*(USA Today) What if U.S. quits climate deal? Doesn't look good for
Earth
<https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/world/2017/05/27/what-if-us-quits-climate-deal-doesnt-look-good-earth/102235234/>*
WASHINGTON - Earth is likely to reach more dangerous levels of warming
even sooner if the U.S. retreats from its pledge to cut carbon dioxide
pollution, scientists said. That's because America contributes so much
to rising temperatures.
President Trump, who once proclaimed global warming a Chinese hoax, said
in a tweet Saturday that he would make his "final decision" this coming
week on whether the United States stays in or leaves the 2015 Paris
climate change accord in which nearly every nation agreed to curb its
greenhouse gas emissions.
Leaders of seven wealthy democracies, at a summit in Sicily, urged Trump
to commit his administration to the agreement, but said in their closing
statement that the U.S., for now, "is not in a position to join the
consensus."

*Pope's climate essay won't convince Trump, it didn't even work on
Catholics
<http://www.climatechangenews.com/2017/05/26/popes-climate-essay-wont-convince-trump-didnt-even-work-catholics/>*
By George Marshall Pope's encyclical on climate change appealed to
liberals, but conservative Catholics were driven away by the values it
invoked.
Following their tense and grumpy meeting this week the Pope cheekily
presented Donald Trump with a parting gift: his 165-page Encyclical on
Care for our Common Home, better known as Laudato Si, in which he
outlines his commitment to action on climate change.
Trump's face, shared widely on social media, hardly suggests any great
delight and we cannot expect that a dense theological text will trigger
his climate epiphany
But then Trump was never the intended audience. The critical question is
whether, in the two years since it was released ahead of the Paris
climate conference, the papal encyclical has shifted opinion among
Catholics. And unfortunately the answer is "probably not".
What was more surprising, though, was that the encyclical actually
increased polarisation. Research by Yale University found that following
the publication of the encyclical the number of Catholics who strongly
trusted the Pope as a source of information about global warming
increased by a quarter. The number who strongly distrusted him doubled.

the next three days, according to forecasters.

TULSA, Oklahoma - The weather will play a big role in your Saturday
outdoor plans across eastern Oklahoma on two fronts. First, it is going

*Tornadoes among dangers as severe weather outbreak targets central US
<http://www.accuweather.com/en/weather-news/severe-storms-flooding-to-threaten-holiday-festivities-across-central-us-this-weekend/70001767>*
An outbreak of severe weather will continue to threaten lives and
property across the central United States into Saturday night.
Numerous thunderstorms capable of producing widespread damaging winds,
destructive hail, flooding downpours and tornadoes will continue to bear
down on the central U.S. from eastern Kansas to Arkansas and the lower
Ohio River Valley.
"A far-reaching swath of wind damage may lead to widespread tree damage
and power outages," AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Kristina Pydynowski
said. "Gusts could reach minimal hurricane-force strength."
"Clusters of violent thunderstorms are expected to race from eastern
Kansas and Missouri into Tennessee and Arkansas into Saturday night,"
she said. "Western Arkansas and northeastern Texas will also face the
severe weather that first erupts in eastern Oklahoma."

*Leaders issue G7 declaration with U.S. a holdout on climate change
<http://www.politico.com/story/2017/05/27/trump-paris-climate-deal-238883>*
Trump posted on Twitter that he'll make a final decision next week,
after he returns to Washington.
TAORMINA, Sicily - Leaders of the G7, the world's most exclusive
geopolitical club, issued their 2017 declaration Saturday, with U.S.
President Donald Trump refusing to join his counterparts in pledging
commitment to the 195-nation Paris accord on climate change...
Trump, posting on Twitter, said he would make a decision on whether the
U.S. would remain in the climate change accord next week, after he
returns to Washington. The other six members of the G7 - Canada, France,
Germany, Italy, Japan and the U.K. - reaffirmed "strong commitment" to
the agreement, which Barack Obama signed in 2015.
While the declaration included remarkable language highlighting that the
U.S. stood apart, the other G7 members expressed some relief that Trump
had not outright rejected the accord and said they remained hopeful he
would come around

The Baywatch cinematic reboot, starring god-among-men Dwayne "The Rock"
Johnson, lesser deity Zac Efron, and Priyanka "Miss World 2000" Chopra,
is out in theaters on Friday. We, the movie going public, should be
blessed by this release, but early reviews suggest it's actually just
too ridiculous.

*This Day in Climate History May 28, 2003
<http://www.nytimes.com/2003/05/28/business/exxon-backs-groups-that-question-global-warming.html>
- from D.R. Tucker*
The New York Times reports on ExxonMobil's crucial role in the
climate-denial industry:

Exxon Mobil has publicly softened its stance toward global warming
over the last year, with a pledge of $10 million in annual donations
for 10 years to Stanford University for climate research.

At the same time, the company, the world's largest oil and gas
concern, has increased donations to Washington-based policy groups
that, like Exxon itself, question the human role in global warming
and argue that proposed government policies to limit carbon dioxide
emissions associated with global warming are too heavy handed.

Exxon now gives more than $1 million a year to such organizations,
which include the Competitive Enterprise Institute, Frontiers of
Freedom, the George C. Marshall Institute, the American Council for
Capital Formation Center for Policy Research and the American
    Legislative Exchange Council.

The organizations are modest in size but have been outspoken in the
global warming debate. Exxon has become the single-largest corporate
donor to some of the groups, accounting for more than 10 percent of
their annual budgets. While a few of the groups say they also
receive some money from other oil companies, it is only a small
fraction of what they receive from Exxon Mobil.
