potential to reveal new patterns to scientists and get data out
of the arcane language of empirical orthogonal functions,
p-values and Kruskal-Wallis tests and into a language that
everyone can understand....The research Oakes had just heard
came courtesy of Nik Sawe, a fellow Stanford PhD student at the

to find some data to turn into music after going to a talk about

<blockquote> <font size="-1">The International Criminal Court (ICC)
announced this week that it would start considering cases
involving environmental destruction, misuse of land, and land
grabs as crimes against humanity....The move reflects a
broadening perspective on what constitutes a war crime, as seen
in recent prosecutions for cultural devastation and coral reef
destruction...."The systemic crimes committed under the guise of
'development' are no less damaging to victims than many wartime
atrocities," said Richard Rogers, a partner at Global Diligence,
in a statement. "The ICC Prosecutor has sent a clear message
that such offences may amount to crimes against humanity and can
no longer be tolerated."</font><br>

What's Up With All The Dead Trees?</a><br>
<blockquote> <font size="-1">Gaze across the mountains of the
Northwest these days and you may notice an unusual number of
dead firs, pines and other conifer trees scattered among the
green ones. Drought is usually considered the prime culprit. But
recent research suggests the damage that has historically been
done to conifer forests by routine dry spells is being
compounded by climate change... What foresters call "drought
related conifer mortality" is reaching record levels throughout
much of the Pacific Northwest. A 2009 study by researchers from
the University of Washington, Oregon State University and
federal agencies found the rate of tree death in the region had
doubled over the preceding 17 years. Max Bennett -- an Oregon
State University Extension agent in the Rogue Valley -- says
he's seen the situation getting worse. ....Meaning the forest
landscapes our grandchildren grow up with could look very
different from the one's we've enjoyed for generations.</font><br>

warming, rising seas and coastal cities: Trends, impacts and
adaptation strategies</a></b><br>
<blockquote> <font size="-1">Flooding and climate change, This
updated collection of research looks at how coastal areas are
affected by global warming, with a focus on rising sea levels,
flooding and weather changes.......While climate change remains
a politically charged issue in the U.S. despite the overwhelming
evidence, efforts are underway to better understand the risks,
prepare for the future and increase community resiliency. The
Department of Defense, per its "Climate Change Adaptation
Roadmap" of October 2014, has sought to adapt its facilities to
a projected sea-level rise of 1.5 feet as early as 2034, though
congressional Republicans have blocked efforts to fund the
research.... A 2014 study in the Proceedings of the National
Academy of Sciences found that large-scale urban adaptation
strategies have the potential to counteract some of the effects
of long-term global climate change.... ...Below is a series of
studies examining climate-change related risks and the regions
and demographic groups most threatened by them; efficacy of
attempts thus far to mitigate these risks; and adaptive
solutions for coastal regions. Many recent studies focus on
particular communities facing inundation around the world.</font><br>
