gases like carbon
dioxide that cause global climate change.”...Among Republicans, 48
percent supported that statement, and 46 percent opposed it. The
percentage of Republicans who want government action on climate change
is much lower than the vast majority of Democrats (86 percent) and about
two-thirds of independents (67 percent) who feel similarly.
*Climate Change*High on Agenda as Obama and Trudeau Meet for Summit
<http://www.nytimes.com/2016/06/28/world/americas/canada-climate-justin-trudeau-obama.html>
New York Times -4 hours ago
The leaders of the United States, Mexico and Canada will announce a
North America-wide climate partnership, syncing their national policies
to cut greenhouse gas emissions. They will pledge a joint goal of
generating 50 percent of North America’s electricity from zero-carbon
sources by 2025, up from 37 percent today... Trudeau is bumping up
against the same opposing forces that stymied Mr. Obama in
Washington....Mr. Trudeau has acknowledged the difficulties. “Climate
change will test our intelligence, our compassion and our will,” he told
the United Nations in April. “But we are equal to that challenge.”
Exxon-Funded Members of Congress Play Key Role in*Climate *Deception
Machine

Common Dreams (press release) -6 hours ago
WASHINGTON - Reaffirming their commitment to*climate*deception,
Exxon-funded Republican members of Congress on the House Committee on
Science, Space, and Technology sent a second round of letters...
demanding full divulgence of communications related to each
organization’s work advocating for climate action and holding Exxon
accountable for its role in sowing public deception around climate
change.... All 13 Republican members ... have directly received money
from Exxon. Chairman Lamar Smith (R-TX), who has a track record of
baselessly attacking climate scientists, has particularly cosy financial
ties with Exxon and its industry peers. Smith has accepted $22,270 in
campaign contributions from Exxon since 1998. Smith has also accepted
donations from other key players of the climate deception machine such
as Koch Industries, Royal Dutch Shell, and Peabody Energy... Currently,
four state attorneys general have launched ongoing investigations to
determine if Exxon committed fraud, the Department of Justice has
referred the case to the criminal branch of the FBI, and pressure
continues to mount across the country for elected officials and
candidates to support investigations into all that Exxon knew.
*Climate*assessment must be relevant and useful to policymakers

recommendations to policymakers' realities should make it easier for
them to incorporate*climate science*into the overall*...*
Make*climate-change*assessments more relevant

Stéphane Hallegatte, Katharine J. Mach and colleagues urge researchers
to gear their studies, and the way they present their results, to the
needs of policymakers...In the*IPCC's*sixth cycle of assessment,
the*climate-science*community needs to supply the right sorts of
information to help decision-makers to construct policies from myriad
mitigation and adaptation options.... Governments, corporations and
communities have many options for minimizing dangerous climate change,
and must choose between conflicting priorities and objectives. For
example, how should governments decarbonize energy while increasing
access to it without resorting to fossil fuels?... Risks and
opportunities from investments in mitigation options need to be
evaluated. For example, expanding biomass energy may reduce (or reverse)
emissions but could also threaten food production and biodiversity.
Renewable energy reduces emissions and provides electricity more cheaply
than that from fossil fuels in many remote locations, where some of the
poorest people live... An awareness of the diversity of options and
their risks is important for making smart policies that allow for
regular revisions in light of new information and feedback....Climate
action and protection will never be the sole priorities for
decision-makers, but they will be integral to the full policy landscape.
Research and assessment can create a powerful foundation for these
interactions, and empower decisions in the years ahead.

*Climate*played a starring role in Shakespeare's plays

(subscription) Shakespeare often used the weather in his works but he
also referred to the*climate*, which was especially dramatic in the late
1590s when cold, rainy weather led to a run of poor harvests and England
was on the brink of disaster....The summer of 420 years ago, in 1596,
was especially wet and wretched with “profound shocking rains and great
floods”. A disastrous harvest that year sent wheat prices rocketing and
led to starvation amongst the poor and mounting disorder, with riots in
London. The same year, conspirators unsuccessfully tried to stir up a
rebellion in Oxfordshire in protest…
