About EliotOnline

The intention is that this list will be a forum for people wishing to talk about town issues, as well as local and regional efforts to build a more sustainable, just, and compassionate society.

Also, if you have a service to offer, a performance or exhibit to announce, wish to form an affinity group, find service providers or like-minded folk, engage in community-building or otherwise improve the quality of life in our fair town... let this be a place for you.

WHY THIS LIST?

How many of us would like to be more involved in town affairs, to take advantage of the participatory democracy we have here, but keep missing opportunities? This list can be an alternate forum for issues, as well as a resource to help get or stay involved in events offline.

Email newslists are one of the brightest spots on the internet, offering information and community for people from all corners of the world, as well as those right next door. While not everyone is connected to the internet, more people are every day, and this list will hopefully provide another good reason to get and stay connected.

While there are a bewildering (and wonderful!) variety of social media sites now, email newslists can have an advantage of intimacy that may be lacking in web-based groups. Everyone has every piece of the conversation delivered to their inbox, and can rest assured that what they say here is not searchable on the internet, unless a listmember copies it and republishes it elsewhere. (If you need a break from the conversation, you can change your settings to "nomail", or use your favorite finger to delete incoming messages.)

WHO MAY JOIN?

This list is intended for people who live or work in Eliot, and care about preserving our small town way of life while making improvements for future generations to enjoy. It is not intended for tourists, or developers/speculators, or marketers, or political agitators... unless they also happen to be Eliot residents. ;-)

POSTING TO ELIOTONLINE

Please introduce yourself by name the first time you post. This is a discussion among the people of Eliot, and we want to know who we are conversing with! Nicknames are fine, but anonymity is not. Note that you can just observe without announcing yourself.

CONSIDERATIONS

We've gone for over two decades without published rules. Appeals to common sense usually do the job, but a few people have had to be tossed because they didn't get the memo… or didn't listen. So, please consider the following:

• Respect people's privacy.
• If you find fit to republish anything from this list, do so thoughtfully, being respectful of the original poster.
• The more contentious your post may be, the more imperative it is that you sign your name to it.

Most importantly, have fun, and don't take yourself so seriously, already!

Note that this list is now, and will always be, a work-in-progress. Please join in...
