Activist investors set to challenge energy giant to shift away from
fossil fuels
Shell is expected to face a shareholder resolution calling at its
annual meeting in May for a radical shift away from fossil fuels,
highlighting mounting pressure on the world's largest oil and gas
companies over their contributions to global warming. The
Anglo-Dutch group has gone further than most peers by announcing an
"ambition" last November to reduce its carbon footprint by 50 per
cent by 2050… see <a moz-do-not-send="true"

A record number of countries and territories participated in this
year's event.
People in 188 countries and territories turned off their lights on
Saturday evening to mark the 11th annual Earth Hour, a global
initiative that seeks to raise awareness of climate change.
The campaign set a new participation record, according to the World
Wildlife Fund (WWF), whose Australia branch launched the first event
in 2007. Along with individuals darkening their homes, more than
17,900 landmarks and monuments turned out their lights.
Those landmarks included Rome's Colosseum, Paris' Eiffel Tower,
Sydney's Opera House, and London's Buckingham Palace.
to hold inquiry on global warming's impact on human rights
The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) will hold its first
public hearing this week on a landmark complaint alleging that
several multinational oil and mining firms have violated the human
rights of Filipinos by causing global warming that has led to
natural disasters.
Among those named in the complaint are international oil giants
Chevron and BP, as well as miner Tio Tinto, according to petitioner
Greenpeace.
The CHR told ANC on Sunday that while the agency cannot impose
penalties, the hearings will set as a precedent towards fighting
climate change.
"We have sent the message that we are here not to establish any
financial liability. We are here to establish whether or not human
activity, so-called anthropogenic processes are involved in bringing
about climate change," said CHR Commissioner Roberto Cadiz.
The first of the series of hearings will be held from March 27th to
28th.
[Cruise ship - see for yourself]
<a moz-do-not-send="true"

tourists are about to break the ice
Expedition travel companies build fleets of adventure ships which
are able to make it deep into ice-covered Arctic waters.
March 20, 2018
We are thrilled to announce the name of our new polar ship: National
Geographic Endurance
said Sven Lindblad, President and CEO of Lindblad Expeditions, in a
keel laying ceremony in Gdynia, Poland, this week.
"She is named in honor of Ernest Shackleton, Lindblad Expeditions'
most revered explorer, and will incorporate technical advances and
create opportunities for guests beyond the reach of any contemporary
ship," the experienced cruise company leader said.
The new vessel ... is scheduled for delivery in the first quarter of
2020, Lindblad Expeditions informs. The company has an option for
two additional ships to be delivered in subsequent years...
The new Lindblad vessel is far from the only new ice-class cruise
ship in the making. A review made last year by the Barents Observer
among major cruise liners shows that 16
new purpose-built expedition vessels for Arctic waters now are in
pipe...
In addition to the Lindblad Expedition and Aurora Expeditions,
several other companies look towards icy waters.
One of the latest ships announced will sail for the French luxury
expedition operator, Ponant. The cruise liner has ordered the
world's first non-nuclear cruise ship aimed at sailing to the
geographical North Pole with up to 270 passengers.
Last year, Poseidon Expeditions' "Sea Spirit" became the first
foreign flagged vessel to offer tours from Longyearbyen to the
Russian Arctic archipelago. Next summer, Norwegian company
Hurtigruten will have two voyages with their vessel «Spitsbergen»
from Tromsø via Murmansk to Franz Josef Land.
The Arctic is sailing up to be one of the most popular destinations
among well-paying tourists. Interviewed by the Barents Observer at
Iceland a year ago, CEO of Lindblad Expeditions, Sven-Olof Lindblad
said mass tourism will come to the Arctic.
Climate Change and Climate Engineering
University of California Television (UCTV)
Published on Jan 13, 2017
Over the last 30 years predictions of climate change as a threat to
individuals, societies and nations have changed from possibilities
to realities. Ethical issues associated with which individuals,
companies, nations cause climate change, who might benefit from it,
and who will suffer from the impacts have been part of the
discussion from the beginning. How has thinking about the ethics of
climate change evolved during that time and how does this relate to
the ethics of extreme mitigation efforts like climate engineering?
Margaret Leinen, UC San Diego Vice Chancellor for Marine Sciences,
Director of Scripps Institution of Oceanography, and Dean of the
School of Marine Sciences discusses what can be done, what is being
done, and the ethical implications of deploying solutions. Series:
