**The Power of Big Oil, Part Three: Delay *(full documentary)**| FRONTLINE
May 3, 2022
FRONTLINE PBS
Watch the final episode of “The Power of Big Oil,” a three-part
FRONTLINE docuseries investigating what scientists, corporations and
politicians have known about human-caused climate change for decades —
and the missed opportunities to mitigate the problem.
This journalism is made possible by viewers like you. Support your local
PBS station here: http://www.pbs.org/donate.
Throughout the first two episodes of “The Power of Big Oil,” FRONTLINE
went inside the fossil fuel industry’s efforts in the 1980s, 1990s and
2000s to stall action on climate change by cultivating denial and doubt.
The third and final episode of the series brings the story up to the
present.
“Delay,” part three of “The Power of Big Oil,” investigates how, even as
the warnings about climate change grew, the U.S. reemerged as one of the
world's biggest oil and gas producers, and the fossil fuel industry
worked to delay the transition to renewable energy sources — including
by promoting natural gas as a cleaner alternative. But as the country
was entering a gas boom, a former Exxon Mobil engineer tells FRONTLINE
that the industry wasn’t monitoring for methane leaks that could
turbo-charge the climate crisis.
As it brings the Big Oil series to a close, “Delay” unpacks the Obama,
Trump and Biden administrations’ actions on climate change; explores
what may happen next; and examines what’s at stake.
Part one, “Denial,” is now streaming: https://bit.ly/3xTxYhg
Part two, “Doubt,” is also streaming: https://bit.ly/37UjSSm
“The Power of Big Oil” is a FRONTLINE Production with Mongoose Pictures
in association with BBC and Arte. The series producer is Dan Edge. The
producer and director of episode 3 is Robin Barnwell. The editorial
consultant is Russell Gold. The senior producers are James Jacoby and
Eamonn Matthews. The executive producer for FRONTLINE is Raney
Aronson-Rath.

*Supreme Court abortion ruling could have climate fallout*
By Pamela King, Robin Bravender | 05/03/2022 ...

*Climate politic*s
The Dobbs leak also reshapes the political landscape heading into the
2022 midterm elections and could affect how climate and energy policy
negotiations shake out in the coming months. It could also affect which
party controls Congress next year, as Democrats cling to narrow
majorities in both chambers heading into the elections this fall.
Republicans and Democrats alike are hopeful that the political fallout
from overturning Roe would boost their chances of winning seats in November.
If the court “does overturn Roe, it will fall on our nation’s elected
officials at all levels of government to protect a woman’s right to
choose,” President Joe Biden said today in a statement. “And it will
fall on voters to elect pro-choice officials this November. At the
federal level, we will need more pro-choice Senators and a pro-choice
majority in the House to adopt legislation that codifies Roe, which I
will work to pass and sign into law.”
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said the leak appears to
have been orchestrated by the “radical left,” and he urged the Justice
Department to “pursue criminal charges if applicable.”
Some legal observers said it is just as likely that the leak came from a
conservative, potentially in an effort to dissuade Kavanaugh and Barrett
from changing their votes before the court issues its final opinion in
the case.
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) suggested last night that the
court’s expected ruling should spur Democrats to take legislative action.
“People elected Democrats precisely so we could lead in perilous moments
like these — to codify Roe, hold corruption accountable, & have a
President who uses his legal authority to break through Congressional
gridlock on items from student debt to climate,” she wrote on Twitter.
“It’s high time we do it.”
Ahead of the November elections, the contentious battle over abortion
rights could make compromise on already contentious issues like climate
and energy even more elusive.
“I don’t see this unlocking any pent-up desires to cut deals on issues,”
whether it’s abortion rights or climate change, said Manley, the former
Reid aide.
“I think this is going to drive Congress further into a hyperpolarized
environment.”

*Climate change could cost U.S. $2 trillion each year by the end of the
century, White House says*
PUBLISHED MON, APR 4 2022
Key Points,
- - Floods, drought, wildfires and hurricanes made worse by climate
change could cost the U.S. federal budget about $2 trillion each
year by the end of the century, the White House said on Monday.
- -The analysis by the Office of Management and Budget, which
administers the federal budget, also said the U.S. government could
spend an additional $25 billion to $128 billion each year in such
areas as coastal disaster relief, flood insurance and crop insurance.
- - The news comes the same day as the United Nations’ climate
science panel’s highly anticipated report, which warned that
slashing global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius above preindustrial
levels will require greenhouse gas emissions to peak before 2025.

