Hillary Clinton and Al Gore Bring*Climate Change*Message to the
    Issue's Front Line

Florida's east coast ranks as the most vulnerable region to sea
level rise in the U.S....Former Vice President Al Gore praised
Hillary Clinton’s credentials on climate change at a Florida rally
Tuesday that brought the presidential campaign to front lines of the
fight against global warming in the U.S. and laid out a clear
contrast with Donald Trump’s denial of the science....The speeches
from both Clinton and Gore in Miami delved into the science and
policy of climate change in rare depth and nuance for a presidential
campaign rally. The speakers took time to explain the science behind
phenomena like sea level rise, how climate change affects the spread
of infectious diseases like Zika and how storm surge easily
inundates cities with water during large storms....The next
president—whoever he or she may be—will enter office with a clear
set of challenges on environmental issues. The U.S. has fallen
behind on its commitment to cut greenhouse gas emissions included in
the Paris Agreement and the Clean Power Plan—Obama’s signature
measure to address global warming—remains wrapped up in litigation.
A president Trump would struggle to reinvigorate a coal industry
that has fallen behind due to market forces as he has repeatedly
promised. He would also struggle to dismantle the Paris Agreement as
he has promised after that deal took effect this
    year...https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/clinton-appears-in-florida-with-gore-to-promise-action-on-climate-change/2016/10/11/db8745d4-8fc9-11e6-9c85-ac42097b8cc0_story.html

*Climate*activists shut down 5 oil pipelines in solidarity with
    Dakota Access protests

Wielding little more than wire cutters, wrenches and a willingness
to be arrested, a group of climate activists shut down five oil
pipelines across the United States on Tuesday...As of 10:30 a.m. ET,
the activists said they had cut down wire fences and manually turned
emergency shutdown valves on pipelines in Minnesota, Montana, North
Dakota and Washington. Activists also alerted pipeline operators
before shutting down the lines....The targeted pipelines carry a
particular type of heavy, high-carbon crude oil from Canada's tar
sands region in Alberta....Nine people, including filmmakers, were
arrested and removed from the sites, said Afrin Sopariwala of the
Climate Disobedience Center, which helped organize the protests..She
said activists had turned the pipelines' emergency valves to warn of
the*climate change*"emergency" that threatens to bring rising sea
levels, more extreme and frequent storms, and other effects.

"When we are old, what will we wish we had done? What can we do to
wake the human spirit enough that we might save ourselves?...I've
seen the climate movement build from handfuls of people here and
there, to hundreds and thousands -- and even hundreds of thousands,
in rare moments. I believe that we're poised for a growth far more
explosive: The wave of energy that has recently come into the group
that I'm part of, 350 Seattle, has been extraordinary. We're having
to run with all our might simply to make sure we don't fail new
people by not having meaningful ways for them to engage."
