<blockquote><b>REGIONAL CONFLICTS:</b> Climate change has increased
drought in the middle east, and has contributed to the rise of
ISIS and the destabilization of the middle east playing out now.
This in turn has led to the millions of Syrian and other refugees
in temporary refugee camps in countries outside of the worst
impacted areas and the hundreds of thousands of refugees
attempting to get to Europe and often drowning. Researchers Link
Syrian Conflict to a Drought Made Worse by Climate Change.<br>
<b>MIAMI IS SINKING:</b> Many parts of Miami are already
experiencing sea water welling up from under foot at king tides
and some are experiencing regular flooding at merely high tides.
This is with the relatively small amount of sea level rise already
experienced. This is an indicator of what is to come. Miami Is
Sinking Into the Sea—But Not Without a Fight.<br>
<b>FARMERS ARE UNDER STRESS:</b> Farmers are already adapting to
changes in climate, but not without impacts. There is already an
increase in frequency and severity of drought and heavy rains,
extremes which make getting crops difficult. Already crops are
shifting north in the northern hemisphere. Climate Impacts in the
Midwest: Becoming More Resilient.<br>
<b>PINE BEETLE DEVASTATING FORESTS:</b> The Pine Beetle has
shifted its range further north with increasingly warm climates in
North America, moving into Canada and devastating extremely large
areas of pine forest. This has caused significant economic and
environmental fallout. The Bug That's Eating the Woods<br>
<b>WILDFIRES ARE INCREASING:</b> Wildfires are becoming more
frequent, more severe and covering more ground due to climate
change. This is killing people, burning communities out, reducing
air quality substantially over major areas of continents and
costing quite a lot to deal with. Is Global Warming Fueling
Increased Wildfire Risks?<br>
<b>INSURANCE PREMIUMS ARE UP:</b> Insurance companies have been
paying out a lot more in claims due to climate change, and in
return have been changing their premium structures and rates. They
have seen a statistically clear indication of climate change in
terms of extreme weather events which cause significant economic
damage. Extreme weather forces insurers to adapt and lobby for
change.<br>
<b>HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS ARE ALREADY DYING ANNUALLY:</b> A UN
organization tasked with monitoring the impacts of climate change
calculates that climate change is already causing 400,000
premature deaths a year. CLIMATE VULNERABILITY MONITOR.<br>
<b>PERMAFROST IS MELTING:</b> Northern communities and physical
infrastructure is built on permanently frozen ground, which if
melted is a quagmire. Melting of this permafrost is already
occurring, destroying buildings and infrastructure such as roads.
Permafrost warming in parts of Alaska 'is accelerating' - BBC
News.<br>
<b>JELLYFISH BLOOMS ARE CAUSING DAMAGE: </b>Jellyfish are
enjoying the warmer oceans, and increasing substantially in range
and numbers. They are clogging thermal power plant intakes causing
the plants to shut down and destroying fish farms. Massive Swarms
of Jellyfish Are Wreaking Havoc on Fish Farms and Power Plants.<br>
<b>TORNADOES ARE INCREASING AND SHIFTING RANGE:</b> Tornadoes are
clustering, increasing in destructive power and being seen further
north and in different times of the year. This is one of the
predictions of climate change models and appears to be playing
out. Communities with no tornado warnings or experience in dealing
with them are being hit. New U.S. tornado trend is worrisome.<br>

Kevin Trenberth and Reto Knutti<br>
<blockquote>...with regard to climate science, as evidenced by the
hearing of the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology,
chaired by Lamar Smith, on March 29, 2017....<br>
The kinds of statements made by Smith, the president and Pruitt
are misguided. They show a woeful ignorance about science and how
it works, and in particular about climate science. Consequently,
they ignore sound advice on how to best plan for the future.<br>
...The wonderful thing about science is that it is not simply a
matter of opinion but that it is based upon evidence and physical
principles, often pulled together in some form of "model."<br>
...there is a great deal of data because of the millions of daily
observations made mostly for the purposes of weather forecasting.
Climate scientists assemble all of the observations, including
those made from satellites... and then analyze the data in various
ways...<br>
In most cases, these adjustments can be performed very rigorously
because of neighboring observations and overlapping observations.
For example, sea surface temperatures come from multiple sources,
such as ships and drifting buoys,...While the data are of mixed
quality and length, they encompass many variables that can be
related physically - temperatures, winds, humidity, rainfall, etc.
- and together they tell a very compelling story....<br>
One form of model may be statistical and empirical in nature, such
as how often to restock supermarket shelves. This is not the case
for climate science. Because we don't have a physical system to
experiment with, climate scientists build a virtual planet Earth
in a computer. Computer models are based upon the physical laws of
nature represented by mathematical equations that are solved using
numerical methods applied to a three-dimensional grid over the
globe...<br>
Accordingly, we have many facts and physical understanding of the
Earth's climate. The role of scientists is to lay out the facts,
their interpretation, and the prospects and consequences as best
we can. But the decision about what is done with this information
is the responsibility of everyone, including and often led by
politicians. The failure of Lamar Smith and his ilk to recognize
that climate scientists ask legitimate scientific questions, and
moreover, that they that they provide very useful information for
decision-makers, is a major loss for the public.<br>

