The 35th Jerusalem Winter School:

The Physics of Astronomical Transients

First announcement.

The school, geared towards advanced graduate students and postdocs, will
take place in Jerusalem, at the Israel Institute for Advanced Studies,
December 27, 2017 – January 5, 2018.

The application form, and further information can be found at:
_

http://www.as.huji.ac.il/content/35th-jerusalem-winter-school-theoretical-physics

Some financial aid is available for those who need it.

Registration deadline is October 1st.

Scientific motivation:
_
In the past decade, increasingly frequent surveys of large areas of sky
have discovered a wide variety of new transient phenomena, and revealed
unexpected diversity in old ones. These pose new challenges to theory,
and require changes to traditional models. The school will explore our
current physical understanding of these objects, ranging from supernovae
and thermonuclear events, through tidal disruption of stars by black
holes to
gamma-ray bursts and the variety of stellar binary mergers. The field is
poised for explosive growth over the coming decade, as new observational
facilities open.

We attach a poster. [Omitted due to size.] Feel free to distribute this
announcement throughout
your department. The School will include a visit to the old city in
Jerusalem, a trip to the Dead Sea and Masada, and other social
activities.

We hope to see you all in Jerusalem,

Sterl Phinney and Re'em Sari, Directors
