*After hyping itself as antidote to fake news, New York Times hires
extreme climate denier

New columnist Bret Stephens dismisses as "imaginary" the climate
reality routinely reported by the Times.
The New York Times - which advertises itself as a defender of truth
in the Trump era - just hired an extreme denier of climate science
as a columnist.
Stephens was most recently deputy editorial page editor for Rupert
Murdoch's deeply conservative and climate-denying Wall Street
Journal, where, in 2015, he wrote that climate change - along with
hunger in America, campus rape statistics, and institutionalized
racism- are "imaginary enemies." He will now take those views to
the New York Times.
Stephens is unusually extreme and divisive even for a climate
science denier, also comparing scientists and those who accept their
findings to Stalinists, anti-semites, and communists.
In a fawning press release
<http://www.nytco.com/bret-stephens-joins-nyt-opinion/>, the Times
calls Stephens "a beautiful writer" who brings to the paper,
"profound intellectual depth, honesty and bravery." Judge for yourself:
Stephens' July 2008 column, titled,"Global Warming as Mass
Neurosis," <https://www.wsj.com/articles/SB121486841811817591>
begins, "last week marked the 20th anniversary of the mass hysteria
phenomenon known as global warming. Much of the science has since
been discredited."
His November 2015 column, "Liberalism's Imaginary Enemies,"
<https://www.wsj.com/articles/liberalisms-imaginary-enemies-1448929043>
previewing the Paris climate talks, calls concern over climate
change "hysteria" and compares global warming to hunger in America,
institutionalized racism, and campus rape statistics - all things he
says are "imaginary enemies."

where he writes the Global View column ...

In generational shift, college Republicans poised to reform party
on*climate change*
<http://www.reuters.com/article/us-climatechange-politics-youth-feature-idUSKBN17E2XF>
Reuters -22 hours ago
"Climate change is really real and really alarming to me
personally," said Grace Woodward, the College Republicans' president.
In the U.S. Congress and in U.S. party politics, beliefs about
climate change often match party membership: Democrats believe it is
a largely man-made problem and something that needs urgent action,
while a share of Republicans – including President Donald Trump –
have dismissed it as anything from a natural phenomenon to a hoax...
But a younger generation of Republicans – those on college campuses
today – increasingly say they believe climate change is a
human-caused problem, and that Americans have a responsibility to
act on it and protect the environment, according to a Thomson
Reuters Foundation review of college Republican clubs across the
United States.

Harvard scientists to test atmosphere protecting aerosols
<http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-4404212/Harvard-scientists-test-atmosphere-protecting-aerosols.html>
Daily Mail -Apr 12, 2017
Harvard researchers are set to test aerosol sprays that could be
used to combat climate change. The controversial technique could one
day be used to block incoming solar radiation and cool down Earth to
combat the effects of global warming.
During testing, the team will analyse a variety of aerosol materials
that could be used at scale in future.
But the researchers claim that they will not fire more than 1kg
(2.2lbs) of any substance into the stratosphere during testing.
The idea has stirred controversy in the scientific community, even
among those who believe it could effectively tackle global warming...
'Geoengineering is like taking painkillers,' said Keutsch.
'When things are really bad, painkillers can help but they don't
address the cause of a disease and they may cause more harm than
good. We really don't know the effects of geoengineering but that is
why we're doing this research.'
The research is published in the Proceedings of the National Academy
of Sciences.

*Atmospheric CO2 levels accelerate upwards, smashing records
<http://www.nationalobserver.com/2017/04/10/opinion/atmospheric-co2-levels-accelerate-upwards-smashing-records>*
Despite decades of global efforts towards climate policies, clean
energy and efficiency, CO2 levels continue to rise and are actually
accelerating upwards. For those of us hoping for signs of climate
progress, this most critical and basic climate data is bitter news
indeed. It shows humanity racing ever more rapidly into a full-blown
crisis for both our climate and our oceans.
That's the story told by the newest CO2 data released by the United
States National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
*Even the increases are increasing*
The amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere continues to
accelerate upwards despite global efforts
The last two years had "unprecedented" increases
The primary driver of global warming, disruptive climate changes and
ocean acidification is the ever-increasing amount of carbon dioxide
in our atmosphere.
Despite decades of global efforts towards climate policies, clean
energy and efficiency, CO2 levels continue to rise and are actually
accelerating upwards.... It shows humanity racing ever more rapidly
into a full-blown crisis for both our climate and our oceans....
The scientists also pointed out that 2016 "was a record fifth
consecutive year that carbon dioxide (CO2) rose by 2 ppm or
greater." Those last five years also broke a new record by exceeding
+2.5 ppm per year for the first time....
All told, we've managed to pull off the triple crown of climate
failure. The last ten years, five years and two years have all
smashed records for CO2 increases...
Recently the climate press has been buzzing about a hopeful CO2
report from the International Energy Agency (IEA). The IEA estimates
that fossil fuel CO2 didn't increase in either 2015 or 2016. ...how
to reconcile this plateau in fossil fuel CO2 with the continued
acceleration of atmospheric CO2.
*Fossil fuel CO2 might be increasing. *The IEA numbers might be
wrong. They rely on nations to accurately report their fossil fuel
use. Not all of them do, especially when it comes to burning their
own coal supplies. In fact, the lack of a system to accurately
verify national CO2 claims was a key issue in the Paris Climate
Accord discussions. The worry is that as nations face increasing
pressure and scrutiny around their CO2, the incentives to cook the
books will increase. Incorrect accounting of just one percent
globally could switch the storyline from "hopeful plateau" to
"continuing acceleration". The IEA devotes two chapters of their
"CO2 Emissions from Fuel Combustion" report to the various issues
impacting data accuracy.
*Humans might be increasing CO2 emissions from other sectors*.
Roughly a quarter of the CO2 released by humans comes from
non-energy sources not covered in the EIA numbers. These include
land use changes, agriculture, deforestation, fugitive emissions,
industrial processes, solvents and waste. We could be increasing CO2
from these.
*Climate change might be increasing CO2 emissions*. Increases in
wildfires, droughts, melting permafrost - as well as changes to
plankton and oceans - can all cause sustained increases in CO2
emissions. And climate change is affecting all of these. Perhaps
some of these changes are underway.
*The oceans and biosphere might be absorbing less of our CO2*. Much
of the CO2 humans release gets taken up by the oceans (ocean
acidification) and the biosphere (increased plant growth). Some
climate models predict these "CO2 sinks" will lose their ability to
keep up. If that is starting to happen, then dumping the same amount
of CO2 into the atmosphere will result in increasing amounts staying
there.
Unfortunately we don't have good enough measurements to say what the
mix of these factors is. However, what we can accurately measure is
the CO2 level in our atmosphere. That's the CO2 number we have to
stop from rising because it is what drives global warming, climate
changes and ocean acidification. Sadly, it's also the CO2 number
that shows no sign of slowing down yet.
