Nations, Fighting Powerful Refrigerant That Warms Planet, Reach Landmark
Deal
<http://www.nytimes.com/2016/10/15/world/africa/kigali-deal-hfc-air-conditioners.html>*

Big Deal in Kigali, but also another example of an iniquitous
transmission.... "While the Paris pledges are broad, they are also
voluntary, often vague and dependent on the political will of future
world leaders. In contrast, the Kigali deal includes specific
targets and timetables to replace HFCs with more planet-friendly
alternatives, trade sanctions to punish scofflaws, and an agreement
by rich countries to help finance the transition of poor countries
to the costlier replacement products." *Emerging climate accord
could push A/C out of sweltering India’s reach

A phaseout of hydrofluorocarbons could have a major effect on
climate change but would make air-conditioning more expensive just
as many Indians are becoming able to afford it. New York Times

*Greenhouse Gas*Deal a Good Step, But Not Nearly Enough: Scientists
    <http://www.commondreams.org/news/2016/10/16/greenhouse-gas-deal-good-step-not-nearly-enough-scientists>

While leaders in U.S. and EU tout agreement signed by nearly 200
countries to limit HFCs, scientists warn the deal won't limit global
warming as much as politicians are promising...An international
agreement to limit hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) is a significant step
forward in the effort to slow*global warming*, several
leading*climate*scientists say, but it will fall far short of
politicians' lofty promises. Government leaders have*touted the deal
as a method to reduce global temperatures by as much as 0.5° Celsius
by 2100, citing research that showed the emission from air
conditioners trapped thousands of times more heat in the atmosphere
than carbon dioxide...."Agreeing a deal to phase down the use of
HFCs is the single most important step we can take to limit the
warming of the planet," U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said
Thursday from Kigali, Rwanda, where the deal was reached early
    Saturday....*

How the Chemical Industry Joined the Fight Against*Climate Change*

It might seem surprising to find the world's chemical companies on
the front lines of preventing*climate change*, fighting ....Despite
the remaining issues, the Kigali deal was an example of an emerging
dynamic, where companies pre-empt environmental policy changes by
developing more planet-friendly products, then push for regulation
that grows that market, environmental experts say....“More and more
companies are looking further and further down the timeline to see
what changes they can expect, and what they need to phase out of
their products,” said Baskut Tuncak, a lawyer at the United Nations
specializing in toxic chemicals....“It shows regulations do drive
innovation,” Mr. Tuncak said. “The more we have a global approach,
the better it is, even for businesses.”

6 ways*climate change*is threatening food security — and what we can

essential to include*global warming*in conversations about food
insecurity, here are six facts about the intersection of hunger and
climate - and what experts say we need to do going
forward....Research shows that a combination of more frequent and
intense climate disasters, decreases in crop yields and production,
and a lack of natural resources will worsen food insecurity — and
threaten the livelihoods of millions of people....For this year's
World Food Day on Oct. 16, advocates are turning their attention to
the climate to help address this issue. ...To show why it's

*Fracking pumps up public’s climate fears
<http://climatenewsnetwork.net/fracking-pumps-publics-climate-fears/>*

Governments worldwide are finding that public opposition to fracking
for gas is growing because of concerns that it will worsen climate
change....Public opposition to pumping water and chemicals into the
ground to extract gas from shale − the technique known as fracking −
is growing even in the countries whose governments are most in
favour....Although only four countries – France, Bulgaria, Germany
and Scotland – have an outright fracking ban at the moment, many
districts in countries that allow fracking in some areas ban it in
others....This is true in the US and in Canada, where potential
wells will not be developed because local authorities have refused
permission...The carrot for governments generally has been the
promise from the fossil fuel companies of large quantities of
cheaply-extracted gas that will last for decades and cut their
    reliance on imports.

DOOMSDAY climate change lessons are being taught to children as
young as eight who are concluding that human activity threatens to
destroy beautiful ...Organiser and Southern Cross University
education lecturer David Rousell said schools in Bexhill,
Mullumbimby and Alstonville had taken on the interdisciplinary
model, which could be taught in English, creative arts, science and
history classes....“This challenge is about bringing schools
together to embark on projects that have a public outcome and can
create real change,” he said....“Kids are doing amazing work where
they take a photo which represents some aspect of climate change and
they write about it. Some students take photos of beautiful things
such as sunsets or waterways and then write about how it could be
lost or destroyed because of climate change.”...An Education
Department spokesman referred Telegraph inquiries on the new
curriculum to the Board of Studies Teaching and Educational
Standards, which said the program was being trialled but was not
formally endorsed....Last week more than 300 students came together
in a Climate Change Challenge at the uni’s Lismore campus....One
student said: “We were not placed on this Earth to make an
acquisitive and ideal life that supports the human race only.”