*Scorching weather forces India to face climate change head on*
Tens of millions of Indians are struggling to cope with a relentless
heatwave, with temperatures reaching record highs.
Tens of millions of Indians are struggling to cope with a relentless
heatwave, with temperatures in some regions the hottest in more than 120
years in this South Asian nation.
“It is becoming unattainable for me to accomplish my job,” Singh, 47, a
father of two, told Al Jazeera. “I could efficiently do the work the
previous summer. I fainted a couple of times already during this summer.
I don’t know how will I meet the end needs of my family.”
Pravesh Solanki, 32, another construction labourer, echoed the comments
but noted it is not just older people facing the challenges of working
outdoors in the extreme heat.
“We are young and full of energy. Still, we hold for a breather after
every half an hour, which we used to take after an hour or two. This
summer is extraordinarily pinching us,” said Solanki...
- -
Gupta said while global climate change is mostly responsible, local
factors are contributing to the unprecedented heat.
“We also have local issues like the high emissions in the big cities due
to which a regional ‘heat island’ is created. Heat islands are the parts
of a city which are warmer than others. So, internationally global
warming and locally heat islands are responsible for such heatwaves,” he
added...
- -
“At the same time the government, corporations, and society need to
prioritise transition in energy, agriculture, and other sectors to
tackle climate change. Phasing out the burning [of] fossil fuels –
including energy and transportation systems – is the most practical and
urgent solution governments need to implement to protect the public
health and future generations.”

*Sherry says country facing climate emergency*
Minister for climate change warns against risks and vulnerability for
the local and downstream population
May 02, 2022
Federal Minister for Climate Change Senator Sherry Rehman on Monday said
Pakistan is right now bracing for a heatwave, with unprecedented high
temperatures creating climate emergencies from north to south of the
country.
Senator Rehman said the human and infrastructure costs could be very
high. “Because of our northern mountain ranges and glaciers, we
anticipate Global Lake Outburst Floods (GLOF), where glacial lakes first
form due to snow melt on the glaciers”, she added.
The catastrophe, she said arises when the melting snow unleashes the
lakes as a racing flood that rips out everything in its way.
“These pose serious risks and vulnerability for the local and downstream
population as Pakistan right now has over 3,044 such lakes identified in
the mountains”, she said.
The minister said, “The mountains are also exposed to forest fires and
sudden bush combustion events, which we struggle to cope with. So far,
our response teams are vigilant, but of course one cannot predict what
will happen with a higher scale of sudden and extreme weather events.”
For the south, hugely reduced rainfall, sizzling temperatures would
expose people who work in the field or on urban sites in the open sun to
dangerous dehydration, while crops would yield reduced harvests as the
water reservoirs dry up, she noted.
Ms Rehman said, “Our big dams are at dead level right now, and sources
of water are scarce as well as contested between riparians among the
Indus and its canals. This is an all encompassing existential crisis,
and must be taken seriously. While Pakistan strives to reduce its GHG
emissions it is really the victim of other big polluters.”
“It is in fact a contributer of only 0.81 % of GHG (Green House Gas)
emissions globally and our number is 132nd in the list out of 190
countries while Pakistan’s per capita GHG emissions are less than 1%.
However, we have been constantly among the top 10 countries affected by
Climate Change, we hover between number 5 and 8”, she added.
Senator Rehman said Pakistan is only 9 percent net global polluter but
pay a heavy price like the rest of the Global South.
While some countries were helping bilaterally with technical advice and
best practices exchanges, I did not see any huge transfer of carbon
credits to Pakistan from global adaptation and mitigation fund pools,
she said.
“There is clearly an urgent need for better public service communication
and crisis preparedness from the NDMA and provincial governments.
Learning from our past experiences we must remember that the heatwave in
2015 took more than a thousand lives in Karachi, and in 2015 it happened
during Ramzan when people couldn’t keep themselves sufficiently hydrated”.
“Climate and weather events are here to stay and will in fact only
accelerate in their scale and intensity of global leaders don’t act
now,” she said.

==============================================================================
The planet is in crisis. Everywhere we turn, there is another climate
change fueled disaster. We are headed at full speed into unknown and
uncharted planetary conditions. Survivability on planet Earth for the
ironically named species homo sapiens (wise man) will not exist for very
much longer.
In case it is not yet clear to you, I am a "doomer."
In these videos, I will be covering current climate disasters in real
time, reacting to the day's news and giving you my analysis and
perspective. These diaries are as much for the viewer to learn and keep
up with the day's big disaster news as they are a tool for me to relieve
my own sadness, stress and sense of futility. Life will go on until it
doesn't. But along the way it will be very sad.
In the mean time, please consider these three choices for living your
life you can make right now:
1) Be kind. Avoid pettiness and battles over the small stuff. And
today, more than ever before, it is ALL small stuff.
2) Be generous. To the best of your ability, give to others. Give to
people who are in need. Give to organizations that are doing what they
can to prolong habitable spaces and conditions where nature can endure.
3) Be of service. Find ways to donate your time to help others and help
the planet. If you help one butterfly live another day, you have done
enough.
And love. Most of all, love. Others may not agree with your politics,
your thoughts about COVID or your religious views on the meaning of
life. But they are going through the end of global-industrial
civilization with you and they are going through the sixth mass
extinction with you. So at the very least, you can love them.
