*Living within our carbon budget | The role of politics, technology and
personal action*
Climate Uncensored
Sep 2, 2022  #emission #climatechange #energy
When we hear politicians and some scientists talk about climate change,
it is easy to get the impression that we just need to build lots of
low-carbon technology to reach ‘net’ zero emissions by 2050. But that is
far from honest, and dangerously misleading.

We explain why it is the total amount of carbon dioxide that we put into
the atmosphere that causes global warming. This can be expressed as a
‘carbon budget’ for a given probability of staying within a particular
temperature rise. Such a scientifically robust framing of the climate
challenge has major political and social implications. Critically, it
brings the key timescale to act forward to between now and 2030. We
unpack the budgets for 1.5°C and 2°C, and suggest what would have to be
done to keep warming to no more than 2°C, and how everyone has a role to
play.

ℹ️ ABOUT THE CARBON BUDGETS IN THIS FILM
We recorded this in summer 2021. The 800 GtCO2 mentioned in the video is
based on the budget for a 50/50 chance of 1.7°C in the IPCC’s SR1.5
report [1], which at the time had the most up to date science on
emissions budgets. 1.7°C was taken to capture the essence of the
commitments in the Paris Agreement to hold “the increase in the global
average temperature to well below 2°C… and to pursue efforts to limit
the temperature increase to 1.5°C”, at least as far as a single value can.

This year (2022) the IPCC released AR6, its Sixth Assessment Report [2],
which contains several updates to the carbon budgets, as a result of
improvements in understanding of how the climate responds to emissions,
and of the likely risk and scale of earth system feedbacks (sometimes
referred to as ‘tipping points’).

AR6 puts the budget for a 50/50 chance of staying below 1.7°C at 850
GtCO2 from the start of 2020. From the start of September 2022, the
remaining budget has dropped to around 740 GtCO2, for all CO2 emissions
sources (energy, food, industrial processes, and land use change &
deforestation). Note: the AR6 budget for a 50% chance of 1.7°C is very
close to that for a 'good chance' (83%) of staying below 2°C (900 GtCO2
from start of 2020). Once process emissions from cement production are
excluded, this leaves around 17 years’ worth of emissions from the
energy system.

However, in recent years there has been increasing emphasis on the 1.5°C
limit in the Paris Agreement, as a more appropriate threshold for
‘dangerous climate change’. This is a result of improved scientific
understanding of the severity and immediacy of impacts at 1.5°C,
particularly for climate vulnerable nations in the Global South.

Again based on AR6, the global carbon budget remaining for all emissions
sources from September 2022 for a 50/50 chance of keeping within 1.5°C
is around 390 GtCO2. Once an allowance is made for cement production,
this amounts to around 7 years at the rate of current emissions from
energy. For a 'good chance' (83%) of staying below 1.5°C, there is less
than 3 years’ worth of budget left for energy.

Note that these global budgets take no account of differential
responsibilities between countries for causing or dealing with climate
change. Once EQUITY is taken into consideration, industrialised
countries clearly have far fewer years' worth of emissions remaining
than poorer countries. Our next video on equity will deal with this in
more detail.

“Earth’s resources are limited - but human ingenuity is infinite!”
That's the belief at the heart of the techno-optimist view that
technology and innovation can provide solutions to the ecological
breakdown. But are tech innovations actually delaying the most crucial
climate action of all - slashing emissions?

Join Ali in the second episode of #AllHailThePlanet - a series delving
into the social, economic and political forces undermining meaningful
global action on climate change.

In this episode, Ali Rae speaks with Professor of Energy and Climate
Change, Kevin Anderson, environmentalist and co-founder of 350.org, Bill
McKibben, writer and energy analyst Ketan Joshi and Åsa Larsson Blind,
Vice President of the Saami Council in Finland.

/[ Yale connects with video games and climate ]/
*Climate Activism and Attitudes in Videogaming*
On December 9th, 2022, the Yale Center for Environmental Communication
hosted a panel with Marina Psaros, head of sustainability at Unity
Technologies; Deborah Mensah-Bonsu, founder of Games for Good; and Dr.
Jennifer Carman, Deputy Research Manager at the Yale Program on Climate
Change Communication on videogaming and climate change. The discussion
centered on the ways in which digital games can be utilized for
large-scale social change in relation to our recent report of video
gamers’ opinions on global warming. Dr. Lynn Fiellin, Professor of
Medicine at the Yale School of Medicine, the Yale Child Study Center,
and the Yale School of Public Health, moderated the panel.
*Key Takeaways include:*
--- The gaming community is more than its stereotypes: its demographics
reflect the United States’ and videogamers hold similar attitudes toward
climate change.
Videogamers are more willing to engage in behaviors to combat global
warming than the general U.S. public and therefore represent a critical
and untapped resource for climate action.
--- There are existing and developing strategies for “saving the world”
with games:
Expand the definition of “green games.”
Blend in-game and real world experiences through augmented reality to
generate interest in specific actions and/or offering in-game rewards
for real-world actions. This can additionally be used to collect
citizen-sourced data from around the world that can be used by an
international research community.
Reduce the carbon footprint of games themselves, particularly through
scope 3 emission reductions.
---Videogamers are generally receptive to climate change-specific
content in games and from well-known gamers.

Games for Good found that a large majority of videogamers appreciate the
importance of gaming as an environmental educational tool and welcome
environmental content in the games they play, with the important caveat
that the content needs to fit the overarching storyline of the game.

*Climate Activism and Attitudes in Video-gaming
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8tVBkzvTeqM&t=225s*

Prominent players (i.e. “trusted messengers”) in the videogaming
community can and have been successfully using their prominence to push
for change.
The International Game Developers Association Climate Special Interest
Group (IGDA CLIMATE SIG) is a gathering space for this type of work.
--- There are many ways videogamers can advocate for change within their
community.
It is important both that influencers talk about these issues to their
followers and that gamers talk to their friends and family about climate
topics.
To reduce electricity consumption, gamers can look into powering their
home or their gaming technology with renewable energy; they can also set
their devices to efficiency modes (on consoles, in-game settings, power
strips, and more).
To reduce waste, gamers can keep their consoles and other technology as
long as possible. However, the responsibility also lies with developers
to not require new technologies to play a game.
-- Younger gamers are part of a generation that has been especially
active in drawing attention to racial and social injustices, mental
health issues, and climate change. There are great opportunities for
these voices to be uplifted within the gaming community to promote
action instead of overwhelmed inaction.

We gladly include the voice of William Rees in the introductory courses
here in Living Resilience. Rees offers an all too rare perspective that
includes multiple human-caused predicaments in a conversation that often
is limited to "Climate Change."

We hope you enjoy and learn a great deal from Rees' broad yet deep
perspective - and his no nonsense insistence on the inclusion of:
species extinction, biodiversity loss, and perhaps most pointedly,
Overshoot.
