<b>'It's like I'm in hell': how it feels to flee a wildfire outside
Los Angeles</b><br>
As the Tick fire rages, some residents take a stoic view of the
perpetual threat. Others wonder if it's time to move on...<br>

The Tick fire was one of several major fires threatening California
this week, as high temperatures and dangerous winds have created
hazards up and down the state, leading to mass evacuations and
preventive power shutdowns.<br>
<br>
"It has become normal for us," said Brenda Taylor, 46, who estimated
that her family has had to evacuate eight or nine times due to fires
in the last two decades. Holding her two small, barking dogs at the
evacuation center, she said she had developed a routine when
fleeing: grab photos of her children, their college diplomas, awards
and other sentimental items. "This is life out here," she said...<br>

While the fire got very close, Lindsey said he wasn't worried: "This
is our climate … I'm a California native. I've been through fires."<br>
<br>
The cause of the fire was unknown.<br>

Sharell Cerda, a 57-year-old nurse, evacuated with her family and
six dogs: "We have everything that's important to us here right now.
Everything else can be replaced."<br>
<br>
Her daughter Hunter, 26, added that even if their home survived, she
knew this wouldn't be the last time they went through this: "We are
for sure going to catch fire again."<br>

Thursday. The footage showed the Ibarra family loading belongings
into their car, before another man nearby warned residents to
evacuate. Ben Ibarra told Reuters in a message that his family had
safely evacuated to a hotel while he remained behind to keep an eye

<b>15 Canadian Kids Sue Their Government for Failing to Address
Climate Change</b><br>
The young plaintiffs are already dealing with effects of wildfires,
flooding and thawing permafrost. They say the government is
contributing to the climate crisis.<br>
Fifteen children and teenagers from across Canada sued their
government on Friday for supporting fossil fuels that drive climate
change, which they say is jeopardizing their rights as Canadian
citizens.<br>
<br>
The lawsuit, filed in federal court in Vancouver, is the latest from
young climate advocates around the globe who are increasingly
leading public protests and filing legal challenges to make their
concerns about their future in a warming world heard.<br>
<br>
"The federal government is knowingly contributing to the climate
crisis by continuing to support and promote fossil fuels and through
that they are violating our charter rights," said Sierra Robinson,
17, a youth climate activist and plaintiff in the case from
Vancouver Island, Canada. <br>
<br>
"Our natural resources are at risk because of climate change, and as
a young person my rights are being violated disproportionately
compared to older generations," she said. "Since we can't vote, we
have to seek protection from the courts."<br>
The lawsuit, La Rose v. Her Majesty the Queen--named for one of the
plaintiffs and the Queen of England, Canada's official head of
state--alleges that the Canadian government "causes, allows, and
contributes to dangerous levels" of greenhouse gas emissions. The
suit claims the government is therefore responsible for the effects
of climate change that the youth are experiencing, including air
quality and health issues related to wildfires, increased flooding,
thawing permafrost and sea level rise.<br>
<br>
It's similar to a lawsuit brought by young Americans who allege the
U.S. government is violating their constitutional rights by failing
to take action on climate change and by continuing to subsidize
fossil fuels. Both cases are based on a legal principle called the
public trust doctrine, a concept that certain natural resources are
preserved for public use, and that the government has an obligation
to protect those resources. But there are some distinct differences
when it comes to legal precedents.<br>
<br>
"I think in many ways the issues in this case in Canada are issues
that have not been grappled with or addressed to the same extent as
they have in the U.S.," said Chris Tollefson, a law professor at the
University of Victoria and one of the lawyers representing the
Canadian plaintiffs....<br>

<b>Climate change impacts on health</b><br>
The 2009 UCL-Lancet Commission stated that "climate change is the
biggest global health threat of the 21st century". The impacts of
climate change on human health and well-being are being felt today.
These effects are both direct – through extreme weather events, food
and water insecurity and infectious diseases – and indirect –
through economic instability, migration and as a driver of conflict.
Rigorous epidemiological research carried out by the WHO has
demonstrated that even the relatively modest warming seen between
1970 and 2004 resulted in detectable effects on human health, with
an estimated 140,000 extra deaths per year attributable to climate
change at this time. A more recent analysis suggests that as many as
400,000 deaths are attributable to climate change in 2010, with a
significant increase in this figure expected by 2030.<br>
<br>
In each case, the pathway(s) through which health is affected by
climate change has multiple dimensions, many of them social and
economic, and peoples' and communities' "adaptive capacity" is
crucial in determining the extent of the impact of present and
future climate change on their health. This is largely why the
distribution of these health effects is so inequitable, often
affecting children, women, and those in low-income countries
disproportionately.<br>
<br>
In this regard, climate change acts as a 'force multiplier',
exacerbating many of the world's global health challenges. Urgent
and sustained emissions reductions, as well as effective adaptation,
are needed to reduce these impacts.<br>

<b>Tree canopies and new pavement: LA officials try to keep streets

outfitted with cool pavement, new trees and shade for bus benches.
It's part of the City of LA's project to cool down neighborhoods.<br>

The City of Los Angeles expects the number of 95 degree days to
double for many neighborhoods over the next couple of decades.
Underserved communities will feel the impact of that temperature
rise the most. To help adapt to the changing climate, city officials
are rolling out a comprehensive plan to cool down the most paved
parts of LA's urban jungle. It includes planting more trees,
building shade for bus benches, and painting asphalt streets with a
"cool pavement" finish. Will these steps make a real impact?<br>
