[ from Dr James Hansen - the wise grandfather of
global warming science - a 15 page letter ]
“A Miracle Will Occur” Is Not Sensible Climate Policy
07 December 2023
James Hansen, Pushker Kharecha, Makiko Sato
The COP28 Chairman and the United Nations Secretary General say that
the goal to
keep global warming below 1.5°C is alive, albeit barely, implying
that the looser goal
of the 2015 Paris Agreement (to keep warming well below 2°C) is
still viable. We find
that even the 2°C goal is dead if policy is limited to emission
reductions and plausible
CO2 removal. IPCC (the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change,
which advises
the UN) has understated global warming in the pipeline and
understated fossil fuel
emissions in the pipeline via lack of realism in the Integrated
Assessment Models that
IPCC uses for climate projections. Wishful thinking as a policy
approach must be
replaced by transparent climate analysis, knowledge of the forcings
that drive climate
change, and realistic assessment of policy options. The next several
years provide a
narrow window of time to define actions that could still achieve a
bright future for
today’s young people. We owe young people the knowledge and the
tools to
continually assess the situation and devise and adjust the course of
action.
With Professor Kevin Anderson Discussing Remarks By Bill gates
Nick Breeze ClimateGenn
Dec 5, 2023 ClimateGenn #podcast produced by Nick Breeze
Bill Gates has been interviewed on different occasions in the last
couple of months making bold statements about planting trees and,
more recently at COP28, how a temperature rise of 3ºC is not too
bad. This segment with climate scientist, Professor Kevin Anderson
from the Tyndall Centre at University of Manchester and also at the
University of Uppsala, reflects on Bill Gates and people like him,
asking why they get so much media coverage considering the accuracy
of what they say.
Multiple Threats to Polar Oceans
International Cryosphere Climate Initiative
Dec 8, 2023
The Arctic and Southern Oceans are crucial components of the Earth
system. Their unique ecosystems are under serious threat from
warming, acidification, freshening and ice loss. Polar oceans
already experience changes in chemistry, and continued warming is
leading to range shifts, changes in food webs, ecosystems,
fisheries, and climate regulation. This session highlights the
latest scientific and discusses the wider societal and political
impacts, while emphasizing the need to raise ambition for reducing
emissions. It will particularly highlight, where possible latest
science that demonstrates the need to stick to 1.5°C.
The tough reality of Carbon Capture & Storage #cop28
ClimateAdam
Dec 8, 2023
Depending who you ask, carbon capture and storage (CCS) might seem
like a vital fix to climate change, or a dangerous distraction from
the hard work we need to do decarbonising - from protecting nature
to building renewables. But when it comes to tackling climate
change, there are no simple truths - carbon capture and storage is
both hero and villain of our fight against global warming...
