economy could 'self-destruct' if world carries on burning fossil
fuels, leading economist warns</a></b><br>
<blockquote><font size="-1"><b>Professor Lord Nicholas Stern</b> –
author of the influential Stern Review on climate change in 2006
– says 'strong investment' in green technologies could finally
revive growth in the world economy...A renowned economist who
helped persuade the world to start taking climate change
seriously has warned the global economy could "self-destruct" if
countries fail to ditch fossil fuels and embrace a clean, green,
high-tech future....Professor Lord Nicholas Stern was credited
with bringing about a sea change in attitudes when he calculated
the cost of failing to tackle the problem in 2006. While dealing
with global warming would cost one per cent of the world's gross
domestic product, doing nothing would be up to 20 times more
expensive, he concluded....Now Professor Stern, former Mexican
president, Felipe Calderón, and other leading figures from
politics, finance and science have launched a major new report
saying Governments and businesses must change course – and
quickly...."The challenge is urgent: the investment choices we
make even over the next two to three years will start to lock in
for decades to come either a climate-smart, inclusive growth
pathway, or a high-carbon, inefficient and unsustainable
pathway," said the report by The Global Commission on the
Economy and Climate...."The window for making the right choices
is narrow and closing fast … The time is ripe for a fundamental
change of direction. Video summary: <a

<blockquote><font size="-1"> When the original Montreal Protocol
phased out chlorofluorocarbons, which were destroying the
planet's ozone layer, manufacturers had to find a replacement
chemical to use as refrigerants and in other industrial
applications....Along came HFCs, which were much better for the
ozone layer but, like CFCs, also happen to be a strong global
warming agent. The chemicals are vastly more powerful than
carbon dioxide over a 100 year time frame when it comes to
warming the atmosphere. So one huge environmental crisis was,
in effect, replaced by another problem lingering on the
horizon......from the atmosphere over the next 35 years...
"freeze dates," or years when they must peak their HFC emissions
and then begin to bring them down steadily over time. And in
many cases, those freeze dates will be quite soon. For developed
nations like the United States, the date will be 2019. For the
majority of developing nations, it will be 2024, except for a
few nations, including India and Pakistan, which will take a
little longer, until 2028.</font><br>

<blockquote><font size="-1">(opinion) ... relying on the uncertain
concept of negative emissions as a fix could lock the world into
a severe climate-change pathway.....In the past decade, an
ambitious — but still mostly hypothetical — technological
strategy for meeting our global climate goals has grown
prominent in scientific discussions. Known as "negative
emissions," the idea is to remove carbon dioxide from the air
using various technological means, a method that could
theoretically buy the world more time when it comes to reducing
our overall greenhouse-gas emissions. ... Recent models of
future climate scenarios have assumed that this technique will
be widely used in the future. Few have explored a world in which
we can keep the planet's warming within at least a 2-degree
temperature threshold without the help of negative-emission
technologies. But some scientists are arguing that this
assumption may be a serious mistake. </font><br>

touring the Southeastern states of Alabama, Mississippi, Florida
and Louisiana this month as part of the group's Southern Energy
Freedom Tour to make the case for their policy, which they see
as a market-based approach to battling climate change that is
preferable to increased regulations from the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency. ...<br>

<blockquote><font size="-1">"Last summer, one of the hottest and

'greenhouse effect'--the gradual warming of the globe that
threatens to turn coastal cities into underwater ruins and corn
fields into salt flats.... "The problem is that for the last
century or so industrial societies have been releasing
substances into the air that capture heat and erode the Earth`s
shield against the sun. The villains? Carbon dioxide from the
burning of fossil fuels, methane from natural and man-made
sources and aerosol propellants...."But as soon as the heat
dissipated, so did interest in the issue. In the campaign, the
greenhouse effect has gone almost unmentioned..."Both candidates
pretend the solutions will be painless and free. Both pass over
the obvious remedies in favor of the politically appealing
ones...."The nations of the world have taken one step by
agreeing on a treaty to reduce the use of aerosol propellants.
But any serious attempt to slow the warming of the Earth
requires at least three additional measures: discouraging the
use of fossil fuels like coal, oil and gas; big improvements in
energy efficiency; and greater reliance on nuclear power." </font><br>
