*Heat waves, productivity, and the urban economy: What are the costs?
London School of Economics and Political Science...*hot summers can have
devastating effects on worker productivity*. As temperatures increase,
workers feel decreased energy, loss of concentration, muscle cramps,
heat rash, and in extreme cases heat exhaustion or heatstroke....We find
that, in the future, costs to London’s economy in warm years could
amount to between 1.9 billion euros and 2.3 billion euros, which
represents over 0.4% of 2005 city GVA. ...Our study suggests*additional
costs due to productivity losses may also be substantial.* This is all
the more troubling when we consider that climate change means
temperatures like the ones of 19th July will become more and more
common. It is therefore vital that policy makers understand how heat
affects productivity in different urban contexts and what adaptation
measures work better.

** The WetBulb Globe Temperature (WBGT)* is a measure of the heat stress
in direct sunlight, which takes into account: temperature, humidity,
wind speed, sun angle and cloud cover (solar radiation). This differs
from the *heat index*, which takes into consideration temperature and
humidity and is calculated for shady areas. *NOAA weather map (Wet Bulb
vs Heat Index)* <http://www.srh.noaa.gov/tsa/?n=wbgt>

    *Climate*quiz for hopefuls

Hong Kong Standard (press release) -‎9 hours ago‎

A green group has posed a "climate challenge" to Legislative Council
hopefuls, and is *asking voters to pick candidates who support combating
climate change.*
... it will ask all candidates to answer 14 questions in its Fighting
Climate Crisis Survey, including whether they support the introduction
of a "carbon tax" .. They will also be asked if they want the government
to be more aggressive in cutting carbon emissions.... it was
disappointing to find most candidates did not focus on climate change.
.. "Climate change is not a political issue in Hong Kong," ... "Some
people may think 'it's no big deal, just turn on the air-conditioners'
but that will worsen the situation."

UK Prime Minster Theresa May scraps*climate change*department as
    doomsday fears grow
    <http://www.dailystar.co.uk/news/latest-news/534178/doomsday-killer-heatwaves-floods-theresa-may-axes-climate-department>

Daily Star -‎2 hours ago‎

UK Prime Minister Theresa May has axed the climate change department —
despite grim doomsday warnings KILLER heatwaves, floods, droughts could
bring Britain to its knees....And if action to tackle*climate
change*completely fails, the report warns, deadly heatwaves reaching
temperatures of 48C could become the new normal across the UK....May
abolished the Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC) just days
after she was appointed as the new Prime Minister, raising fears over
her attitude to the looming global climate emergency....The *decision
was widely condemned by MPs, campaigners and scientists, with some
branding it "plain stupid*", "terrible" and "deeply worrying"....five
ways that climate change could cripple Britain:
*Heatwaves* Searing heatwaves, .. above the 40C mark, will be
commonplace by the 2040s.
*Floods* as global warning increases, rainfall will intensify across
the UK, putting more homes at risk of flooding.
*Food *... about 40% of goods coming from abroad.
*Environment* - farmland...useless as water becomes more scarce and soil
is degraded. Only 9% of prime farmland will remain by 2050,
*Water shortages* .. heatwaves will mean water shortages ...more
frequent by the 2050s.
