On Sunday, the UK tabloid Mail on Sunday alleged a seemingly
juicy (if unoriginal) climate science scandal. At its core,

<blockquote>Reporting on science is difficult at the best of
times, but with "alternative facts" gaining traction, the door
        to misinformation is wide open.<br>
"If there are projected changes in mild weather, that means
there are changes in temperature, precipitation and/or
humidity," she said, noting that although mild weather could
create more opportunities for things such as outdoor recreation,
it could also have negative consequences like changing snowmelt
        patterns and threatening water resources.<br>
Mild weather at the wrong time and place can be disastrous. The
wildfire that devastated Fort McMurray last year reached city
limits on a mild weather day, with an average temperature of
22.1 C and no precipitation, after several weeks of unseasonably
        warm and dry weather.<br>
"Mild weather is not good for everything," Van der Wiel wrote.
"If you like skiing, increasing mild weather is bad. We haven't
investigated the coincidence of wild fires with mild weather,
but such a link might exist and would indicate again that
climate change is something the global community should try to
        mitigate as much as possible."<br>
This research is an important piece of emerging narrative about
the impacts of climate change, but we must consider it in the
context of all the work on climate. Prior to her work on mild
weather, Van der Wiel studied extreme precipitation and flooding
in the U.S. She has since moved to a project investigating
climatic conditions that could negatively affect agriculture, to
determine if it's possible to warn farmers and communities in
        advance of bad crop years.<br>
Science is the most useful tool we have to adapt to climate
change and avoid its worst outcomes. But it requires critical
thinking and a big-picture perspective to ensure we consider all
available evidence. With so many people scrolling through social
media feeds for news rather than reading entire articles, facts
and clarity can become elusive. It's up to us all — media and
consumers alike — to dig deeper for the full story.<br>

multiple time scales, from a single day or week, to months or

Everything Else, We're Now Dealing with a War on Science</a></b><br>
    <blockquote> <font size="-1">All data must be patriotic! ... Lamar
Smith has not yet begun to subpoena!  ... Congressman Smith is
        completely bananas. <br>
WASHINGTON—The House of Representatives organized its committees
on Tuesday, setting up the ground rules for the real mischief to
come.  One of these committees is the ironically named House
Committee on Science, Space and Technology, and it is chaired by
one Lamar Smith, Republican of Texas. Congressman Smith is a
complete creature of the fossil fuel industry. Smith is one of
the more prominent climate denialists in a caucus full of them.
In the previous Congress, as chairman of this same committee,
Smith got the committee rules changed so that he was allowed to
issue subpoenas acting unilaterally. He then went to town...<br>
....there has always been tension between scientists and
Congress. But Smith, who has been in Congress since 1987 and
assumed the chairmanship of the Science Committee in 2013, has
escalated that tension into outright war. Smith has a background
in American studies and law, not science. He has, however,
received more than six hundred thousand dollars in campaign
contributions from the oil-and-gas industry during his time in
Congress—more than from any other single industry. <br>
Smith introduced legislation requiring that all scientists
applying for federal grants guarantee, in a special section of
their grant applications, that their work is in "the national
interest." It's hard to know exactly what Smith means by this,
but whatever it means it sets a dangerous precedent, because
fundamental research should be driven by curiosity—by the simple
desire to generate new knowledge—rather than by anyone's
political agenda. The real national interest is always served by
the generation of new knowledge; Smith seems to think that only
some knowledge is appropriate. The House passed his bill in
        February.<br>
In related news, the Dakota Access pipeline got final approval
on Tuesday. This is going to be the first time that a federal
government under Donald Trump faces direct resistance on the
ground to one of its policies. I cannot imagine this ending
        entirely well.<br>
