        Go Out Around The World For 'Earth Hour' To Highlight Climate

    A record number of countries and territories participated in this
    year's event.<br>
    People in 188 countries and territories turned off their lights on
    Saturday evening to mark the 11th annual Earth Hour, a global
    initiative that seeks to raise awareness of climate change.<br>
    The campaign set a new participation record, according to the World
    Wildlife Fund (WWF), whose Australia branch launched the first event
    in 2007. Along with individuals darkening their homes, more than
    17,900 landmarks and monuments turned out their lights. <br>
    Those landmarks included Rome's Colosseum, Paris' Eiffel Tower,
    Sydney's Opera House, and London's Buckingham Palace.<br>

        to hold inquiry on global warming's impact on human rights</a></b><br>
    The <b>Commission on Human Rights (CHR) </b>will hold its first
    public hearing this week on a landmark complaint alleging that
    several multinational oil and mining firms have violated the human
    rights of Filipinos by causing global warming that has led to
    natural disasters.<br>
    Among those named in the complaint are international oil giants
    Chevron and BP, as well as miner Tio Tinto, according to petitioner
    Greenpeace.<br>
    The CHR told ANC on Sunday that while the agency cannot impose
    penalties, the hearings will set as a precedent towards fighting
    climate change.<br>
    "We have sent the message that we are here not to establish any
    financial liability. We are here to establish whether or not human
    activity, so-called anthropogenic processes are involved in bringing
    about climate change," said CHR Commissioner Roberto Cadiz.<br>
    The first of the series of hearings will be held from March 27th to
    28th.<br>

    Expedition travel companies build fleets of adventure ships which
    are able to make it deep into ice-covered Arctic waters.<br>

    We are thrilled to announce the name of our new polar ship: <b>National
      Geographic Endurance</b> <br>
    said Sven Lindblad, President and CEO of Lindblad Expeditions, in a
    keel laying ceremony in Gdynia, Poland, this week.  <br>
    "She is named in honor of Ernest Shackleton, Lindblad Expeditions'
    most revered explorer, and will incorporate technical advances and
    create opportunities for guests beyond the reach of any contemporary
    ship," the experienced cruise company leader said.<br>
    The new vessel ... is scheduled for delivery in the first quarter of
    2020, Lindblad Expeditions informs. The company has an option for
    two additional ships to be delivered in subsequent years...<br>
    The new Lindblad vessel is far from the only new ice-class cruise
    ship in the making. A review made last year by the Barents Observer
    among major cruise liners shows that <a moz-do-not-send="true"
href="https://thebarentsobserver.com/en/content/foreign-tourist-vessels-line-voyages-franz-josef-land">16
      new purpose-built expedition vessels for Arctic waters now are in
      pipe</a>...<br>
    In addition to the Lindblad Expedition and Aurora Expeditions,
    several other companies look towards icy waters.<br>
    One of the latest ships announced will sail for the French luxury
    expedition operator, Ponant. The cruise liner has ordered the
    world's first non-nuclear cruise ship aimed at sailing to the
    geographical North Pole with up to 270 passengers.<br>
    Last year, Poseidon Expeditions' "Sea Spirit" became the first
    foreign flagged vessel to offer tours from Longyearbyen to the
    Russian Arctic archipelago. Next summer, Norwegian company
    Hurtigruten will have two voyages with their vessel «Spitsbergen»
    from Tromsø via Murmansk to Franz Josef Land.<br>
    The Arctic is sailing up to be one of the most popular destinations
    among well-paying tourists. Interviewed by the Barents Observer at
    Iceland a year ago, CEO of Lindblad Expeditions, Sven-Olof Lindblad
    said mass tourism will come to the Arctic.   <br>
