is an almost 50% chance that the Labrador Sea in the North
Atlantic Ocean will cool rapidly within the next decade...
For thousands of years, parts of north-west Europe have enjoyed a
climate around 5°C warmer than many other regions on the same
latitude. But new scientific analysis suggests that that could
change much sooner and much faster than thought possible...
Climatologists who have looked again at the possibility of major
climate change in and around the Atlantic Ocean, a persistent
puzzle to researchers, now say there is an almost 50% chance that
a key area of the North Atlantic could cool suddenly and rapidly,
within the space of a decade, before the end of this century...
That is a much starker prospect than even the worst-case
scientific scenario proposed so far, which does not see the
Atlantic ocean current shutdown happening for several hundred
years at least.
possibility of a collapsed Atlantic Meridional Overturning

Abstract

Changes in the Atlantic Meridional Overturning
Circulation (AMOC) are moderate in most climate model projections
under increasing greenhouse gas forcing. This intermodel consensus
may be an artifact of common model biases that favor a stable
AMOC. Observationally based freshwater budget analyses suggest
that the AMOC is in an unstable regime susceptible for large
changes in response to perturbations. By correcting the model
biases, we show that the AMOC collapses 300 years after the
atmospheric CO2 concentration is abruptly doubled from the 1990
level. Compared to an uncorrected model, the AMOC collapse brings
about large, markedly different climate responses: a prominent
cooling over the northern North Atlantic and neighboring areas,
sea ice increases over the Greenland-Iceland-Norwegian seas and to
the south of Greenland, and a significant southward rain-belt
migration over the tropical Atlantic. Our results highlight the
need to develop dynamical metrics to constrain models and the
importance of reducing model biases in long-term climate
projection.

The Atlantic Monthly magazine Looks Ahead to the 21st
Century ONE of the most shocking scientific realizations of all
time has slowly been dawning on us: the earth's climate does great
flip-flops every few thousand years, and with breathtaking speed.
We could go back to ice-age temperatures within a decade -- and
judging from recent discoveries, an abrupt cooling could be
triggered by our current global-warming trend. Europe's climate
could become more like Siberia's. Because such a cooling would
occur too quickly for us to make readjustments in agricultural
productivity and supply, it would be a potentially
civilization-shattering affair, likely to cause an unprecedented
population crash. What paleoclimate and oceanography researchers
know of the mechanisms underlying such a climate flip suggests
that global warming could start one in several different ways.
With its 2016 National Environmental Scorecard, the League of
Conservation Voters has failed to see the climate vision behind
Bernie Sanders' historic presidential campaign. That vision is the
only way forward for the Democratic party.
Earlier today, the League of Conservation Voters (LCV) released its
vaunted National Environmental Scorecard for 2016, measuring the
green voting records of U.S. members of Congress. While there are no
surprises for fringe lawmakers like Sen. James Inhofe (R-OK) and
Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), many were certainly befuddled to learn that
Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) has received a score of 6%. To put that
in perspective, 6% is only two points higher than what Alabama's
Republican Senators Jeff Sessions and Richard Shelby were awarded in
last year's edition.
This year, LCV wants to convince the public that Colorado's two
senators are stronger environmental allies than Bernie Sanders.
Democrat Michael Bennet, who voted twice in favor of the Keystone XL
pipeline and is known to have an affinity for fracking, received a
100% score. And Republican Corey Gardner got a 29% rating, 11 points
higher than his lifetime average and 23 points higher than Sanders.
The day that I concede that Bennet and Gardner are better for the
environment than Bernie Sanders is the day that I concede that Jesus
Christ was indeed a white man with blonde hair and blue eyes.
Last month City Pages brought you the story of a perfectly decent
drawing of a dick in the snow of Loring Park in Minneapolis. All
in good cheer, we thought then...
Sure, it was a little chilly in early January, but no one worried.
This -- until we're absorbed by Canada -- is still Minnesota and
besides, this winter's been unusually mild. The rest of that
month, and in early February, the daily high temperature often
rose above freezing; and last weekend was so unseasonably warm,
people stripped down to their shirts and dined outdoors on
patios...
What fools. For, by drawing the snow dick, we in the Twin Cities
apparently summoned the snow-dick-storm of the year...
The imminent arrival of a phallic-shaped snow event was predicted
by the National Weather Service radar (and noticed by a City Pages
tipster) on Wednesday. The weather system runs through parts of
the Dakotas and northern Wisconsin; the tip appears to be resting
in Lake Superior, which sounds like really cold. ..
Minnesota is getting the shaft.
