A new study says that climate change will make big parts of the
world uninhabitable much faster than expected. And I think they’re
making a very good point.
A physiological approach for assessing human survivability and
liveability to heat in a changing climate

Abstract
Most studies projecting human survivability limits to extreme heat
with climate change use a 35 °C wet-bulb temperature (Tw)
threshold without integrating variations in human physiology. This
study applies physiological and biophysical principles for young
and older adults, in sun or shade, to improve current estimates of
survivability and introduce liveability (maximum safe, sustained
activity) under current and future climates. Our physiology-based
survival limits show a vast underestimation of risks by the 35 °C
Tw model in hot-dry conditions. Updated survivability limits
correspond to Tw~25.8–34.1 °C (young) and ~21.9–33.7 °C
(old)—0.9–13.1 °C lower than Tw = 35 °C. For older female adults,
estimates are ~7.2–13.1 °C lower than 35 °C in dry conditions.
Liveability declines with sun exposure and humidity, yet most
dramatically with age (2.5–3.0 METs lower for older adults).
Reductions in safe activity for younger and older adults between
the present and future indicate a stronger impact from aging than
warming.

Introduction
Adverse health impacts of extreme heat exposure are expected to rise
globally due to a warming climate, urban-induced warming, and a
growing and aging population... The concerns for human health,
productivity, and well-being are greater in humid climates and for
vulnerable populations..., such as older adults, unhoused, and/or
those with chronic diseases. Therefore, robust models to assess
current heat-health impacts and project future risks must
incorporate specific vulnerabilities and diverse environmental
contexts....
PLEASE NOTE: 1) Every time I show a photo of a cement plant belching
out carbon dioxide, people write comments saying that the photo is
‘wrong’ because that thick white smoke is not CO2. Thanks, it's not,
but the CO2 is still there. It's just that you can’t see it. Cement
plants are among the biggest CO2 emitters on the planet.
I’m sure this won’t be read by at least one person who'll post a
message saying the photo is somehow an ‘error.’ If you’ve read this
far before posting, at least it won’t be you.

2) “Taking the mickey” is a British-Irish expression meaning to make
fun of someone or (in this context) to treat someone as an idiot and
try to fool him with an absurd claim. Similar to ‘take the piss,’
‘extract the Michael’ or ‘pull my leg.’
It probably comes from ‘Mickey Bliss,’ cockney rhyming slang for
‘piss.’ Cockney rhyming slang is… well, that will take way too long
to explain!
Pakistan uses artificial rain to combat smog
Artificial rain was used for the first time in Pakistan on Saturday
in a bid to combat hazardous levels of smog in the megacity of
Lahore, the provincial government said.
Issued on: 16/12/2023
By: NEWS WIRES
In the first experiment of its kind in the South Asian country,
planes equipped with cloud seeding equipment flew over 10 areas of
the city, often ranked one of the worst places globally for air
pollution.

The "gift" was provided by the United Arab Emirates, said caretaker
chief minister of Punjab, Mohsin Naqvi.

"Teams from the UAE, along with two planes, arrived here about 10 to
12 days ago. They used 48 flares to create the rain," he told media.

He said the team would know by Saturday night what effect the
"artificial rain" had.

The UAE has increasingly using cloud seeding, sometimes referred to
as artificial rain or blueskying, to create rain in the arid expanse
of the country.

The weather modification involves releasing common salt -- or a
mixture of different salts -- into clouds.

The crystals encourage condensation to form as rain.

It has been deployed in dozens of countries, including the United
States, China and India.

Even very modest rain is effective in bringing down pollution,
experts say.

Air pollution has worsened in Pakistan in recent years, as a mixture
of low-grade diesel fumes, smoke from seasonal crop burn off and
colder winter temperatures coalesce into stagnant clouds of smog.

Lahore suffers the most from the toxic smog, choking the lungs of
more than 11 million residents in Lahore during the winter season.

Levels of PM2.5 pollutants -- cancer-causing microparticles that
enter the bloodstream through the lungs -- were measured as
hazardous in Lahore on Saturday at more than66 times the World
Health Organization's danger limits.
Breathing the poisonous air has catastrophic health consequences.

Prolonged exposure can trigger strokes, heart disease, lung cancer
and respiratory diseases, according to the WHO.

Successive governments have used various methods to reduce air
pollution in Lahore, including spraying water on the roads, and
weekend shutdowns of schools, factories and markets, with little or
no success.

When asked about a long-term strategy to combat smog, the chief
minister said the government needs studies to formulate a plan.
In this Our Changing Climate climate change video essay, I look at
how fossil fuel extraction and capital accumulation intertwine
into fossil capital. Specifically, I look at the accumulation of
capital throughout the industrial world has always been
underpinned by fossil fuel emissions. Today, in the age of
imperialism, fossil fuels and carbon emissions have facilitated
the hyper-exploitation of workers globally, all in the name of
profits and capital accumulation. The end result of this
relationship is climate change and massive emissions output.
