Ecological Overshoot Speaker Series Part 1: Dr. Bill Rees
blueislandgirl
Nov 14, 2023
Dr. Rees introduces the concepts of Earth’s carrying capacity and
ecological overshoot, and the many environmental problems that are
symptoms of this overshoot. We humans tend to fixate on a few major
problems (war, pandemic, climate change) and have a difficult time
connecting the dots—that is, thinking systemically. Bill talks about
the implications of our failure to think systemically, and what it
means for the future of our communities and for life on Earth.

Dr. William E. Rees is a population ecologist, ecological economist,
Professor Emeritus and former Director of the University of British
Columbia’s School of Community and Regional Planning in Vancouver,
Canada. He is also a founding member and former President of the
Canadian Society for Ecological Economics; a founding Director of
the OneEarth Living Initiative; a Fellow of the Post-Carbon
Institute and an Associate Fellow of the Great Transition
Initiative.
Ecological Overshoot Speaker Series Part 2: Dr. Jeremy Jiménez
blueislandgirl
Nov 28, 2023
In Part 2 of our series on ecological overshoot, Jeremy Jiménez
introduced us to the environmental issues we should be talking about
besides climate change, and why we really need to be talking about
them. Mainstream media and governments are focusing almost
exclusively on climate change, because its impacts are readily
observed, because it's more easily measured, and because the focus
on climate invites the kinds of “solutions” that don’t ask us to
change our way of life much if any at all. Jeremy shows why this is
a mistake, and asks: which team are we on: Team Modern Civilization?
Or Team Community of Life?

Part 2 of our ecological overshoot series is presented by Dr. Jeremy
Jiménez. Jeremy is an Associate Professor in the Foundations and
Social Advocacy Department at SUNY Cortland. He received his
doctorate in International and Comparative Education at Stanford
University in 2017. He currently publishes and teaches future
teacher candidates about race, class, gender, international, and
ecological issues, increasingly from indigenous perspectives. Having
studied, taught, worked, and traveled through over 150 countries in
the world, these days he prefers to stay grounded, eating the weeds
alongside the squirrels and rabbits in his garden.
Ecological Overshoot Speaker Series Part 3: Max Wilbert
blueislandgirl
Dec 12, 2023
In Part 3 of our series on ecological overshoot, Max Wilbert spoke
about the new frontiers of resource extraction driven by growth in
renewable energy and energy storage—the so-called “solutions” to
climate change—and the resulting increase in demand for raw
materials like lithium. Max shared his thoughts from his study of
resistance movements, and described his own resistance work to
protect the land from extraction and commodification, including
co-founding and launching a protest movement to “Protect Thacker
Pass”.

Max Wilbert is a writer and biocentric community organizer. He has
been part of grassroots political work for 20 years, and is the
co-founder of Protect Thacker Pass, a campaign to protect the
natural communities in Thacker Pass Nevada from a massive lithium
mine.

While Protect Thacker Pass failed to stop mine construction, the
campaign has been incredibly successful at engaging a broad
coalition of people in a deeper understanding of how lithium mining
destroys the land. Max and the Protect Thacker Pass team continue to
work with regional tribes to educate the public about the harms of
lithium mining.

Max is the author of two books, most recently “Bright Green Lies:
How The Environmental Movement Lost Its Way and What We Can Do About
It”.
[ Shipping blocked by drought -- rain needed for the Panama

Why the Panama Canal is Stuck
Hindsight
Dec 1, 2023 #PanamaCanal #Documentary
The capacity of the Panama Canal is reduced by 50%, and some ships
need to offload over half their cargo. As the worst drought in
recorded history lowers the water levels of Gatun Lake, the
administrators are forced to lower the number of transits. Is this
the beginning of the end for the Panama Canal?
