*BlackRock CEO backs mandatory climate reporting, urges U.S. action*
By Simon Jessop, Matthew Green
LONDON (Reuters) - Larry Fink, chief executive of the world's largest
asset manager BlackRock, said on Tuesday he backed the UK's recent move
to make the reporting of corporate risk related to climate change
mandatory, and urged the United States to follow suit.
"We welcome the UK Chancellor's announcement yesterday (of) mandatory
TCFD reporting," Fink told the Green Horizon Summit in London, referring
to the Taskforce on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures, which will be
required from large companies and financial institutions by 2025.
Also on Monday, the Financial Conduct Authority said premium listed
companies would need to make the disclosures from January.
"The United States, for its part, should move faster so we can achieve
greater global coordination."
Examples of action could include U.S. regulator, the Securities and
Exchange Commission, asking companies to provide clear, standardised
climate risk information consistent with the TCFD requirements.
The Department of Labor could also make it "easier, not harder" for
asset managers to integrate sustainability issues into their investment
strategies, Fink added, referring to a recent, contentious move to curb
such investing.
The Federal Reserve and other central banks should also bring climate
risk into their prudential and supervisory oversight processes, he added.
As climate change drives a "tectonic shift" in capital allocation across
the financial system, Fink said he welcomed the decision by the UK
government to join the growing number of countries to issue green bonds.
"We see clear demand for such assets from investors worldwide.

*First-mover advantage*
In marketing strategy, first-mover advantage (FMA) is the competitive
advantage gained by the initial ("first-moving") significant occupant of
a market segment. First-mover advantage enables a company or firm to
establish strong brand recognition, customer loyalty and early purchase
of resources before other competitors enter the market segment.
First movers in a specific industry are almost always followed by
competitors that also attempt to capitalise on the first movers'
success. These followers are also aiming to gain market share, however,
most of the time the first-movers will already have an established
market share with loyal customer base to be able to maintain the
majority of the market...

*How One Firm Drove Influence Campaigns Nationwide for Big Oil*
FTI, a global consulting firm, helped design, staff and run
organizations and websites funded by energy companies that can appear to
represent grass-roots support for fossil-fuel initiatives...
- -
An examination of FTI's work provides an anatomy of the oil industry's
efforts to influence public opinion in the face of increasing political
pressure over climate change, an issue likely to grow in prominence,
given President-elect Joseph R. Biden Jr.'s pledge to pursue bolder
climate regulations. The campaigns often obscure the industry's role,
portraying pro-petroleum groups as grass-roots movements.
As part of its services to the industry, FTI monitored environmental
activists online, and in one instance an employee created a fake
Facebook persona -- an imaginary, middle-aged Texas woman with a dog --
to help keep tabs on protesters. Former FTI employees say they studied
other online influence campaigns and compiled strategies for affecting
public discourse. They helped run a campaign that sought a securities
rule change, described as protecting the interests of mom-and-pop
investors, that aimed to protect oil and gas companies from shareholder
pressure to address climate and other concerns...
- -
The business of corporate consulting and public relations is vast, and
countless companies routinely provide media outreach, public messaging,
crisis management and other services. FTI is among them, and it has
taken up an important role in helping promote the messages of the fossil
fuel industry.
Those messages have sometimes run counter to the scientific consensus
that the world must burn less oil and gas to avoid the worst effects of
global warming. Texans for Natural Gas, for example, has downplayed the
magnitude of emissions of methane, the prime component of natural gas
and a potent greenhouse gas, from oil and gas production.
FTI's work is the latest chapter in a long history of campaigns by the
fossil fuel industry, political strategists and public relations
professionals to influence climate policy. The industry has faced tough
headwinds this year, in particular, as demand for oil and gas has
tumbled amid the pandemic.
Founded in 1982 in Annapolis, Md., as a firm that provided expert
witnesses and presentations for litigation, FTI has grown into a
multinational firm that employs almost 5,000 people in 28 countries. Its
business spans a wide range of services, from business consulting to
crisis communications...

*The Arctic is refusing to refreeze this winter. That's... worrying.*
Never before has the Arctic remained this ice-free for this long into
the autumn. It's a scary development that is having worldwide implications.

*Arctic Resilience Forum - Indigenous Youth Leadership Session*
Oct 24, 2020
Sustainable Development Working Group
A powerful new generation is emerging in the Arctic. A generation that
is strong and full of new ideas, a generation that is ready to tackle
issues head on. Indigenous youth are the future of arctic communities,
and many are already making their voices heard. The Indigenous Youth
Leadership session explores the challenges that Indigenous youth face,
and what crises are affecting them. The session discusses how Indigenous
youth are stepping into leadership roles, and how they can be enabled to
capture new opportunities for their communities. The session examines
some of the existing efforts to empower young people to take on
leadership roles.
This session begins by introducing the Arctic Indigenous context and
resilience thinking. This leads into a moderated Lavvu Dialogue with
Indigenous Youth from the circumpolar Arctic (A 'lavvu' is the Sami term
for the traditional nomadic tent, which represents a key arena for
discussions that bridge different views and interests).
The Arctic Resilience Forum 2020 launched by consulting Indigenous Youth
about their aspirations and the supports they need to become resilience
Arctic leaders.

*On this day in the history of global warming - November 13, 2005 *
November 13, 2005: Fox News Channel airs "The Heat is On: The Case of
Global Warming," a special that reportedly (and surprisingly,
considering Fox's track record) does not feature any climate-change
deniers. After fossil-fuel-industry front groups attack Fox for not
including their viewpoint, Fox runs a special several months later
featuring the views of climate-change deniers.
2005-2006: Fox News Airs Special On Reality Of Climate Change,
Experiences Exxon-Fueled Backlash
Fox News Aired A Special Explaining The Science Of Climate Change
With No False Balance. In 2005, Fox News aired a special titled "The
Heat Is On: The Case of Global Warming," which reportedly did not
dispute the science. Fox News' preview of the special stated that
"producers traveled to Alaska's Glacier Bay to see evidence of
climate change and to speak with scientists who have studied this
phenomenon for more than 30 years." In addition to scientists, Fox
News interviewed President George W. Bush, former President Bill
Clinton, and climate activists who are "committed to teaching
everyday Americans and the rest of the world about what can be done
to cut down on greenhouse gasses that threaten our children's
future." Fox News unequivocally stated the threat of climate change:
Drastic climate changes during the last 100 years have experts
worried about the effects of greenhouse gasses.
[...]
Increasingly, as you will see in this special, scientists and
government officials alike are agreeing that man's impact on
climate has been extreme and the air that we breathe may hold a
degenerating quality of life for our children. [FoxNews.com,
