With the El Niño Southern Oscillation expected to flip from La Niña
to El Niño this year, climate scientists are concerned 2023 will be
even warmer. All of this is occurring with a backdrop of a
consistently warmer climate, and this climate change means more
extreme drought but also more extreme wet periods.
Longer growing seasons and more pollen spell misery for millions.
APRIL 19, 2023...
- -
When spring arrives, as many as 81 million Americans
experience seasonal allergies. And as the planet warms and more
carbon dioxide is pumped into the atmosphere, climate change is
lengthening pollen seasons and making them more severe.

Worsening allergies are “a really clear example of how climate
change is impacting us now, every spring, in every breath that we
take. This is climate change in our own backyards, in our own towns
and cities. It’s not future generations or other countries or future
decades,” said William Anderegg, an associate professor at the
University of Utah who has studied the impact of climate change on
pollen seasons in North America.

This increased exposure to pollen is particularly dangerous for
children, people with asthma, and people who live in areas with high
levels of air pollution. According to the Centers for Disease
Control, Americans spend over $3 billion on medical costs linked to
pollen, with nearly half of those costs coming from prescription
medication.
PBS NewsHour
New research shows that the massive ice sheets at the top and bottom
of our planet are shrinking much faster than previously thought. The
international study compiled satellite measurements over time and
depict what one researcher described as a "devastating trajectory."
William Brangham discussed the implications of the analysis with
Twila Moon of the National Snow and Ice Data Center.
Sargassum, a yellowish-brown seaweed, drifting in the Atlantic
Ocean last month — a record for the month of March...
- -
Tangles of the goopy, leafy seaweed have
already begun to wash ashore beaches in southern Florida and
Mexico. In the coming months, they could start emitting a rotting
stench as they decay, potentially posing health risks to
beachgoers.

Floating mats of seaweed accumulate in the central Atlantic Ocean
for much of the year. But during the spring and summer, patches of
it are carried by ocean currents toward the Caribbean, eastern
Florida and elsewhere along the Gulf Coast.

It’s hard to predict how much will creep onto beaches in the
coming months, but the right combination of ocean currents and
wind conditions could push a lot of it ashore, experts said.

Some parts of the Florida Keys have already seen unusually large
amounts of seaweed for this time of year, said Brian Lapointe, a
research professor at Florida Atlantic University who has studied
Sargassum for most of his career.

“I was amazed at what I saw driving along the Overseas Highway,”
he said, referring to the main road that runs through the Keys...
- -
As the Sargassum washes ashore and
begins to decompose, it degrades the water quality and pollutes
beaches, scientists say. The decaying algae releases ammonia and
hydrogen sulfide, which has an unpleasant odor like rotten eggs
and can irritate the eyes, nose and throat.

Some Caribbean islands have seen huge amounts of the brown algae
inundate beaches during Sargassum season, posing worrisome
respiratory health risks to residents exposed to the hydrogen
sulfide, according to a 2018 study.
The mass, known as the great Atlantic Sargassum
belt, is drifting toward the Gulf of Mexico. Scientists say
seaweed is likely to come ashore by summer to create a rotting,
stinking, scourge...
- -
Last summer, the U.S. Virgin Islands declared a
state of emergency, after “unusually high amounts” of sargassum
piled up on its shores, affecting a desalination plant on the
island of St. Croix. And in 2018, after a mass bloom that sprawled
across about 5,500 miles in the Atlantic Ocean, doctors on the
Caribbean islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique reported thousands
of cases of “acute” exposure to hydrogen sulfide, according to a
study published that year.

In the past, besieged beach towns have turned to various measures
to rid themselves of sargassum: In Mexico, the navy has been
recruited to scoop the seaweed from the ocean, and rake the
country’s beaches. Meanwhile, some entrepreneurs have proposed
transforming the seaweed into animal feed, fuel or construction
materials.

But Dr. Lapointe, the research professor, warned that anyone
experimenting with new uses for the seaweed should exercise
extreme caution: sargassum contains arsenic, which, if used in
fertilizer, could potentially make its way up the food chain.

The most immediate threat, however, is to tourism. “It’s having
catastrophic effects,” he said.
EEI (Earth Energy Imbalance) is the single most important
Metric to know to understand Earth warming
Paul Beckwith
Apr 19, 2023
The Earth Energy Imbalance is simply (Energy In) to the Earth
system minus (Energy Out). As long as it is positive, Earth warms,
when it is zero Earth stabilizes, and when it is negative Earth
cools.

Between 1961 and 2020, EEI was about 0.48 Watts per square meter.
Between 2006 and 2020, it was much higher, being 0.76 W/m**2.

Politicians, company CEOs, decision makers, policy makers, and the
general public must learn these basic facts of EEI, and know that
their efforts are futile until the EEI is reduced to zero, and
even temporarily below to restore our planetary capacity to
support life, including that of humans.
