/[ overview from journalist Nick Breeze ]/
*Bill McGuire's Hot House Earth [Book] - Reflections on our current
trajectory*
Oct 8, 2022  In this ClimateGenn episode, I speak with climate scientist
& author Professor Bill McGuire about his recent book titled Hot House
Earth. Bill discusses the necessity to discuss worse-case climate
outcomes at a time when emissions are still rising and political leaders
are looking the other way.

[Visit https://genn.cc for more content & https://patreon.com/genncc ]

We discuss the absence of global leadership in the fight to hold
temperature rise to within the boundaries that humanity has thrived for
the last 11 thousand years. The rate of change means that the next 100
years, let alone the next ten thousand, really require global leadership
and collective action from everyone on Earth who has the ability and
agency to act.

/[Nick Breeze interview -- reaching and using social tipping points -
video discussion ]/
*Action And Activism: Is it time to mobilise the moderate flank?*
Oct 16, 2022  Recent activism in the UK has made worldwide headlines. By
bringing cultural treasures into the discussion, it raises new anxieties
and questions about what is at stake.

The visual impact of the soup hitting the van Gogh painting was
viscerally shocking to many, including myself. On reflection it reminded
me of when the painter Francis Bacon was asked what he would save in a
burning house if the choice was between a Rembrandt self-portrait and
cat. Without hesitation Bacon said the cat, emphasising the value of
life over art.

With that in mind, the Living Planet Report, shows that animal
populations have declined by 70% since 1970. This is mass extinction
territory and it is the world that these protestors are trying to draw
the wider publics attention to.

Regardless of what we think of their action, the post war boomer
generation and my own that have succeeded it, have partaken in this
destruction both of the complex web of life on Earth and also the dreams
and aspirations of the next and every successive generation.

In this ClimateGenn episode, recorded a few weeks ago with, author,
philosopher and former XR spokesperson, Professor Rupert Read, and his
colleague 'Systems and culture change strategist’ Paddy Loughton, we
discuss urgent need for a mobilisation of the moderate masses in what
they define as a Moderate Flank.

Social tipping points occur when enough when the force of change can no
longer be held back. But what does a Moderate Flank actually look like?

/[  World oppression of oil activists by the "timber mafia"  -- DW video
documentary ]/
*Environmentalists in danger | DW Documentary*
Oct 29, 2022  The fight against the destruction of nature is a dangerous
one. Around the globe, people are risking their lives to protect the
environment and climate. When environmentalists’ activities disrupt
organized crime and other illegal profiteers, they are sued, threatened
and even murdered.

According to the organization Global Witness, 227 environmental
activists were killed in 2020 alone, and the number of unreported cases
is probably much higher. In addition to environmentalists, indigenous
people who fight illegal land grabs and journalists who report on
environmental crimes are often also in grave danger. This documentary
accompanies those for whom fighting for the environment is dangerous work.

The filmmakers travel to Nigeria, a country known for its oil wealth.
But in parts of the Niger Delta, people suffer due to leaking oil
pipelines. Huge areas are contaminated with oil, leading to empty
fishing nets, polluted water, contaminated fields and a high mortality
rate. Many people are starving. And they are as good as defenseless,
because anyone who resists the oil mafia is threatened or even killed.

In Peru, non-governmental organizations and indigenous people are up
against international corporate interests that exploit the rainforest.
Illegal palm oil, cocoa and coffee plantations are tearing huge holes in
the jungle. Added to this is the overexploitation of tropical timber
and, more recently, the production of cocaine. For those who want to
protect the Amazon rainforest, the work is extremely dangerous.

In Europe, too, the pressure on environmentalists is growing. Due to an
increase in timber and energy prices, illegal logging in Romania's
forests is becoming more and more profitable for criminals. And those
who work to uncover the illegal business live in fear of retribution...

*Nova Scotia touted its huge ‘green’ energy plant. Turns out it’s
powered by coal*
The province is facing a 2030 deadline to shut down coal plants
supplying 51% of its electricity in 2019.
The ‘green’ hydrogen produced to deliver ammonia to Europe will be
partly powered by the fossil fuel in the beginning, a joint
investigation found
Joan Baxter

Heading into November there is no prospect green power will be available
by the time the EverWind Fuels facility begins operations, the Energy
Mix and Halifax Examiner have learned in a joint investigation in
partnership with the Guardian.

In fact, the project touted for its potential to convert wind-generated
electricity into a badly-needed green product will be powered partly by
coal, at least in its first years of operation.

The picture is further complicated in a province facing a 2030 deadline
to shut down the coal plants that supplied 51% of its electricity in
2019, even as the rise of electric heat pumps and vehicles drives up
demand for power.

That effort, in turn, is an essential part of prime inister Justin
Trudeau’s government’s signature pledge to phase out all remaining
coal-fired electricity and cut the country’s greenhouse gas emissions by
40% to 45% by 2030.

Nova Scotia has five large onshore wind farms due to start up by 2025,
but they’ll account for only 30% of its electricity use – without
factoring in new demand, much less the needs of the EverWind plant.

In a 20 September release, Nova Scotia premier Tim Houston’s office said
a separate set of leases would deliver “5 gigawatts of offshore wind
energy by 2030 to support [the province’s] budding green hydrogen
industry”. But that’s just the deadline for offering leases to wind farm
developers, with actual production expected around 2038, a provincial
spokesperson later clarified. The5 gigawatts, she added, is a target,
not a firm commitment.

Green hydrogen is produced from fresh water by a process of
electrolysis. It’s often used to make ammonia, which is easier to store
and transport. It only earns the “green” label if it’s made from
renewable electricity.
