*Guidance about Planning for Natural Disaster Debris*
The 2019 "Planning for Natural Disaster Debris" guidance is an update to
the version that EPA published in March 2008. It is designed to help all
communities (including cities, counties, territories, tribes, etc.)
create disaster debris management plans, which EPA strongly encourages.

The Planning for Natural Disaster Debris guidance assists communities in
planning for natural disaster debris before a disaster occurs, including
hurricanes, earthquakes, tornadoes, volcanoes, floods, wildfires and
winter storms, by providing useful, relevant information that is
intended to increase community preparedness and resiliency. Information
is included on the following:

Recommended components of a debris management plan,
Suggested management options for various natural disaster debris streams,
A collection of case studies that highlights how several communities
prepared for and managed debris generated by recent natural disasters,
Resources to consult in planning for natural disasters, and
EPA's recommended pre-incident planning process to help prepare
communities for effective disaster debris management.
Note: EPA integrated lessons learned from the 2017 hurricane seasons
into this 2019 final guidance document.

*The battle against climate change by Paul Kingsnorth *
vpro documentary 49 minutes
Published on Apr 26, 2019
Humanity has lost the battle against climate change. That is what Paul
Kingsnorth thinks. The former environmental activist believes that we
can´t stop climate change anymore. How should we live on knowing that
climate change is a fact that can´t be denied anymore? A documentary
that gives thinker and writer Paul Kingsnorth the time to explain how
humanity still can be hopeful although the battle against climate change
in his eyes has been lost...
- -
Thinker and writer Paul Kingsnorth stood early on the barricades as a
conservationist. He resisted the insatiable hunger of the globalized
world for more land, resources and things in England and on the other
side of the world in Papa New Guinea. Kingsnorth was one of the leaders
of the environmental movement and reached a large international audience
with its passionate speeches. But at some point, he came to terms that
he had to revisit his belief that humanity could save the world...
- -
Kingsnorth withdrew with his family to the Irish countryside to live
self-sufficient. He founded the "Dark Mountain Project" in which
writers, poets and artists are looking for a different view of the end
of the world, based on the connection between man and nature. He
exchanged his clenched fist and protesting voice for an inner, literary
search for the question of what makes us human and what our place is on
this magical planet.

*Virtual Earth System Laboratory*
Welcome to the Virtual Earth System Laboratory! On this site, a
sophisticated computer model called the Ice Sheet System Model (ISSM) is
being made available to the public, allowing real-time simulations of
the effects of environmental change on glaciers, ice sheets, sea level,
and the geology of Earth.
Try out the simulations -- and change their properties -- using these links:
We present results of ISSM simulations from present day to 500 years
into the future. These simulations capture sea-level rise around the
world as one of Antarctica's main glaciers, Thwaites Glacier, retreats
inland. The first simulation shows how the grounding line (line where
the grounded ice of Antarctica comes afloat) retreats when the bedrock
under the ice does not move (green line). The second simulation includes
a new state of the art model where the bedrock is now considered
elastic, and rebounds as the ice retreats inland (red line). As time
evolves and Thwaites Glacier starts thinning, both grounding lines
retreat. However, the red grounding line is slower to retreat. This in
turns results in a smaller contribution to sea-level rise. Indeed, the
rebound of the bedrock acts as a negative feedback, or stabilizer,
slowing down the thinning of Thwaites Glacier.

*This Day in Climate History - April 28, - from D.R. Tucker*
April 28, 2013: Slate's Phil Plait re-debunks the "Why don't they call
it global warming anymore?" talking point often heard on the Fox News
Channel: this talking point had been previously debunked by Peter
Sinclair of ClimateCrocks.com.
