Your state-by-state guide to the climate fallout from Tuesday's election.
*Here Are the Races to Watch if You Care About Global Warming*
<http://www.motherjones.com/environment/2016/11/climate-election-results-guide>
The debate isn't restricted to the top of the ticket; there are a
number of state races that will play a key role in determining US
climate policy, along with a handful of ballot initiatives covering
everything from rooftop solar to a proposed carbon tax. The
situation in each state is unique. Some races—New Hampshire's Senate
contest, for instance—feature two candidates who want to act on
climate change. Others, such as West Virginia's gubernatorial
election, feature two candidates who are champions of the coal
industry. The impacts of climate change also vary from state to
state: Alaska faces wildfires and melting permafrost; Florida is
confronting rising seas; Iowa could be hit with falling corn yields.
And of course, the voters in each state are different, too.
Coloradans overwhelmingly acknowledge that humans are warming the
planet. Their neighbors in Utah: not so much.

Tough choices for the media when*climate science*deniers are elected

A media conference from Queensland senator Malcolm Roberts sparks
debate about how journalists should respond to climate science
deniers...The story is one of Newsweek's most cited not because it
was right, nor because it was a glowing example of great science
journalism, but because it has been used so often by*climate
science*deniers. ..Journalists have a tendency to look for stories
that are out of the ordinary and search out views that are
different. This is exactly what happened in the 1970s....But even
then, most scientists publishing research on the future of the
climate thought it was going to get warmer....Researchers looked at
scientific papers published between 1965 and 1979. Across all the
relevant papers, only seven predicted global cooling. Some 20 papers
took a neutral stance on future temperatures, with 44 predicting
temperatures would rise.*...The Guardian writer George Monbiot has
written that if “humanity fails to prevent climate breakdown” then
much fault should lie at the feet of the media....If journalists
aspire to protect the public, then producing stories that allow
debunked climate science denial talking points to hang in the air
like a bad smell is not going to cut it.....What happens if
journalists fail to give context, fail to expose potential vested
interests or fail to distinguish between genuine expertise and
fringe beliefs?....**The impact is not benign. Instead of protecting
the public interest, we can end up doing harm.*

a particularly novel one. American voters have faced a choice
somewhat like this in every presidential election since 2000,
although the GOP position on climate change has gotten more extreme
over time.....*

Tracking Climate Change Questions In Presidential, Senate, And
Governors' Debates
<http://mediamatters.org/research/2016/09/29/scorecard-tracking-climate-change-questions-presidential-senate-and-governors-debates/213239>*
UPDATE (11/7/16): With all of the debates now completed, the lack of
climate questions is on full display. Less than a quarter of the
debates we examined included questions about climate change, and
most key Senate and governors’ races did not feature a single debate
question on the topic. Read more of our key takeaways from the
debate scorecard here....finalized our scorecard of climate change
questions ..... Less than a quarter of the 55 debates we examined
included questions about climate change, and most key Senate and
governors’ races did not feature a single debate question on the
topic. ...In half of the debates that did have climate questions,
the questions came directly from voters.
*Final Scorecard: Climate Change Absent From Debates In Most Key
Senate And Governors’ Races
<http://mediamatters.org/blog/2016/11/07/final-scorecard-climate-change-absent-debates-most-key-senate-and-governors-races/214360>*
-- Just 12 of the 55 debates held in these key races included
questions about climate change (22 percent). If you exclude the
three presidential debates and the vice-presidential debate, where
the lack of climate questions was well-chronicled, the portion of
debates with climate questions inches up to 24 percent.
-- Broken down by individual race, only eight of the 19 contests
featured at least one debate question about climate change (42
percent). In addition to the presidential campaign, debate
moderators completely ignored climate change in the following races:
Arizona Senate, Indiana Governor, Missouri Senate, Missouri
Governor, Montana Governor, Nevada Senate, New Hampshire Governor,
North Carolina Senate, North Carolina Governor, and West Virginia
Governor. Each of these states face serious climate-related
challenges, some of which I detailed here.
--- Only races in two New England states -- Vermont and New
Hampshire -- featured more than one debate with a climate question.
The Vermont Governor race had four debates with questions about
climate change, and the New Hampshire Senate race had two.
----In six of the 12 debates with climate questions, the climate
questions were asked because voters spoke up and asked them. The
climate change questions generated by voters included a Twitter
question in Wisconsin, two Facebook questions in Vermont, an
audience question in Ohio, a question from the Open Debate Coalition
website in New Hampshire, and a question in Indiana submitted to the
Indiana Debate Commission using an online form.
