A step-by-step is a bit tricky, but I can offer some advice.
You can use the YS1 with either something like GRC ( Gnu Radio Companion ) or RFCat. I'd definitely recommend going through the GSG lessons, they are pretty easy and a lot of it will apply to the YS1, these can be found at https://greatscottgadgets.com/sdr/
Most likely you are going to start off using the YS1 with rfcat (I have no idea on what case is preferred), a really nice way to work with the device via Python. I'd suggest you go through the author of RFCat's talk: https://bitbucket.org/atlas0fd00m/rfcat/downloads/ (the files called subghzorbust-bhwkshp.pdf ). This should also give you a lot of background on it.
If you want something to play with you can take a look at a really simplistic writeup I did on hacking fixed key remotes at http://andrewmohawk.com/2015/08/31/hacking-fixed-key-remotes-with-only-rfcat/
If you need a device to play with I recommend going to your local electronics store (either in person, or online) and grab a cheap DIY remote-relay kit, its basically a remote and when you press the button it clicks over a relay. You can then attach that relay to a light source ( or whatever you feel like ) and try and look at how you could replay the remote to do it without someone actually pressing it.
Other than that there are loads of people who have done simple stuff you can follow along with and get your toes wet with this hardware.

Ditto that , I am new to the rf world, familiar with Linux though. Maybe I bit off more than I can chew.
Thanks,Dennis
