One of the key differences between Greenland in the north, and
Antarctica in the south, has been that Greenland, because of its
geography and smaller size, has been more subject to warming
enough on the surface to create significant meltwater, that
collects in lakes, visible in broad areas during the summer.
This surface melt has a number of significant effects on ice
dynamics, as Jason Box spells out in this 2014 video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_PEi0Retg8A
....Up until now, this kind of surface dynamic has not been
documented on the gigantic, and
not-so-long-ago-thought-invulnerable East Antarctic ice sheet.
Projections of Antarctic melt focused mainly on the dynamic of
ocean waters eating away and undermining the ice edges...The
fact that we are seeing these is an unscheduled wake up call.
farming and land-use because they're having so much trouble
everywhere else."...The world's cropland has the potential to
store 20 billion tons of carbon on about 4 billion acres over a
25-year period. That is enough to offset as much as 15 percent
of carbon emissions from fossil fuel burning each year. France
recently launched an international initiative to boost the
organic carbon in soil by 4 parts per thousand, which it says is
enough to offset annual increases in overall carbon emissions.

GENEVA — The World Meteorological
Organization warned recently that Arctic sea ice was melting
faster than expected, indicating dramatic changes in the climate
system. The agency called for establishment of an Arctic
observatory to help cope with the potentially dangerous
changes....The WMO considers changes in the Arctic akin to a
"canary in a coal mine" in terms of signaling an impending
disaster. The agency noted that global temperatures were
continuing to rise as a result of climate change, with 2016
predicted to be the hottest year since record-keeping began 150
years ago.....What's more, WMO said, the Arctic is warming at
least twice as fast as the world average. It said Arctic sea ice
now covers 40 percent less area at the peak of the summer melt
season than it did in the late 1970s and early 1980s. It said
the maximum Arctic sea ice extent in March was the lowest on
record.
