The EPA just buried its *climate change*website for kids

The Environmental Protection Agency has sidelined a website aimed at
teaching schoolchildren about*climate change*, a public watchdog group
has determined, as part of the agency's efforts to align online content
with the new administration's values.

*Here's what you can do to fight global warming, beyond changing
lightbulbs
<http://mashable.com/2017/05/06/how-you-can-fight-climate-change>*
*"You marched for science and climate action. Now what?"*

Yet the infuriating reality is that we already have
    <http://grist.org/climate-energy/yes-we-can-beat-climate-change-but-it-will-take-massive-international-government-coordination/>
most of the efficiency and clean energy technologies we need to do
away with fossil fuels. The fossil fuel industry
    <https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s10584-015-1472-5>, in
large part, is standing in the way of their accelerated deployment
    and cost reduction....
This is hardly surprising when the business model of these companies
    isfundamentally incompatible
    <http://priceofoil.org/2016/09/22/the-skys-limit-report/> with the
science of mitigating climate change. And when that model - like our
society as a whole - prioritizes
    <https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2017/apr/12/doughnut-growth-economics-book-economic-model>
economic growth above ecological protection and actual human well-being.
As climate commentator Joe Romm has urged
    <https://thinkprogress.org/end-climate-silence-cbe439a31a8e>: "Talk
about climate change and its solutions with everyone you know a lot
more than you do now." Be vocal on social media, at local events,
and with elected officials, write opinion articles, and, most
importantly, talk to friends, families, and coworkers.

*In Face of Government Apathy, Activists Launch Wave of Global
Divestment Actions

'The movement is stepping up at a time when governments are failing
their people and climate impacts are taking us into uncharted territory'
Intensifying the global demand for nations and institutions to move
away from fossil fuels, campaigners on Friday are launching ten days
of direct actions calling for divestment from the companies most
    responsible for the climate crisis.
From New Zealand to South Africa to Ecuador and beyond, thousands
are expected to take part in the Global Divestment Mobilization
    <https://globaldivestmentmobilisation.org/>, which will include
actions in 39 countries across six continents.
And in Europe, the Green Party on Friday launched a new chapter of
its #DivestEurope campaign, which will focus each month on one of
the continent's major polluters to highlight "why it is necessary to
    withdraw capital" from these companies...
"In the current vacuum of global climate leadership, the divestment
movement has proven to be the most effective way to undermine the
power of the fossil fuel industry politically, financially and by
damaging its reputation," the statement continues. "The movement is
stepping up at a time when governments are failing their people and
climate impacts are taking us into uncharted territory in terms of
floods, forest fires, heatwaves, storms, and drought."

*The Merkley Climate Bill and the Climate Movement
<https://tedglick.com/future-hope-columns/the-merkley-climate-bill-and-the-climate-movement/>*

US Senator Jeff Merkley, with co-sponsorship from Bernie Sanders,
Cory Booker and Ed Markey, has introduced a major piece of climate
legislation, the "100 by '50 Act." The primary objective of the bill
is "to transition away from fossil fuel sources of energy to 100%
clean and renewable energy by 2050."
I started hearing about this a couple of weeks before the Peoples
Climate March on April 29th, and the first things I heard about it
were critical. One criticism was that it was weak on new oil and gas
infrastructure buildout, allowing it to continue until 2021. The
other main criticism was that it was too moderate and weak as far as
its objective, that the rapidly deepening climate crisis called for
a much more rapid shift to 100% renewable energy, that we just don't
have the time for it to take place incrementally over the next 33 years.
On April 27th the legislation was publicly announced and released.
I've read through its 319 pages, and in general I found a lot to
    like. Some examples:
-It aims to shift not just to 100% renewables-generated electricity
by 2050, but to 100% of all new car sales in 2050 being electric
cars, and "residential and commercial heating systems that eliminate
    fossil fuel emissions by 2050."
-"Beginning on January 1, 2021, there shall be a moratorium on
Federal permit approval for 1) any new electric generating facility
that generates fossil fuel energy through the combustion of any
fossil fuel resource; 2) any new gathering line or interstate
pipeline for the transport of any fossil fuel resource that a)
crosses Federal land or navigable water; or b) requires the use of
eminent domain on private property…4) any new import or export
    terminal for fossil fuel resources…"
The Merkley-initiated bill is the latest in a series of climate
bills that have been introduced over the last decade or so, none of
which have been enacted. We all know this bill is not going to pass
as long as Donald Trump is in the White House and the Republicans
control at least one house of Congress.
And given the reality of the Senate filibuster, it's hard to see a
bill like this passing unless the Democrats win 60 seats in the
Senate. This is not a bill that Republicans are going to support.

*(video) Consensus on consensus: summary of studies into scientific
consensus on climate change <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=91WzsaahZYY>*
*John Cook is lead author of a 2013 paper confirming that the vast
majority of climate scientists agree that humans are causing global
warming.*

Since its publication Cook et al. 2013 has been persistently
attacked, despite the fact that several other studies have found
similar results (90-100% agreement of climate scientists). Now the
authors of seven of the leading studies into scientific consensus on
human-caused global warming have come together to confirm what we
know: there is a consensus on the consensus. Humans are causing
    global warming.
In this video, we discuss how their work has been misrepresented and
why the public is largely unaware of the high-level of scientific
    agreement.

In fact, climate change is already affecting personal human health
around the world. This subject was the focus of a summary report
    <https://medsocietiesforclimatehealth.org/reports/medical-alert/>
just published by the Medical Society Consortium
    <https://medsocietiesforclimatehealth.org/>. What I really liked
about this report is that it breaks down some of the key impacts by
region. Unfortunately, the report is limited in scope to the USA.
However, the general conclusions and trends can be illuminating for
people outside the USA as well.

Report: Medical Alert! Climate Change Is Harming Our Health
    <https://medsocietiesforclimatehealth.org/reports/medical-alert/>
We-physicians in medical societies representing over half of the
nation's doctors-see a need to share our growing understanding and
concern about the health consequences of climate change with all
    Americans.

BOISE - Fire has been a part of Idaho long before it even existed as a
territory. Since records have been kept, the Gem State is second only to
Alaska when it comes to acres burned, according to recent data, with
more than 12 million acres scorched*..*

It is a fact that those least responsible for*global warming*, the
global poor living in the global south, are most immediately vulnerable
to climate change.

- from D.R. Tucker*

May 7, 2010: Noting that the journal Science has published a letter
from 255 members of the National Academy of Sciences, calling for an
end to the right wing's war on climate science, Rick Piltz of
    Climate Science Watch observes:
"Apparently, a strongly worded statement from many of our most
esteemed scientists, about climate science and a controversy that is
very much in the news and fundamental to our future, is considered
unworthy of space in the New York Times, the Washington Post, and
the Wall Street Journal. All three rejected the 700-word, op-ed
length letter before it was published [in] Science."
...we see weak coverage in U.S. newspapers. The London Guardian in
the UK does a better job on this, with a good article

and the full text of the letter
