[Great replacement for combustion energy from heat and cold]
Stirling Heat Engine to Stirling Heat Pump : How is it done?
Apr 11, 2021
Just Have a Think
Stirling engines have been around since the nineteenth century. They
are an elegantly simple way of generating power using temperature
differentials, but nobody ever found a way to make them efficient
enough for wide scale use. Now a UK company has developed a heat
pump system based on the principles of the Stirling Engine, but with
some ingenious adaptations, using no HFC refrigeration gases and
with a 30% saving in energy costs compared to existing systems.
Extinction Rebellion
Mayer Hillman in conversation with Extinction Rebellion activists
Clare Farrell, La Pethick, Becky Plenderleith and Jill Lewis.
Recorded in February 2021

Our guest Mayer Hillman was engaged in social science research at
Policy Studies Institute from 1970, latterly as Senior Fellow
Emeritus. Most recently, he has been attached to the University of
Westminster ‑ in total, a period of over 50 years. Previous to that,
he was, for 13 years, a British architect and town planner. He is a
father and a grandfather.
https://mayerhillman.com/

La Pethick is a grandmother and an arrestee from the south east
coast She has five beloved grandchildren and believes she has a
biological imperative to do all in her power to protect them and,
therefore, all future generations from the effects of climate
change, now and to come. She thinks we all need to be courageous in
action, determined of mind and have love in our hearts.

Jill Lewis is a grandmother from the south west who, as a member of
the Ground Elders, helped secure Waterloo bridge in 2019.

Bex Plenderleith is a mum of 3. Pre-children, she had few morals and
worked as an advertising copywriter before giving that up to write
jokes and silly books. Post-children, Bex raised lots of money as a
community fund-raiser. After April 2019 and Waterloo Bridge, Bex had
an avalanche of morals and now works full-time for Extinction
Rebellion. Bex used to be very quiet. Not any more.

Clare Farrell is not a parent and has no parents... is a co-founder
of XR, which is a bit like having a massive chaotic family.
[Scholarly discussion of the Middle East future- video]
Climate Change and Global Warming Related to the Middle East
Apr 9, 2021
Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs

Wael Al-Delaimy is Professor of Public Health and Associate Director
of the Institute for Public Health at the University of California
San Diego and the Chair of the Board of Directors for the Society
for Advancement of Science and Technology in the Arab World. He is
also the current Chair of the Eastern Mediterranean Chapter of the
International Society for Environmental Epidemiology. A native of
Iraq where he finished his medical degree and a graduate diploma in
community medicine, he obtained his PhD in Epidemiology from New
Zealand, finished post-doc training at Harvard School of Public
Health, was a scientist with the International Agency for Research
on Cancer, before becoming a faculty at the University of California
San Diego. His recent research focus has been on climate change
health impacts, and global mental health. His book that he edited
with colleagues, titled Health of People, Health of Planet and Our
Responsibility was published May 2020 by Springer Nature and reached
a record milestone of more than 230,000 downloads.

His talk will focus on climate change health impacts in the Middle
East and North Africa (MENA) Region, which was the title of a
chapter in the above book. The climate change impacts are going to
be felt in the MENA region most severely and most early compared to
other regions. Yet there is limited data, research, policies, and
preparation by the population of the region and their governments.
The talk will highlight the risks and the need for regional
cooperation to develop adaptation and mitigation initiatives to
lessen the impact on an already volatile region in the middle of
ongoing conflicts.
A collaboration between the Center for Middle East Studies and the
Climate Solutions Lab.
Second Largest Oil Spill in US History Gets No Coverage
Apr 7, 2021
Redacted Tonight
Naomi Karavani reports on the second largest oil spill in US
history. The North Carolina oil spill went undetected until 2 teens
stumbled upon it by accident. The company responsible for the spill
already had a terrible safety record and managed to keep the story
fairly quiet despite the scale of the problem.
Monday numbers: NC hit by the biggest gasoline spill in the U.S.
this century
By Lisa Sorg - 1/25/2021
When Colonial Pipeline initially estimated it had spilled 63,000
gallons of gasoline from a ruptured pipeline in Huntersville last
August, that sounded like a lot, about twice the amount in a
backyard swimming pool. Now, five months after the disaster, town
residents’ fears have come true: At 1.2 million gallons, the
accident was the largest individual gasoline spill in U.S. history
since at least 2000. To illustrate how many gallons escaped from the
pipeline, the “Giant Peach” water tower in Gaffney, S.C., holds 1
million gallons of water.

This was not Colonial’s first spill in North Carolina, according to
federal pipeline accident data. In fact, it was the company’s 32nd
reported spill in the past 20 years. (There have been no fatalities
or injuries attributed to these accidents.) The other major gasoline
pipeline company in North Carolina is Plantation; it had one large
spill in 2003, which accounts for most of its total in this centur
