[YARDStick] how to get started

Got a new YS1 from amazon.  plug it into my laptop and it doesn't 
enumerate on the bus.

so of course rfcat -r says NO DONGLE FOUND.  The dongle has a solid red 
light and a weaker but solid amber light.  I thought this thing came 
with firmware already on it?

running on dell laptop, ubuntu 18.04
