<b>The Uninhabitable Earth Edition</b><br>
Slate Money on the scary future of global warming.<br>
By EMILY PECK, FELIX SALMON, and ANNA SZYMANSKI<br>
On this week's episode of Slate Money, David Wallace-Wells joins
Emily, Felix, and Anna to discuss his new book, <b>The
Uninhabitable Earth: Life After Warming</b>, and frankly, freak
everyone out about global warming.<br>

<b>Should We Have Kids?</b><br>

Here is a link to calculate your personal cost of raising a child: <a

<br>
When I think about whether or not to have kids the two biggest
arguments that come to mind are "no, don't add 59 more tons of CO2
to the planet each year" and "yes, we need more kids in the next
generation to care for older generations as they age." It's
confusing. And it's not simple. In addition to these reasons there
are hundreds more -- emotional, cultural, economic and so on.
Research shows that the more educated a person is the less likely
they are to have children and this is often brought up to encourage
people who intellectually prevent pregnancy to have children for the
sake of society. There's social pressure, tradition, wanting
independence, and adventure. <br>
<br>
What I hope to do in this episode is to share some of the most
common arguments for and against having kids while offering a third
option to the debate -- fostering and adoption. I don't know what is
right for any one person (though I do judge) and there's a lot of
factors to consider (some I don't know of or understand). <br>
<br>
As I share in this video, I have parented 12 kids as a foster and or
adoptive parent. I started when I was 27 and it's now been a 10 year
experience. Recently someone asked me to talk about this in a video
so this is an effort to do that. It's certainly not everything I
have to say on the topic including everything I've learned about
sexuality from parenting. I chose not to go into a lot of detail
because I"m still trying to sort out how to describe my experiences
while preserving the anonymity and or confidentiality of my kids.
What I can tell you is that I'm thinking a lot about how and if
there's still interest, I will do my best to share more in the
future. <br>
Stay curious.<br>

[Arctic info]<br>
<b>The urgency of Arctic change</b><br>
Abstract<br>
This article provides a synthesis of the latest observational trends
and projections for the future of the Arctic. First, the Arctic is
already changing rapidly as a result of climate change. Contemporary
warm Arctic temperatures and large sea ice deficits (75% volume
loss) demonstrate climate states outside of previous experience.
Modeled changes of the Arctic cryosphere demonstrate that even
limiting global temperature increases to near 2 C will leave the
Arctic a much different environment by mid-century with less snow
and sea ice, melted permafrost, altered ecosystems, and a projected
annual mean Arctic temperature increase of +4 C. Second, even under
ambitious emission reduction scenarios, high-latitude land ice melt,
including Greenland, are foreseen to continue due to internal lags,
leading to accelerating global sea level rise throughout the
century. Third, future Arctic changes may in turn impact lower
latitudes through tundra greenhouse gas release and shifts in ocean
and atmospheric circulation. Arctic-specific radiative and heat
storage feedbacks may become an obstacle to achieving a stabilized
global climate. In light of these trends, the precautionary
principle calls for early adaptation and mitigation actions.<br>

<b>Earth at 2 degrees hotter will be horrific. Now here's what 4
degrees will look like. - David Wallace-Wells</b><br>
Big Think<br>
Published on Mar 14, 2019<br>
This is what the world will be like if we do not act on climate
change.<br>
- The best-case scenario of climate change is that world gets just
2C hotter, which scientists call the "threshold of catastrophe".<br>
- Why is that the good news? Because if humans don't change course
now, the planet is on a trajectory to reach 4C at the end of this
century, which would bring $600 trillion in global climate damages,
double the warfare, and a refugee crisis 100x worse than the Syrian
exodus.<br>
- David Wallace-Wells explains what would happen at an 8C and even
13C increase. These predictions are horrifying, but should not scare
us into complacency. "It should make us focus on them more
intently," he says.<br>
David Wallace-Wells is a national fellow at the New America
foundation and a columnist and deputy editor at New York magazine.
He was previously the deputy editor of The Paris Review. He lives in
New York City. His latest book is The Uninhabitable Earth: Life

[Classic document from 1988]<br>
1988 Shell Confidential Report "The Greenhouse Effect"<b><br>
</b><br>
<b> </b>The confidential report, "The Greenhouse Effect," was
authored by members of Shell's Greenhouse Effect Working Group and
based on a 1986 study, though the document reveals Shell was
commissioning "greenhouse effect" reports as early as 1981. Report
highlights include:<br>
<blockquote>A thorough review of climate science literature,
including acknowledgement of fossil fuels' dominant role in
driving greenhouse gas emissions. More importantly, Shell
quantifies its own products' contribution to global CO2 emissions.<br>
A detailed analysis of potential climate impacts, including rising
sea levels, ocean acidification, and human migration.<br>
A discussion of the potential impacts to the fossil fuel sector
itself, including legislation, changing public sentiment, and
infrastructure vulnerabilities. Shell concludes that active
engagement from the energy sector is desirable.<br>
A cautious response to uncertainty in scientific models, pressing
for sincere consideration of solutions even in the face of
existing debates.<br>
A warning to take policy action early, even before major changes
are observed to the climate.<br>
</blockquote>
In short, by 1988 Shell was not only aware of the potential threats
posed by climate change, it was open about its own role in creating
the conditions for a warming world. Similar documents by ExxonMobil,
oil trade associations, and utility companies have emerged in recent
years, though this Shell document is a rare, early, and concrete
accounting of climate responsibility by an oil major.<br>
However, by the time the global warming becomes detectable it could
be too late to take effective countermeasures to reduce the effects
or even to stabilize the situation. (p. 4) <br>
