As one of Greenland's largest ice shelves shrinks, a once-doubtful
scientist has come around to the role of climate change in melting
    it....
The question for Muenchow is no longer whether Petermann is changing
    — it’s how fast it could give up still more ice to the seas. That’s
why he and British Antarctic Survey colleague Keith Nicholls
ventured here by helicopter to take the measure of the Petermann
shelf, which had been shifting and surging in a way that damaged the
scientific instruments they had left behind a year earlier —
behaving as though it didn’t want to be known.

Even as head of the EPA, Pruitt might struggle to undo the actions
that the agency has already taken. Rescinding rules takes time and
would inevitably be stalled by litigation, Harvard law school
professor Jody Freeman wrote for the Harvard Law School
Environmental Law Program. For example, the EPA determined in 2009
that carbon dioxide emissions endanger health and welfare and can
thus be regulated under the Clean Air Act, Freeman wrote. That
finding has already been put through the crucible of the courts and
has been upheld. It would be "extremely difficult, if not
impossible" to reverse that finding at this point, she wrote. [6

*This Day in Climate History January 1, 1990, Jan 1. 2010

- from D.R. Tucker*

January 1, 1990: In his World Day of Peace message, Pope John Paul
    II declares:

"The most profound and serious indication of the moral
implications underlying the ecological problem is the lack of
respect for life evident in many of the patterns of
environmental pollution. Often, the interests of production
prevail over concern for the dignity of workers, while economic
interests take priority over the good of individuals and even
entire peoples. In these cases, pollution or environmental
destruction is the result of an unnatural and reductionist
vision which at times leads to a genuine contempt for man.

"On another level, delicate ecological balances are upset by the
uncontrolled destruction of animal and plant life or by a
reckless exploitation of natural resources. It should be pointed
out that all of this, even if carried out in the name of
progress and well-being, is ultimately to mankind's disadvantage."

    .

January 1, 2010: In his World Day of Peace message, Pope Benedict
    XVI declares:

"In 1990 John Paul II had spoken of an 'ecological crisis' and,
in highlighting its primarily ethical character, pointed to the
'urgent moral need for a new solidarity.' His appeal is all the
more pressing today, in the face of signs of a growing crisis
which it would be irresponsible not to take seriously. Can we
remain indifferent before the problems associated with such
realities as climate change, desertification, the deterioration
and loss of productivity in vast agricultural areas, the
pollution of rivers and aquifers, the loss of biodiversity, the
increase of natural catastrophes and the deforestation of
equatorial and tropical regions? Can we disregard the growing
phenomenon of 'environmental refugees,' people who are forced by
the degradation of their natural habitat to forsake it – and
often their possessions as well – in order to face the dangers
and uncertainties of forced displacement? Can we remain
impassive in the face of actual and potential conflicts
involving access to natural resources? All these are issues with
a profound impact on the exercise of human rights, such as the
right to life, food, health and development."
