<i>[ Wildfires starting -- BBC reports ]</i><br>
<b>Thousands evacuate as Nova Scotia fights wildfires</b><br>
May 29, 2023<br>
Wildfires in the Atlantic Canadian province of Nova Scotia have
destroyed homes and caused thousands of people to evacuate.<br>
<br>
As of Monday, around 16,400 people have been forced to leave their
homes near Halifax, Nova Scotia's largest city.<br>
<br>
The region has seen over 100 more wildfires than last year, fuelled
by drier than normal conditions.<br>
<br>
Evacuation orders have also been issued in British Columbia as fires
continue to blaze in the country's west.<br>
<br>
In a tweet on Monday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called the fires
in Nova Scotia "incredibly serious" and said his government is on
standby to offer assistance if needed.<br>
<br>
A total of six wildfires were burning in Nova Scotia as of Monday
afternoon - one of which is estimated to cover 788 hectares
northwest of Halifax, according to the Nova Scotia Department of
Natural Resources.<br>
<br>
Halifax fire deputy chief Dave Meldrum told reporters that the
fast-moving fire is "ongoing and still not under control".<br>
<br>
The blaze led officials to declare a local state of emergency in
Halifax late on Sunday...<br>

Reuters<br>
May 29, 2023<br>
BEIJING, May 29 (Reuters) - Shanghai saw its hottest day in May for
more than 100 years on Monday with temperatures hitting 36.1 degrees
Celsius (97 degrees Fahrenheit), continuing a brutal trend of
unusually hot weather in the country since March.<br>
<br>
Several southern Chinese provinces are expected to swelter under
extreme heat over the next few days and weather experts have already
predicted another blistering summer, a repeat of last year's
record-breaking more than two-month stretch...<br>

The China Meteorological Administration said that in the period to
Wednesday most of southern China, including Guizhou, Yunnan and
Sichuan provinces, will see temperatures rise above 35 degrees
Celsius, with some areas reaching 37 to 39 degrees Celsius...<br>

<br>
In this ClimateGenn episode I am speaking with Dr Jennifer Francis,
a senior scientist at the Woods Hole Climate Research Center, in the
US. 2023 has already seen record breaking temperatures in the
atmosphere, land and oceans, with horrific impacts to human life,
communities and ecology.<br>
<br>
Here we focus on three factors in the climate system that drive
these extremes and are still set to break more records, creating a
great deal more destruction this year. We focus on the forming El
Niño climate phenomenon, as well as ocean heatwaves, impacting the
Atlantic and the North Pacific.<br>
<br>
Finally, we also discuss the role of the thinning sea ice that is
accelerating change in the Arctic region. These changes drive up
heat in the Arctic faster, impacting ecosystems and altering the jet
stream, these latter impacts being the focus of Dr Francis’s
research for over a decade. <br>

</font><font face="Calibri">"In this groundbreaking analysis,
Matthew T. Huber argues that the carbon-intensive capitalist class
must be confronted with its disproportionate effect on the
climate. Yet, at present the climate movement is unpopular and
rooted in the professional class, where it remains incapable of
meeting this dizzying challenge. As an alternative, Huber proposes
a climate politics to appeal to the majority--the working
class--and he evaluates the Green New Deal as a first attempt to
channel working-class material and ecological interests. He
advocates building union power in the very energy system that must
be transformed. In the end, winning the climate struggle will
require an internationalist approach based on planetary
working-class solidarity" <br>

how both political parties are dropping the ball ]</i></font><br>
<font face="Calibri"><font size="+2"><i><b>May 30, 2013</b></i></font>
</font><br>
<font face="Calibri">May 30, 2013: In a controversial Huffington
Post article, climate scientist James Hansen suggests that neither
Republicans nor Democrats can be relied upon to combat carbon
pollution in a market-based manner.</font><br>
<blockquote><font face="Calibri"><b>The American Party</b></font><br>
<font face="Calibri">The public recognizes and is fed up with the
failure of both political parties to work for the common good.
So is it time to abandon them for a third party? Perhaps not
quite.</font><br>
<br>
<font face="Calibri">Some conservative thought leaders recognize
the merits of a carbon fee, a non-tax, 100% of collected funds
distributed to the public on per capita basis. I have mentioned
a Wall Street Journal article endorsing this approach by George
Shultz and Gary Becker, Shultz having been Secretary of State
under Reagan and Becker being a Nobel prize winning economist.
It seems worthwhile to work hard to gain support for this
approach, with expectation that conservative support would be
conditional on liberals not using any of the funds to expand
government.</font><br>
<br>
<font face="Calibri">However, it may turn out that no matter how
we try, such a rational approach cannot gain sufficient support
within any reasonable period. The rumor about DiPeso's concrete
shoes is only half facetious. Among potential supporters there
seems to be a palpable fear of ostracism if they were to endorse
a moderate conservative approach such as fee-and-dividend.</font><br>
<br>
<font face="Calibri">And yet moderation is just what most
Americans seem to want.</font><br>
<br>
<font face="Calibri">In such case, the fastest way to progress may
be a 3rd party, a centrist party. It is very possible that the
United States is ready for a centrist American Party. In 1992
Ross Perot garnered almost 20% of the votes for President. At
times he had led in the polls, but he damaged his credibility in
several ways, including his assertion that he had once seen
Martians on his front yard.</font><br>
<br>
<font face="Calibri">Compared with 1992, a much larger fraction of
the people is fed up with the failures of both major parties.
If, following the mid-term elections of 2014, there is not a
strong indication of bipartisan progress, it may be time to
consider the possibility of launching a major centrist 3rd party
effort, not only for the Presidency but for Congress as well.</font><br>
<br>
<font face="Calibri"><b>Citizens Climate Lobby</b></font><br>
<font face="Calibri">Implausible dreaming, you scoff. Not so fast.
For example, consider Citizens Climate Lobby. If you don't know
about them read today's article in the New York Times. These are
honest, hard- working people trying to educate politicians and
the public about the need for a revenue-neutral carbon fee via
op-eds, letters-to-the-editor, meetings with editorial boards,
meetings with congressional staffers, and meetings with congress
people.</font><br>
<br>
<font face="Calibri">Citizens Climate Lobby is made up largely of
volunteers, with continual training of new recruits. They have
doubled in size each year for the past several years and are
active in most states. They are positive, dedicated and
respectful, creating a good impression with congress people.</font><br>
<br>
<font face="Calibri">What is the chance that they can compete
against the well-heeled fossil fuel lobby? Hard to say. But if
they fail to move our present government by 2015, and by then
have doubled in size a few more times, they just may be a
democratic force to be reckoned with. They seek to persuade and
are unfailingly respectful and polite, but determined. So, if in
a few years the two major parties remain uncompromising and
unsupportive of a carbon fee, it would not surprise me if
Citizens Climate Lobby became a major force for a centrist third
party.</font><br>