<blockquote> California made no secret of its ambitions when it
enacted a landmark law on global warming just over a decade ago.
Progress here on slashing greenhouse gas emissions, the law said,
would have "far-reaching effects by encouraging other states, the
federal government and other countries to act."<br>
Now the goal has become more critical than ever as President Trump
rolls back national environmental regulations. No matter how hard
California pushes, the country will fall short of its obligations
under the Paris agreement on climate change unless more states try
to keep pace....<br>
The gap in environmental policies between California and other
states has quickly morphed into a source of international concern.
The United States must slash emissions by at least 26% below 2015
levels by 2025 to hit its target in the Paris agreement. If other
countries such as India don't see the world's largest economy
upholding its end of the deal, the entire framework for averting
the worst effects of global warming could collapse. On Thursday,
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Scott Pruitt
called for an "exit" to the climate agreement.<br>
"You could begin to see an unraveling of this coalition," said
Robert Stavins, director of the Harvard Environmental Economics
Program.<br>

consisted of a GPS sensor, a camera and a message for President
Trump. It was a printout of a tweet that read, "@realDonaldTrump:
Look at that, you son of a bitch."..<br>
"To our knowledge, the Aphrodite 1 launch was the first political
protest in near space," a member of the group wrote to The
Washington Post in an email. (Members of the Autonomous Space
Agency Network, or ASAN, are anonymous as "a way to discourage the
use of the group for the ego or vanity of individual members," the
person said.)...<br>
The tweet was quoting Apollo 14 astronaut Edgar Mitchell, the
sixth person to walk on the moon. He famously said of viewing
Earth from space: "You want to grab a politician by the scruff of
the neck and drag him a quarter of a million miles out and say,
'Look at that, you son of a bitch.' " This quote has been cited as
an example of the overview effect, a perspective shift toward
global unity and conservation reported by astronauts struck by the
planet's fragility...<br>
There is no abrupt boundary between Earth's atmosphere and space.
The balloon ascended to about a fourth of the way to the Karman
line, the point adopted as a shorthand for space more or less
because 100 kilometers up has a nice ring to it.<br>

The Guardian<br>
<blockquote>Nowhere is the attack more ferocious than on the issue
of global warming, where the Trump administration has taken a
wrecking ball to the modest but ...<br>
There is nothing subtle about Trump's antipathy to science. As a
candidate, he dismissed decades of established scientific evidence
by calling global warming a "hoax" and he has displayed an
unprecedented disregard for facts and evidence throughout his
brief presidency, even on matters as trivial as the size of the
crowd at his inauguration....<br>
What unites these disparate acts is the principle that
demonstrable facts and evidence – not fake news, alternative
facts, supposition or innuendo – must form the backbone of public
decisions. It is what separates a democracy from a theocracy,
monarchy, or dictatorship, all forms of government in which "the
truth" is whatever the ruler says it is...<br>
My organisation, the Union of Concerned Scientists, with its more
than 500,000 members and supporters, has joined with allies from
the climate, environmental justice and labour movements to help
organise both the March for Science and the People's Climate
March...<br>
As the demonstrations are likely to show, an enormous number of
people understand what is stake. The greatest attack on science in
memory may wind up spurring the greatest mobilisation of
scientists, and allies far and wide, we have ever seen...<br>

Day in Climate History April 16, 2005</a> - from D.R. Tucker</b></font><br>
<font size="+1">In his weekly radio address, President George W.
Bush declares:<br>
</font>
<blockquote>"In the coming days and weeks I'll talk more about what
we need to do in Washington to make sure America has an energy
policy that reflects the demands of a new century. The first order
of business is for Congress to pass an energy bill. Next week
Congress begins debate on energy legislation and they need to send
me a bill that meets four important objectives:<br>
"First, the energy bill must encourage the use of technology to
improve conservation. We must find smarter ways to meet our energy
needs, and we must encourage Americans to make better choices
about energy consumption. We must also continue to invest in
research, so we will develop the technologies that would allow us
to conserve more and be better stewards of the environment. <br>
"Second, the energy bill must encourage more production at home in
environmentally sensitive ways. Over the past three years,
America's energy consumption has increased by about 4 percent,
while our domestic energy production has decreased by about 1
percent. That means more of our energy is coming from abroad. To
meet our energy needs and strengthen our national security we must
make America less dependent on foreign sources of energy. <br>
"Third, the energy bill must diversify our energy supply by
developing alternative sources of energy like ethanol or
biodiesel. We need to promote safe, clean nuclear power. And to
create more energy choices, Congress should provide tax credits
for renewable power sources such as wind, solar, and landfill gas.
We must also continue our clean coal technology projects so that
we can use the plentiful source of coal in an environmentally
friendly way. The bill must also support pollution-free cars and
trucks, powered by hydrogen fuel cells instead of gasoline. <br>
"Finally, the energy bill must help us find better, more reliable
ways to deliver energy to consumers. In some parts of the country,
our transmission lines and pipelines are decades older than the
homes and businesses they supply. Many of them are increasingly
vulnerable to events that can interrupt and shut down power in
entire regions of the country. We must modernize our
infrastructure to make America's energy more secure and
reliable."
