Dizzying pace of Biden's climate action sounds death knell for
era of denialism
- -
The dizzying list of actions demonstrated the breadth and depth of
the climate crisis. Biden’s administration will spur new
climate-friendly policies for farmers while also devoting resources
to the urban communities, typically low-income people of color,
disproportionally blighted by pollution from nearby highways and
power plants. In all, 21 federal agencies will be part of a new,
overarching climate body. “This isn’t time for small measures,”
Biden said. “We need to be bold.”

The first 10 days of Biden’s presidency have represented a startling
handbrake turn from Donald Trump’s term, where climate science was
routinely disparaged or sidelined and policies to cut planet-heating
emissions were jettisoned. A complete rewiring of the economy is now
needed to avert what the president calls an “existential threat” to
civilization. US emissions dropped by about 10% last year but only
because of pandemic shutdowns, and similar cuts will be required
each year. “We can’t wait any longer – we see it with our own eyes,
we feel it in our bones,” Biden implored.

“It truly is a new day for climate action,” said Carol Browner,
former administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency under
President Bill Clinton. “President Joe Biden is taking unprecedented
actions and sending an unmistakable message to the world that the
United States is back and serious about tackling the climate
crisis.”...
- -
The Trump years may well have been the death rattle of influential
denialism. The American public’s concern over the climate crisis is
at record levels, with even a majority of Republican voters
supporting government intervention in the wake of a year of
unprecedented wildfires and hurricanes that cost hundreds of lives
and tens of billions of dollars. The question is now whether the US
is able to change quickly enough to avert further disaster, rather
than if it will change at all...
How The U.S. Can Build A 100% Clean Grid
Jan 27, 2021
CNBC
The U.S. electric grid is outdated. Designed for a world that runs
on fossil fuels, our grid needs some major tech upgrades in order to
transition to a more distributed, all-renewable system. That means
smart, internet connected hardware working in tandem with advanced
data analytics software to ensure that supply and demand are
balanced, even when the sun isn’t shining or the wind isn’t blowing.
Biden Passes the Climate Test, Short and Sweet
POSTED BY PETER CARTER ON JANUARY 28, 2021
This is a short blog on the greatest climate news.
President Biden of the United States has acted on planet-wrecking
fossil fuel subsidies, with an executive order directing federal
agencies to eliminate fossil fuel subsidies as consistent with
applicable law, and he will bring up this crime of all time with the
US Congress.

Biden is wisely taking a “whole of government approach” on climate
and his orders make climate change a national security and foreign
policy priority.
The Green Future Index
The Green Future Index is a ranking of 76 leading countries and
territories on their progress and commitment toward building a low
carbon future. It measures the degree to which their economies are
pivoting toward clean energy, industry, agriculture, and society
through investment in renewables, innovation, and green finance.
Overall rankings
The overall rankings tab shows the performance of the examined
economies relative to each other and aggregates scores generated
across the following five pillars: Carbon emissions, Energy
transition, Green society, Clean innovation and Climate policy.
- -
The rankings show business leaders, policymakers, and societies
whether their country is making the right investments in building a
green future and whether it is likely to emerge as a green leader or
a laggard in tackling humanity’s greatest challenge—the global
climate emergency.

The index is weighted toward trends and future-looking indicators
that show whether an economy is moving in the right direction. This
recognizes the efforts that more industrialized economies are making
to pivot and decarbonize. Smaller, less developed economies are
recognized for their commitment to embrace renewable technologies
and drive economic development without the previously accompanying
environmental footprint.

Climate policy is the most significant pillar in the index
methodology. It measures state-level activities and overall policies
aimed at reducing greenhouse gases, as well as the degree to which
pandemic recovery stimulus programs will be oriented toward
sustainable projects and promoting carbon neutral practices.

This last point is significant, for the green future of every nation
will not only be determined by the speed and precision with which
each reduces its own carbon footprint, but by the steps it takes to
make its economy more robust and resilient through sustainable
activity and policy. Just as a biodiverse ecosystem cultivates
stability and resilience through a complex network of adaptive
species, a green economy is powered by multiple sources of renewable
energy, a low-carbon food industry, clean transport and industry,
and a flexible, responsive, and innovative society.
