<b>Under a White Sky by Elizabeth Kolbert review – the path to
catastrophe</b><br>
Ben Ehrenreich - Fri 26 Mar 2021<br>
A damning survey, drawing on skilful and subtle reporting, that
tracks the spiralling absurdity of human attempts to control nature
with technology...<br>
<br>
Kolbert’s most recent book evokes another disquieting sensation, a
novel breed of vertigo. In Under a White Sky, she tracks the
spiralling absurdity of human attempts to control nature with
technology. Grand, Promethean interventions of the sort of which
modernity’s boosters were once so proud – a river’s flow reversed to
carry waste to a more convenient location, an aquifer tapped to grow
alfalfa in the desert, coal and oil extracted from great depths and
burned to move machines – spawn unforeseen disasters. Ever grander
interventions ensue, which bring fresh calamities, which require
still cleverer interventions. By the end of the book, as the zany
twists into the full-on apocalyptic, you are left reeling, with
little hope to spare...<br>
Little wonder then that when Kolbert asks what alternative there is
to this vortex of disaster, she, like her subjects, can imagine only
additional technological fixes. The possibility of social change has
been excluded from the start.<br>

<b>Sonia Seneviratne: Effects of land hydrology on atmospheric
processes and climate change</b><br>
Nov 20, 2014<br>
usaskgiws<br>
November 19, 2014 - Dr. Sonia Seneviratne, ETH Zurich:<br>
"Effects of land hydrology on atmospheric processes and climate
change"<br>
Land hydrology is tightly coupled to the atmosphere through two-way
feedbacks (Seneviratne et al. 2010). In particular, soil moisture
availability constrains plant transpiration and photosynthesis in
several regions of the world, with consequent impacts on the water,
energy and biogeochemical cycles. Moreover it is a storage component
for precipitation and radiation anomalies, inducing persistence in
the climate system. This presentation will provide an overview of
these main interactions between land hydrology and climate, in
particular in the context of climate change.<br>

About<br>
The Women and Water Lecture Series, hosted by the Global Institute
for Water Security, Global Water Futures - Young Professionals and
Global Water Futures, will occur monthly from January to April. The
series will showcase research, support young professionals and
provide a space for dialogue and networking. Additionally, the
series will explore water-related challenges, roles of women in
water, gendered water-related impacts, women researchers in water,
and challenges and opportunities facing female water researchers.<br>

<b>Greta Thunberg Deadpan-Trolls Critics With Response To Shrinking
Penises Report</b><br>
“Greta Thunberg, best sniper on the net,” one person responded on
Twitter to the teen climate activist’s post.<br>
Greta Thunberg showed once again that she’s a master of throwing
subtle shade with her response to a scientific report linking
pollution to the shrinking of human penises.<br>
<br>
“See you all at the next climate strike,” the Swedish teenage
climate activist wrote, quote-tweeting a news story covering the
findings on Thursday:<br>
The 18-year-old campaigner is frequently attacked by
climate-change-denying men ― including ex-U.S. President Donald
Trump and his followers ― and it was this demographic that
Thunberg’s supporters interpreted as the target of her ding. <br>
<br>
“This will get the men on board! Finally, something they care
about!” responded one person on Twitter.<br>
<br>
Added another: “Greta Thunberg, best sniper on the net.”<br>

<b>Webinar: Identifying and crafting narrative themes</b><br>
Mar 23, 2021<br>
AGU<br>
Stories are more than tales shared around a bonfire. They are an
integral part of our everyday communication. And in every story,
there's an underlying narrative theme (or themes).<br>
<br>
In part two of our three-part Sharing Science webinar miniseries
on what makes a story (part one here), learn how to build on the
basic structure of a story to identify the best narrative theme(s)
for your science, which will make your stories compelling and
memorable.<br>

<b>David Cross: Why America Sucks at Everything</b><br>
Mar 12, 2021<br>
The Gravel Institute<br>
America: the greatest, richest, freest country in the world – or is
it? David Cross, of Mr. Show, Arrested Development, and The Dark
Divide, joins us to discuss why Americans, despite living in the
wealthiest country in the history of the world, have a much worse
standard of living than people who live in poorer countries. The
"American Dream" isn't just dying: it's dead and buried. Cross tells
us why.<br>
